Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe safest way to buy a used Nintendo cartridge is to combine a realistic price check, sharp photographs of the actual item, code and shell comparisons, and a written return route. Nintendo’s advice is direct: “Use caution when purchasing used games.” No single seal, boot test, label detail or seller promise proves authenticity by itself.
Start with the seller, not the cartridge
Counterfeit games are easiest to avoid before payment. Choose a transaction in which the seller can prove what is being sold and you can reverse the purchase if the item is not genuine.

Prefer a documented transaction
- Use a seller with a credible history of completed transactions and feedback that discusses the actual games, not just shipping speed.
- Confirm the marketplace or retailer has a written return process and a buyer-dispute route. Save a copy of those terms before paying.
- Pay through a method that preserves a dispute option. A private transfer with no practical recovery path leaves you dependent on the seller’s goodwill.
- Ask whether the pictured cartridge is the exact one you will receive. Stock images and “100% authentic” text are not evidence.
Compare the asking price with completed sales
Nintendo warns that products offered far below normal retail prices may be counterfeit or part of a scam. Check several completed sales for the same title, region and condition rather than relying on one active listing. A low price can have a legitimate explanation, such as a damaged label or missing case, but the seller should be able to explain it. If the explanation is vague, treat the discount as a risk signal rather than a bargain.
Consider completeness and condition separately
A loose cartridge, a boxed copy and a complete package with manual are different products. Make sure the listing states which one is offered. Packaging and manuals can also be reproduced, so “complete” does not establish that the cartridge is original.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Demand photographs that can answer specific questions
Ask for high-resolution photographs of the actual cartridge, not a manufacturer image or a picture copied from another listing. You need enough detail to read small printing and inspect edges without guessing.
Minimum photo set
- Front label, straight-on, in focus and evenly lit.
- Back label or rear shell, including every product code and regulatory marking.
- Top, bottom and side edges to reveal shell color, seams and damage.
- Contacts and screw area when their condition is relevant.
- Packaging, manual and inserts if the listing includes them.
- For an expensive or suspicious purchase, an internal board photo if the seller permits opening the shell.
Blurry, heavily filtered or oversaturated images hide exactly the details that distinguish a reproduction. Request a new photograph with a handwritten date or the listing number beside the cartridge if you need to establish that the seller actually possesses the item.
What to read in the images
Look at the label’s alignment, font weight, color transitions, Nintendo and license logos, rating symbol, region notation and product number. Misspellings, soft edges around letters, incorrect spacing or artwork that is noticeably darker or brighter than a known genuine copy justify more questions. Counterfeiters may ship a cartridge separately from packaging or instruction manuals, so inspect the physical relationship between the claimed contents and the item pictured.

Nintendo describes the Official Nintendo Licensed Product Seal as an indication that a product was evaluated and licensed by Nintendo. Older products may show the Original Nintendo Seal of Quality or the Original Nintendo Licensee Seal of Quality. A seal that is missing, poorly printed or inconsistent with the game’s release is a reason to pause.

Counterfeit labels can reproduce seal artwork, so a convincing emblem cannot authenticate a cartridge on its own. Confirm that the region and language shown on the cartridge match the listing and the version you intend to play. A genuine cartridge from a different region may be legitimate, but its label, code and software behavior should make that origin clear.
Compare with a verified genuine copy
The most reliable visual method is side-by-side comparison with a cartridge you obtained from a trusted source or with detailed reference photographs of a proven genuine example. Compare like with like: the same title, platform, region and revision where possible.
| Feature | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Label layout | Margins, logo placement, font, artwork crop and color | Reproduction labels often shift or resize elements. |
| Product code | Characters, punctuation and position on front and back | A wrong or inconsistent code can identify the wrong release. |
| Shell | Color, translucency, molding lines, texture and seam fit | Replacement shells may combine regional or title conventions. |
| Markings | Nintendo, patent, rating and license marks | Weak, dull or misspelled marks are difficult to explain on a genuine copy. |
| Hardware | Screws, board layout, chips, battery and manufacturing marks | Internal construction is harder to reproduce accurately, although inspection has risks. |
Take photographs of both items under the same lighting. Small differences become easier to see when the images are aligned, but remember that legitimate regional and production variants exist. A difference is a prompt to verify, not an automatic counterfeit verdict.

Nintendo DS: check the NTR code and software identity
DS cartridges usually carry an NTR code followed by a product number and region. The product number on the rear should correspond to the number on the front. A mismatch is a strong warning because the label and shell may have been assembled from unrelated parts.

Inspect the physical cartridge
- Check for blurry copied artwork, incorrect colors and labels that are not square or properly centered.
- Inspect the Nintendo and patent markings for weak, dull or poorly formed printing.
- Compare the shell profile and color with a verified copy of the same title and region.
Use special Pokémon shells only as corroboration
Some Pokémon HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black, Black 2, White and White 2 cartridges used dark shells that can appear translucent purple when held to light. This can support an authenticity assessment, but it is not a stand-alone test: regional and title variants exist, and a counterfeit shell can imitate the effect.
Check what the console recognizes
Insert the cartridge and verify that the title shown on the system menu matches the label. Unexpected software appearing on the menu is a major warning sign. A correct title screen does not eliminate every possibility of a reproduction, so retain the physical checks and your return option.
Game Boy Advance: label stamps and optional board inspection
An authentic GBA label normally includes the game logo, Nintendo logo, seal, rating symbol and product number. Genuine labels documented by Nintendo Life often have stamped characters. Convincing reproductions may lack those characters or show a different print sheen and background placement.
Inspect without opening first
- Read every character in the product number and compare its location with a known genuine copy.
- Look for the expected stamped impression rather than a flat, digitally printed substitute.
- Compare the label’s gloss, texture and background alignment; a correct picture with the wrong sheen remains suspicious.
Open the shell only when the purchase justifies the risk
For a high-value cartridge, ask whether the seller will provide an internal photograph or allow inspection under agreed return terms. A small Tri-Wing screwdriver is commonly used for GBA cartridge screws. Opening the shell can damage it, strip the screw or reduce resale value, so do not make it a routine first step.

Inside, compare the board with photographs of a proven genuine board. Look for the correct board layout, markings and battery type. Incorrect batteries, unfamiliar markings or an arrangement that belongs to another title are significant concerns, but an unfamiliar revision should be verified before declaring it fake.
Game Boy and Game Boy Color: apply the same layered check
For Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges, compare the label, Nintendo branding, region notation, shell molding and product code with a genuine example. Reproduction carts can mix a shell style from one region with a label convention from another or omit expected Nintendo branding.
A missing logo, an unusual shell color or a label that uses the wrong regional design is sufficient reason to request clearer evidence. If the seller cannot provide it, use the return terms—or do not buy.

SNES
Authentic SNES cartridges use metal security screws. Their boards should carry Nintendo and year markings plus a serial code. A plastic screw, absent Nintendo markings or an unexplained board mismatch warrants internal photographs or withdrawal from the transaction.

NES and N64
For expensive or suspicious NES and N64 items, internal board inspection and comparison with documented genuine boards may be necessary. Request clear photos before paying. Do not assume that a cartridge which boots once is genuine: replacement boards and altered shells can still run software.

- Identify the exact version. Record the platform, title, region, language, cartridge-only or complete status, and any known revision.
- Establish a price range. Review several completed sales of comparable condition. Note whether unusually cheap examples have damaged labels, missing parts or other legitimate explanations.
- Screen the seller. Read transaction history, confirm a written return process and check that payment includes a dispute route.
- Request actual-item photos. Obtain front, back, edges and included packaging. Ask for close-ups of codes, seals and markings.
- Compare references. Put the photos beside a verified cartridge or reliable high-resolution references. Check label, code, shell and regional conventions together.
- Ask targeted questions. For DS, ask about matching front and rear NTR product numbers. For GBA or high-value systems, ask whether board photos or an inspection are possible.
- Save evidence. Keep the listing, photographs, messages, seller terms and payment record until the return period ends.
- Pay only when the evidence is coherent. A seller who answers clearly and offers a practical return path is safer than one who merely repeats an authenticity claim.
Inspect the cartridge immediately after delivery
Do not wait until the marketplace deadline. Photograph the package as received, then document the cartridge from every side before altering it.
- Confirm that the delivered item is the one pictured, including label, shell and product code.
- Check the front and back against the saved listing photographs and your reference copy.
- Insert it into the correct console and verify that the menu identifies the expected title and region behavior.
- Test loading and saving without treating a successful boot as conclusive proof.
- Look for a poorly reassembled shell, damaged screw heads, loose parts or contacts inconsistent with the listing.
- If the purchase price warrants it and the seller’s terms allow it, arrange an internal inspection or request board evidence rather than opening it impulsively.
Signals that justify walking away
- The price is far below comparable completed sales and the seller cannot give a credible reason.
- The seller refuses to show the actual cartridge, back label or board when the item’s value warrants those views.
- Photos are blurry, oversaturated, incorrectly aligned or visibly reproduced.
- Labels contain misspellings, wrong region codes or front-and-back product-code mismatches.
- A supposedly complete package arrives loose, or its manuals and packaging look freshly reproduced.
- The console identifies a different title, or the cartridge has save, loading or compatibility problems.
- The shell appears opened or poorly reassembled without disclosure.
- No practical return or dispute route exists.
Walking away is usually cheaper than trying to authenticate an item after the seller has your money. Do not let a rare title, an urgent auction deadline or a claimed “one-time deal” replace evidence.
What to do if the cartridge is counterfeit
Preserve evidence before contacting anyone. Photograph the cartridge, labels, shell, packaging, listing, seller messages and payment record. Keep screenshots showing the promised condition and any authenticity statement.
- Contact the seller through the platform’s messaging system and request a refund under the stated return process.
- Describe the issue accurately as counterfeit or materially not as described, and attach the clearest evidence.
- If the seller does not resolve it, open the platform’s buyer dispute before its deadline. Follow the required shipping and tracking instructions.
- Do not modify, repair or resell the cartridge as genuine while the dispute is open.
- After resolving the transaction, report suspected counterfeit activity through Nintendo Support’s infringement-reporting contact and the marketplace’s reporting channel.
Keep the item only as long as the dispute or authorities require. Passing it to another buyer as authentic transfers the loss and perpetuates the counterfeit market.
How to choose between listings
When two prices look similar, choose the listing with stronger evidence rather than the one with the most attractive description.
| Decision factor | Safer indication | Higher-risk indication |
|---|---|---|
| Seller history | Consistent completed-game feedback and clear answers | Little history, evasive replies or copied descriptions |
| Photos | Sharp photographs of the exact front, back and edges | Stock image, one angle or unreadable printing |
| Price | Within the range of comparable completed sales | Far below market without a documented reason |
| Returns | Written return process and payment dispute protection | “No returns” with no platform remedy |
| Completeness | Cartridge, case and manuals clearly itemized | Vague “complete” claim or reproduced-looking inserts |
| Region and language | Code, label and listing agree | Mixed regional conventions or unexplained mismatch |
| Authenticity evidence | Code, shell and print comparisons; board access for costly items | Seal or “authentic” statement offered as the only proof |
There is no authoritative counterfeit-rate percentage that can tell you the odds for a particular listing. Make the decision from the evidence available for that cartridge and preserve a way to return it.
