There is no single visual test that proves a Nintendo DS game is genuine. Before paying, check the listing and seller, compare the cartridge’s front and rear codes, inspect the label against a reliable reference for the same game and region, and confirm what is included. Treat each clue as evidence—not a guarantee—and ask for clearer photos or walk away if important details do not add up.
Start with the listing and seller
- Confirm the exact game, region, language and included items. Nintendo advises buyers to check that a product’s region and language match their needs.
- Look for photographs of the specific cartridge, not just stock images. You need clear views of both the front label and the back markings; ask the seller for them if either side is missing.
- Check seller feedback, return terms and the marketplace’s buyer-protection options. These help you assess the transaction, but do not authenticate the cartridge.
- Be more cautious when a price is well below the usual level for the same game or a seller offers many Nintendo products at unusually low prices. Nintendo identifies these as warning signs, not proof of counterfeiting.
Nintendo’s guidance is direct: “Use caution when purchasing used games.” Nintendo Support recommends considering the product’s print and packaging, seller and price context, seals, and region or language rather than relying on one clue.
Compare the cartridge’s front and back
Check the front label code
A DS cartridge label code described in Nintendo Life’s DS-specific guide begins with “NTR,” followed by a four-character product number and a region designation. Compare the code with a trustworthy reference for the exact title and region. A code that does not fit is a warning sign, but a matching code alone does not authenticate the game: counterfeiters can copy identifiers.
Match the rear marking
Compare the product number on the back of the cartridge with the number on the front label. A disagreement is a strong reason to pause. The rear marking is light and can wear with handling, so a faint or missing mark by itself is not conclusive evidence that the cartridge is fake.

Look closely at the label and shell
Check print sharpness, alignment, artwork and the appearance of Nintendo or patent markings. Blurry art or markings that look notably different from a reliable reference for the same title and region deserve caution. A counterfeit can still have a convincing-looking label, so use these observations alongside the codes and listing details.
Nintendo also advises examining seals and packaging when evaluating a purchase. On a used game, however, missing or altered packaging should be considered separately from the cartridge: it does not establish that the game card itself is counterfeit.

Use title-specific clues narrowly
Nintendo Life notes that certain Pokémon DS games use special black shells that appear purple when held to light. Treat this as a cross-check for the specific games covered by the guide—not as a rule for every dark cartridge, or as a stand-alone test of authenticity.
Assess the box and manual separately
Ask whether the case and manual are included and, if completeness matters, request clear photographs of them. Packaging and manuals can be missing or reproduced, just as a cartridge may be sold on its own. Judge the condition and originality of those items independently; their presence does not prove the cartridge is genuine, and their absence does not prove it is fake.

Check region and language before buying
Confirm that the version is the one you want, rather than assuming that every DS cartridge has the same language or regional details. Nintendo specifically recommends checking region and language. A different-region copy may not meet your language or compatibility expectations even if the cartridge is genuine.
If a DS game card shows an error on a DSi
Nintendo’s troubleshooting advice applies to a particular error message when playing a DS game card on a DSi; it is not a general authentication test. For that specific error, Nintendo suggests trying the card in an original Nintendo DS or DS Lite. If it still fails there, Nintendo says it may be defective; if it works in those systems, Nintendo says it is likely counterfeit. See Nintendo’s DSi error guidance. A game booting on another system should not be treated as proof of authenticity in other situations.

Make the buy, ask or pass decision
- Buy with reasonable confidence: the seller provides clear photos of the specific cartridge, front and rear product numbers agree, printing looks consistent with a reliable reference, and the region and included items suit you. These combined clues still cannot guarantee authenticity.
- Ask for more evidence: the back is not shown, a marking is too faint to read, the region is unclear, or the listing uses stock photos. Request specific front-and-back pictures and clarification before paying.
- Walk away: codes conflict, the seller will not provide basic photos, the listing’s details contradict the cartridge, or the price and seller context raise concerns the seller cannot resolve. You do not need to prove a cartridge is fake to decide the risk is not worth taking.
There is no verified prevalence figure here that can tell you how likely any individual listing is to be counterfeit. Make the decision from the evidence in that listing, and do not let one reassuring detail—such as a matching code, polished label or successful boot—outweigh unresolved problems elsewhere.
