Estimate WordPress bandwidth by multiplying your monthly visits by the average requests each visit makes and the average compressed bytes transferred per request, then add downloads and traffic headroom. In compact form: monthly bandwidth ≈ monthly visits × average requests per visit × average transferred page size + monthly downloads × average download size. Treat that result as a minimum, not a plan target. WPMU DEV recommends maintaining at least twice the minimum because traffic surges can grow exponentially.

What WordPress bandwidth measures
Bandwidth is the amount of data your hosting infrastructure delivers during a billing period. It is a volume, usually shown in GB or TB per month. It is different from storage, which is the amount of data kept on the server, and from throughput, which is the transfer rate at a particular moment.

A page view rarely transfers only an HTML document. A browser can request the HTML, stylesheets, JavaScript, images, fonts, video, API responses and other assets. Kinsta’s documentation notes that an 80 KB HTML file may consume about 40 KB after compression. Your calculation should therefore use the bytes actually transferred after normal compression and delivery, not the uncompressed file size shown in an editor.
The accounting boundary matters. Some hosts count only traffic served by the origin server; others include CDN delivery, or report CDN usage as a separate allowance. A control-panel figure can also include services that do not appear as page views.

The bandwidth formula
Use this formula when you have monthly figures:
monthly bandwidth ≈ (monthly visits × average requests per visit × average transferred page size) + (monthly downloads × average download size)
If your analytics reports daily visits instead, calculate monthly visits first:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →monthly visits = average daily visits × days in the billing month
Then apply a safety factor. With the recommendation from WPMU DEV, a practical planning target is:
planned capacity = calculated minimum × 2
You may choose a larger margin when a campaign, product launch, livestream, large software download or seasonal event could create an unusually sharp peak.
What each input means
| Input | Definition | How to obtain it |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly visits | The number of visits or sessions in the billing month. Use the same definition consistently. | Export the monthly figure from your analytics platform, or multiply a reliable daily average by the number of days in the month. |
| Requests per visit | The average number of page or resource requests generated by one visit. A request may fetch HTML, an image, a script, an API response or another asset. | Use server logs or a host report when possible. If you only have page views, document that limitation rather than treating a page view as a complete transfer. |
| Average transferred page size | Bytes delivered for the typical visit after compression, caching and normal asset loading. | Prefer measured transferred bytes from logs or host analytics. Do not substitute the uncompressed size of your HTML file. |
| Monthly downloads | Files intentionally downloaded by visitors, such as PDFs, installers, archives, audio or video files. | Use download counters, access logs or a media/CDN report. |
| Average download size | The average bytes in each counted download. | Calculate from the files actually served; include variants when visitors can choose different resolutions or formats. |
How to calculate your site’s minimum
- Choose the billing period. Most hosting allowances are monthly, so use a calendar month or the host’s defined 30-day period. Do not mix a daily analytics average with a 31-day allowance without converting it.
- Measure visits. Record the average daily visits and multiply by the number of days in the billing period, or use the monthly total directly. Keep bot traffic separate if your analytics excludes it.
- Measure requests per visit. A request count from server logs is more useful than a simple page-view count because it includes supporting assets. If the host reports requests differently, write down its definition.
- Measure transferred bytes. Use compressed response sizes at the point where the host counts traffic. Include HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, video, fonts and API responses that are delivered on a normal visit.
- Calculate page-load traffic. Multiply monthly visits, requests per visit and average transferred size. Keep units consistent: convert KB or MB to bytes, or keep the entire calculation in MB.
- Add downloads separately. Multiply the number of downloads by the average file size. A large PDF or video can dominate the result even when ordinary pages are small.
- Apply headroom. Multiply the minimum by at least two when following WPMU DEV’s guidance. Increase the factor if your traffic is volatile or the cost of throttling is high.
- Compare the result with the plan’s accounting rules. Check whether the allowance is for origin bandwidth, CDN bandwidth, visits, or a combination, and check what happens at the limit.

Suppose a site records 30,000 monthly visits, 2.5 requests per visit and an average transferred page size of 1.2 MB. The page-load component is:

30,000 × 2.5 × 1.2 MB = 90,000 MB
That is approximately 90 GB using decimal units, before downloads, bot traffic and surge headroom. This is an arithmetic illustration, not an industry benchmark. If visitors download 4,000 files averaging 8 MB, add:
4,000 × 8 MB = 32,000 MB (32 GB)
The measured minimum becomes about 122 GB. A two-times planning target would be about 244 GB for that billing period. If your host uses binary units, confirm whether its dashboard labels 1,024 MB as a GB; providers do not always display units identically.
Converting a daily estimate
If the site averages 1,000 visits per day, a 30-day billing period contains about 30,000 visits. For a 31-day period, the same daily average produces 31,000 visits. Recalculate for the actual allowance period instead of assuming every month has 30 days.
Throughput is a separate question
WordPress.org’s Codex illustrates the distinction with 100,000 hits in one day at 160 KB of transferred data per hit. That works out to roughly 190 KB per second, or 1.5 Mb/s, sustained over the day. Monthly volume tells you how much transfer the plan must permit; peak throughput tells you whether the server and network can deliver a burst quickly enough.
What should be counted
Page and application assets
- HTML documents and redirects.
- Stylesheets, JavaScript bundles and web fonts.
- Images, responsive image variants and thumbnails.
- Embedded or self-hosted video and audio.
- REST, GraphQL or other API responses requested by the page.
- Files delivered through forms, membership areas or ecommerce workflows.
Do not count only the HTML document if the host charges for every response byte. Conversely, do not add the same cached asset twice if your provider’s report already measures the delivered transfer once.
Downloads and background traffic
WPMU DEV’s method explicitly adds downloads. Include every file that visitors can fetch directly, and account for repeated downloads when a browser, download manager or failed connection requests a file again.

Automated traffic can materially change the total. Analytics platforms commonly filter some bots, while server logs record requests that never become human sessions. Compare the host’s byte total with analytics rather than assuming they should match.
CDN and cache boundaries
Kinsta documents a distinction between server bandwidth and CDN bandwidth: responses delivered from a CDN or edge cache may be excluded from server bandwidth while consuming a separate CDN allowance. Ask the host exactly which bytes are counted in each bucket. A site can appear comfortably below its origin limit while approaching its CDN limit, or the reverse.
Non-HTTP services
cPanel states that bandwidth reporting can include HTTP, FTP, SMTP and POP3/IMAP transfers. Consequently, a cPanel total may exceed an estimate based solely on page views. Large mailbox transfers, backups moved over FTP or outbound email attachments can consume allowance even though they are absent from web analytics.
How to compare hosting plans
After calculating the minimum and adding headroom, compare plans by the rules that determine how your usage is counted, not by a headline “unlimited” label.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Allowance type | Is the limit monthly server bandwidth, monthly visits, CDN bandwidth, or a hybrid? | A visit allowance can restrict a site even when its pages are small; a byte allowance can penalize media-heavy pages. |
| CDN treatment | Are edge-cache responses excluded from origin usage? Is CDN transfer a separate quota? | You need enough capacity in both buckets when they are measured separately. |
| Overage behavior | Does the provider send alerts, charge overages, throttle delivery, suspend service or require an upgrade? | The same nominal allowance has very different risk depending on the consequence of exceeding it. |
| Shared allowance | Do several WordPress installations share one account-level pool? | One busy site can consume capacity needed by the others. |
| Storage and downloads | Are your files permitted, and are storage, egress and download limits separate? | A plan can have ample page bandwidth but insufficient storage or file-transfer capacity. |
| Headroom | Does the allowance exceed your calculated minimum by at least the margin you selected? | Capacity for an average month is not capacity for a campaign or viral post. |
Visit-based versus bandwidth-based plans
Kinsta documents plans that use visits or server bandwidth, with separate considerations for CDN bandwidth and storage. If a plan is visit-based, clarify what qualifies as a visit and whether cached requests, bots or repeat sessions are treated differently. If it is bandwidth-based, obtain the exact byte boundary and whether compression is measured before or after transfer.
WPMU DEV publishes provider-specific capacities ranging from 5 TB through 350 TB and describes its plans as having unlimited visitor numbers. Those figures describe that provider’s offerings; they are not a requirement for WordPress sites generally. Match a plan to your measured traffic and the provider’s definitions rather than using a published capacity as a universal benchmark.

Is “unlimited bandwidth” really unlimited?
Usually, “unlimited” means there is no fixed monthly byte number in the marketing description, not that delivery is free of every condition. The service can still have fair-use provisions, CPU or memory limits, concurrent-connection limits, storage caps, traffic-shaping rules, suspension policies or an acceptable-use clause. It may also impose a separate CDN, backup or email quota.
Before relying on an unlimited claim, ask for the written answers to these questions:
- Which protocols and services are included in the unlimited statement?
- Are CDN responses, origin responses and downloads treated the same way?
- What happens during a sustained spike or unusually large file transfer?
- Are there speed, CPU, PHP-worker or connection limits that effectively cap delivery?
- Will the provider alert you, throttle traffic, charge an overage or suspend the account?
Even when the byte allowance is uncapped, keep your own estimate. It reveals whether a sudden increase is caused by real visitors, a bot, a misconfigured cache or a file being requested repeatedly.
Planning for spikes
The formula estimates an average. A promotion, news mention, viral post, video release, game launch or seasonal event can concentrate a month’s traffic into hours. WPMU DEV states: “We recommend maintaining at least twice the minimum required bandwidth because surges in traffic tend to be exponential.” Use that two-times figure as a baseline for ordinary uncertainty, then model a separate event scenario when you know the likely audience.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Compare logs with analytics
Analytics counts sessions or page views; logs count requests and bytes. Differences are expected when bots are filtered, visitors reject scripts, pages are cached, downloads occur outside tracked pages or CDN responses bypass the origin. Compare:
- Compressed response size versus source-file size.
- Origin bytes versus CDN bytes.
- Human sessions versus bot and crawler requests.
- Tracked downloads versus every file response in access logs.
- HTTP totals versus FTP, SMTP and POP3/IMAP transfers.
Investigate a sudden divergence rather than changing the formula blindly. A new image format, an uncompressed backup, a cache miss or a looping API request can increase bytes without a corresponding increase in visits.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Set alerts before the limit
Configure notifications at a percentage of the allowance, such as 70%, 85% and 100%, if the provider supports them. Review the trend weekly during a campaign and monthly during normal operation. Kinsta documents alerts and overage handling for plans with usage limits; your host may use different thresholds or consequences, so verify the exact policy.
Reducing bandwidth without breaking the site
- Compress responses. Verify that text assets and HTML are delivered compressed, and measure the transferred result rather than assuming compression is enabled.
- Resize images. Serve dimensions appropriate to the display and use responsive variants so a phone does not download a desktop-sized image.
- Cache stable assets. Long-lived browser and edge-cache headers reduce repeat transfers, provided you have a reliable cache-invalidation process.
- Audit plugins and themes. Remove unused scripts, duplicate libraries and requests that load on every page.
- Stream or offload large media. Large video and software files can dominate egress; use a delivery service whose allowance and pricing you understand.
- Control bots. Rate-limit abusive crawlers and investigate repeated requests, while avoiding rules that block legitimate search or accessibility tools.
- Prevent accidental downloads. Check hotlinking, open directories, backup files and logs for a single asset being fetched unusually often.
Recalculate after each major optimization. Lower page bytes may reduce origin bandwidth but shift usage to a CDN bucket, so inspect both reports.
Practical decision examples
Text-focused publication
Use measured monthly visits, requests per visit and compressed page bytes. Add document downloads separately if readers obtain PDFs. A plan with a modest byte allowance may be adequate when the CDN handles static assets, but only if the CDN quota also covers the calculated transfer.
Image-heavy portfolio
Do not estimate from HTML size. Count the responsive image files actually delivered at each viewport and include image galleries that load after the first page view. A visit-based plan may look generous while a byte-based CDN allowance is the binding limit.
Video or software distribution
Calculate downloads independently and model repeat downloads. For example, 10,000 downloads of a 500 MB file equal 5,000,000 MB, or about 5,000 GB, before any page traffic. Confirm that the host permits this transfer and determine whether the download is counted against origin, CDN or a separate egress allowance.
Bandwidth planning checklist
- Have you converted daily visits to the actual billing period?
- Are requests per visit based on measured logs rather than a page-view guess?
- Are transferred sizes compressed and measured at the provider’s accounting boundary?
- Have you added every downloadable file and its average size?
- Did you separate origin, CDN, email and FTP usage where the host does?
- Have you multiplied the minimum by at least two for ordinary surge headroom?
- Did you check what the provider does at 70%, 85%, 100% and beyond the limit?
- Do multiple sites share the same allowance?
- Have you modeled a campaign or seasonal peak separately from the monthly average?
- Will you compare the estimate with host reports and server logs after the first billing cycle?
Bottom-line method
Start with measured bytes, not a generic WordPress quota. Multiply monthly visits by requests per visit and average transferred page size, add downloads, then reserve at least twice that minimum for normal surges. Finally, map the result to the provider’s definitions for origin traffic, CDN traffic, visits, protocols and overages. That process tells you whether a plan actually fits your site and which limit will be reached first.
