Request cancellation from the store or retailer that took your preorder payment: PlayStation Store orders go to PlayStation Support, and Xbox, Steam, Battle.net, and physical-store orders go to their respective sellers. There is no single cancellation rule for every platform or country. For PlayStation Store digital preorders, the U.S. support guidance makes download status and the timing of your request central to refund eligibility.
First, identify who sold you the preorder
Check your receipt, order confirmation, or purchase history. The seller—not necessarily the game publisher—is the right place to request a cancellation. Activision’s preorder guide lists digital storefronts, and its editions page confirms physical editions for PS5 and Xbox Series X through select retailers. The official guide lists October 23, 2026, as the launch date. Activision’s preorder guide and editions page.
- PlayStation Store: Contact PlayStation Support and check the U.S. preorder terms below if your account is in the United States.
- Xbox, Steam, or Battle.net: Use the relevant storefront’s current support and refund process. The available guidance here does not establish a single current rule for these platforms across all regions.
- Physical copy: Contact the retailer named on your receipt. Its cancellation cutoff may depend on the order’s processing or shipping status.
PlayStation Store: U.S. digital preorder rules
PlayStation’s U.S. support guidance says you can request a refund for a paid digital preorder before release, or within 14 days of purchase, provided the main content has not started downloading or streaming. The timing depends on how far ahead of release you placed the order:
- Preordered more than 14 days before release: You can request a refund up to release, as long as the main content has not started downloading or streaming.
- Preordered 14 days or less before release: The request window is up to 14 days after the preorder purchase, subject to the same no-download-or-streaming condition.
To cancel, contact PlayStation Support. These are terms on PlayStation’s U.S. support page, not a universal rule or a statement of the laws in every country.

Check for automatic downloads
PlayStation warns that an automatic download can begin if the console is set up for it. Check the game’s download status and your console’s automatic-download settings before submitting the request; a download or streaming start may affect eligibility under the stated terms.
Consider preorder bonuses and refund method
If preorder bonuses were made available before release, cancelling may remove access to them. PlayStation says refunds go to the original payment method where possible; certain payment methods are refunded to the PlayStation wallet. PlayStation’s U.S. support guidance has the applicable details.

Xbox, Steam, Battle.net, and physical orders
Submit your request through the seller’s own current cancellation or refund process. The available official sources do not establish matching, current eligibility terms for Xbox, Steam, and Battle.net in every region, so do not assume PlayStation’s timing or download rules apply to them. Activision customer support is not a substitute for the storefront or retailer unless that company actually took your order.
For a boxed copy, use the retailer on the receipt and check the order status for any cancellation cutoff. Activision confirms that physical editions are sold through select retailers, but does not set those retailers’ refund terms on its editions page: Modern Warfare 4 editions.

- Find the order record. Confirm the seller, order number, platform, and whether the purchase is digital or physical.
- Check its status. For PlayStation, look for a download or streaming start; for a physical order, check whether the retailer has begun processing or shipping it.
- Open a cancellation or refund request with that seller. Follow its current regional support instructions and provide the order details it requests.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the cancellation reference and monitor the refund status until the seller confirms the outcome or the payment appears.
Refund timing and payment handling outside the stated PlayStation U.S. guidance depend on the seller; no single processing time applies to all platforms and retailers.
