To save a recent moment, press and hold the Capture Button on the left Joy-Con or a compatible controller. On supported games, the Switch saves up to 30 seconds of gameplay from immediately before you pressed it. The built-in feature is for short clips, not continuous recording; use a capture card with a dockable Switch if you need full matches or livestreams.

Which Switch models and games support video capture?

Nintendo documents gameplay capture for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, and Nintendo Switch Lite when the console is running system menu version 4.0.0 or later. Keep the system software current, but note that an update does not make every game or scene recordable: capture works with most software, and a game can disable it in particular areas. Nintendo’s capture troubleshooting guide explains the software and version requirements.

Switch Lite supports the built-in clip feature, but it does not provide the normal docked HDMI output used by a capture card. A capture-card setup below applies to dockable Switch consoles, not Switch Lite. Switch 2 is different hardware and is not covered by these instructions.

Record a clip with the Capture Button

The Capture Button is the small square button on the left Joy-Con, below the directional buttons. A quick press takes a screenshot; press and hold it to save video. The right-side equivalent is not the Capture Button.

  1. Open a game that supports video capture.
  2. Play until the moment you want to keep has happened.
  3. Press and hold the Capture Button, then release it after the console saves the clip.
  4. Open the HOME Menu and select Album to find the video.

The clip contains up to 30 seconds immediately before the button press, rather than footage recorded from that point forward. A clip may be shorter when the game or scene does not provide the full buffer. If a message says videos cannot be captured for the software, that title or scene has restricted recording. Nintendo’s capture and editing instructions cover the button and Album workflow.

Trim a clip or save a frame as a screenshot

Trim the beginning or end

  1. From the HOME Menu, open Album. Select All Screenshots and Videos if that option appears, then choose the video.
  2. Select Editing and Posting, then Trim.
  3. Move the left marker to set the start point and select Next.
  4. Move the right marker to set the end point, then select Save.

The Switch saves the trimmed version as a new video; it does not overwrite the original.

Choose how to move or share your clips

Method Best for What to know
Wireless transfer Sending a clip to a phone or tablet Up to 10 screenshots and one video per transfer; some software blocks transfers.
USB transfer Copying files to a Windows computer Requires a data-capable cable connected directly to the console and an MTP-compatible computer.
microSD card Moving many files or using a Mac/non-Windows setup Requires removing the card and using a compatible reader.
Direct social posting Quickly posting from Album Requires a Switch user account and a supported game and service.

Send a clip to a phone or tablet

  1. In Album, select a video and choose Sharing and Editing, then Send to Smartphone.
  2. Choose Only This One or Send a Batch.
  3. Scan the QR code with the phone or tablet camera and follow the transfer screen or browser prompts to connect and save the file.

Nintendo allows up to 10 screenshots and one video capture at a time. If the scan fails, try scanning again and make sure the device can connect to the temporary wireless connection. The process is handy for a few clips; for larger collections, USB or microSD may be more convenient. See Nintendo’s wireless transfer instructions.

Copy clips to a Windows computer by USB

  1. On the Switch, open System Settings → Data Management → Manage Screenshots and Videos.
  2. Select Copy to a Computer via USB Connection.
  3. Connect the console directly to the computer with a data-capable USB cable, then select the files to copy.

Do not connect through the dock: its USB ports do not support this copy feature. Nintendo’s workflow is intended for Windows and uses Media Transfer Protocol (MTP). It does not work natively with operating systems that lack MTP, including iOS. Some third-party MTP software may help on other computers, but Nintendo does not guarantee it; a microSD card is an alternative. Follow Nintendo’s computer transfer instructions.

Use a microSD card for a larger transfer

  1. Power off the Switch before removing the microSD card.
  2. Remove the card and insert it into a computer using a compatible card reader.
  3. Copy the screenshots and videos from the Nintendo media folders to the computer.
  4. Safely eject the card before putting it back in the console.

Folder names and card-reader support can vary by computer and card setup. If you are unsure which files to copy, use Nintendo’s documented USB workflow where available rather than changing or deleting folders on the card.

Record longer gameplay with a capture card

For full matches, longer play sessions, commentary, overlays, or livestreaming, use an HDMI capture card and recording software. The regular Switch and OLED model send video from the dock; Switch Lite cannot use this standard HDMI setup.

Switch dock HDMI OUT → capture card HDMI IN
Capture card HDMI OUT → TV or monitor
Capture card USB → computer
  1. Place the Switch in its dock.
  2. Connect the dock’s HDMI OUT to the capture card’s HDMI IN.
  3. Connect the card’s HDMI OUT to a TV or monitor, then connect the card to the computer over USB.
  4. Open OBS Studio, Elgato software, or another compatible recording application after connecting the hardware.
  5. Add the card as a Video Capture Device or equivalent source, then confirm the picture and game audio.
  6. Start recording or streaming. Play using the TV or monitor connected through HDMI passthrough if the software preview feels delayed.

The wiring and software workflow is illustrated in Elgato’s Switch setup guide. Recording duration depends on the capture hardware, computer, storage, and software. Before buying a card, check that its recording resolution, passthrough, latency, USB requirement, operating-system support, audio options, and software compatibility suit your setup. OBS is a flexible option for recording, scenes, overlays, and streaming; its official download page is obsproject.com/download.

A capture card is unnecessary if you only want occasional built-in highlights. If you want to compare hardware, check manufacturers’ current specifications: Elgato Game Capture Neo lists up to 1080p60 recording and 4K60 HDR passthrough, while Elgato Game Capture 4K X is aimed at more demanding setups. Features and prices can change; the capture resolution you need for original Switch footage is usually a more useful starting point than buying for a newer console you do not own.

Troubleshoot capture and transfer problems

Problem Likely cause What to try
No video appears The button was tapped rather than held, the game blocks video, or the scene has a restriction. Hold the Capture Button; update the system and game; test in another supported title. If only one title or scene blocks capture, it is likely a software restriction.
A screenshot works but video does not The game may allow screenshots but not video, or the button press was too brief. Use a long press and test a different supported game or scene.
USB transfer does nothing Charge-only cable, connection through the dock, unsupported MTP environment, or the transfer menu was not opened first. Open the copy menu first; connect a data cable directly to the console; use a Windows/MTP computer or try microSD.
Phone cannot complete transfer QR scan or temporary wireless connection failed. Scan again and follow the phone’s connection prompt; use USB or microSD for multiple files.
Capture card has a black screen or no signal Incorrect HDMI direction, disconnected USB, wrong source, or a problematic adapter/switch. Verify dock HDMI OUT → card HDMI IN and card HDMI OUT → display; reconnect USB, reopen recording software, select the correct source, then try another cable or port. Remove unnecessary HDMI switches or splitters and restart the dock, card, computer, and software.
Gameplay feels delayed You are playing from the recording-software preview. Play from the display connected to the capture card’s HDMI OUT passthrough.

For Elgato Game Capture Neo, the manufacturer recommends a USB 3.0 connection; other cards may have different requirements, so check the guide for the specific model.
