It is most promising with legally obtained, already-installed 32-bit Windows games. Winlator is not a full Windows 95/98 virtual machine, and changing its Windows-version setting cannot make every old game work.
What Winlator does—and what it does not
Winlator is an Android compatibility environment for Windows applications and games. It combines Wine, which translates many Windows calls, with Box86 or Box64, which helps run x86 Windows software on ARM Android hardware. Graphics wrappers and device drivers translate or expose older Windows graphics APIs, while each container provides an isolated environment with its own settings. The project describes its approach on the Winlator website and in the official README.
That is different from booting a complete Windows 95 or Windows 98 installation. Winlator does not include games, and its Wine version selector only changes the Windows version reported to applications; it does not recreate the old operating system’s kernel, hardware drivers, or timing. The game files and any required media must come from a source you are entitled to use.
Which Windows 95/98-era games are the best candidates?
32-bit Windows games
A conventional 32-bit game executable is generally a better starting point than an old installer or a title dependent on unusual hardware. Games using familiar Windows interfaces such as DirectDraw, Direct3D, DirectSound, or WinMM may work, but launching is not the same as being fully playable: menus, gameplay, saving, audio, fullscreen, and long-session stability can each behave differently.

Games with 16-bit installers
A game itself may be 32-bit even though its original setup program is 16-bit. That installer can fail in a modern Wine environment without proving the installed game is incompatible. If you have legitimate access to the files, install the game on a compatible Windows computer and copy the complete installed folder to Android, or use a legitimate updated installer if one exists. Preserve its data files and subfolders; a copied directory can still need registry entries, codecs, configuration, or disc access created by the installer.
DOS games from the same era
Some games sold during the Windows 95/98 period are actually DOS games or include a DOS launch mode. Identify the game’s intended runtime before troubleshooting Winlator: a DOSBox-based Android app may be a better fit for genuine DOS software, while ScummVM is a strong option only for games supported by its adventure-game engines.
Current official version and safe download
As of August 18, 2026, the BrunoDev85 GitHub releases page lists Winlator 11.1 Final as the latest official release; GitHub shows a June 12, 2026 release date. Its release notes describe improvements including gamepad support, changes to the experimental Vortek driver, D7VK in the DDraw Wrapper, and an option to install Steam Legacy from the Start Menu. These changes do not establish compatibility for any particular 1990s game. Check the official releases page for the current APK and notes.

The official README’s installation instructions name Winlator_11.1.apk. Prefer the BrunoDev85 repository or the official Winlator site; avoid APK mirrors, download managers, and suspicious “premium” or modded builds. Different forks can use different drivers, requirements, and menu labels. Back up containers and saves before upgrading, especially if a game already works.
Will your Android phone work?
There is no single universal minimum specification for every Winlator build and game. ARM64 hardware and Vulkan support are important practical considerations for graphics compatibility. Snapdragon phones with Adreno graphics are often a safer starting point because of the Turnip driver path; Mali devices may use Vortek or another path, with different results. Neither GPU family guarantees a particular game will run.
Requirements published for one fork should not be treated as official minimums for another. For example, the WineBox64 fork README lists Android 9 or later, Snapdragon 460 or better, Adreno 610 or better, Vulkan 1.1 or later, and 2 GB of free storage as example requirements for that fork. Those figures are not universal requirements for BrunoDev85’s official build. Allow storage for the environment, game files, saves, and caches. A keyboard and mouse or gamepad may also be essential for games designed around PC controls.

Install Winlator and create a container
- Download the official APK from the BrunoDev85 GitHub releases page.
- Install it on Android. If installation is blocked, grant permission to install unknown apps to the browser or file manager you used; you can turn that permission off afterward.
- Open Winlator and let its initial environment setup finish before trying to create a container.
- Tap the + button to create a container. Start with its default Wine and graphics settings.
- Launch the container once to create its filesystem. Use the file access or mapped-storage locations exposed by your build to make the installer or game folder available.
- After locating the game executable, create a shortcut for it. The official README recommends shortcuts because you can assign settings to individual games rather than changing the whole container.
Exact Android storage permissions and paths can vary by Android version and Winlator fork, so use the locations shown by your installation rather than assuming a path from another build.
Add and launch a legally obtained game
Install from the original files
- Copy the game’s installer files to Android storage you can access from the container.
- Open the installer in Winlator and, if it works, install to a simple path such as
C:GamesGameName. - Create a shortcut to the actual game executable—not just the installer. Set its working directory to the game folder if the game expects to find files relative to itself.
- Test the game with the default settings before changing drivers or other options.
Copy an installed game folder
- Install the game on a compatible Windows PC or another legitimate environment if its old installer will not run.
- Copy the complete installed folder to accessible Android storage, keeping data files, DLLs, configuration files, and subfolders intact.
- If the game expects a CD, provide legally usable disc media or data by a method supported by your setup. Copying only the executable may omit required music, movies, or other files.
- Create a Winlator shortcut to the game executable and test it before applying tweaks.
A copied folder is not guaranteed to be self-contained. Some games depend on registry entries, codecs, system components, a disc check, or installer-created configuration.

Use a per-game shortcut and change one setting at a time so you can identify what helps or breaks a title. A sensible baseline is the default Wine version, default graphics driver, default Box64 preset, and a modest resolution such as 800×600 or 1024×768. Choose Windows 7 or the default compatibility setting first; try XP if the game expects an older Win32 environment, and Windows 98 or 95 only if it checks the reported version or behaves better that way. None of those settings installs authentic Windows 9x.

The official README lists targeted tips rather than a universal profile. Treat them as experiments for matching symptoms:
- Try the Box64 Performance preset for performance problems.
- Install Wine Mono from Start Menu → System Tools → Installers if software needs .NET-related support.
- Try
MESA_EXTENSION_MAX_YEAR=2003if an older game will not open. - Try Force Fullscreen when a low-resolution game displays incorrectly.
- For certain Unity games, the README suggests the Box64 Stability preset or
-force-gfx-direct. - If audio crackles, increasing ALSA/PulseAudio average latency may help. The README gives 90 ms as an example that helped Unreal Gold; it is not a universal setting.
Why graphics, sound, and controls can fail
Graphics
Old games may use DirectDraw palette effects, early Direct3D, fixed resolutions, exclusive fullscreen, old OpenGL paths, or proprietary 3D accelerators. A black screen, distorted colors, a tiny window, flicker during resolution changes, or visible menus with missing 3D gameplay can point to a rendering mismatch. Winlator 11.1’s graphics changes may help some titles, but the release notes do not name specific Windows 95/98 games as confirmed compatible.
Audio and MIDI
Digital sound, MIDI music, CD audio, and old Sound Blaster or AdLib options are separate potential failure points. If effects work but music does not, test MIDI separately rather than assuming the whole audio system is broken. Increase audio latency only when crackling is the symptom, and save after changing settings because an old game may store them in an unexpected location.

Input
Touch controls may be a poor substitute for a mouse in strategy games, adventures, simulations, and interfaces with small targets. Use a Bluetooth or USB keyboard and mouse for those games, or a gamepad where the game supports one. Winlator 11.1’s notes cite improved gamepad implementation and the ability to select a gamepad model, but a controller cannot fix an underlying compatibility issue.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The APK will not install
- Check Android compatibility, available storage, and permission for the app used to install the APK.
- Confirm you downloaded the APK from the official release page and that an older package is not conflicting with it.
Container creation fails or Winlator crashes
- Check free storage and Android file permissions, and confirm whether you installed an unofficial fork with different requirements.
- Try a fresh container to distinguish a damaged environment from a game-specific problem. Back up game folders and saves before reinstalling or removing containers.
The installer does nothing
- Consider a 16-bit installer, damaged files, missing CD data, or the wrong executable.
- Try a complete already-installed game folder or a legitimate updated installer; the game itself may be more compatible than its setup program.
The game opens and immediately closes
- Try a different Wine Windows-version setting or graphics wrapper, changing only one at a time.
- For an older title, test
MESA_EXTENSION_MAX_YEAR=2003, as noted in the official README. - Check the shortcut’s target and working directory, and whether the game expects files beside its executable. Disable unnecessary overlays while diagnosing.
It runs slowly or too fast
- For slow performance, lower resolution, disable costly scaling, try the Box64 Performance preset, and close background Android apps.
- Use a game-specific shortcut and a graphics path appropriate to the phone. A faster CPU may not solve a renderer bottleneck.
- If gameplay is too fast, suspect old timing assumptions; performance presets are not a general speed-control fix.
The picture is tiny, stretched, cropped, or black
- Try Force Fullscreen or a lower in-game resolution; if fullscreen causes instability, test windowed mode.
- Try a different graphics wrapper only after recording the working baseline. External-display or desktop-mode behavior depends on phone and build support.
Audio crackles or the game asks for a CD
- For crackling, test a higher ALSA/PulseAudio average latency; 90 ms is the official README’s example for Unreal Gold, not a guarantee for other games.
- For a disc prompt, determine whether the game needs data, CD audio, a drive letter, or an old copy-protection check. Ownership alone does not make an incompatible disc check work in Wine.
When another option is a better fit

For any route, distinguish a game that merely starts from one that also renders correctly, plays sound, saves, accepts your controls, and remains stable over a session. Old DirectDraw behavior, copy protection, 16-bit components, timing, case-sensitive paths, Android thermals, and background power management can all matter. Back up saves and a working container before updates, and keep a note of each game’s successful shortcut settings.
