What does “caught up” mean in Final Fantasy XIV?
For a player preparing for a new expansion, being caught up means reaching the latest main-scenario quest available to their game—not merely finishing the previous expansion’s base story. Major story chapters continue in post-expansion patches, and later patches can add further quests. The endpoint therefore changes over time.

Square Enix’s Dawntrail Patch 7.5 page identifies “Trail to the Heavens” Part 1 with patch 7.5 and Part 2 with patch 7.56. The page gives April 28, 2026 as Patch 7.5’s release date. The Eorzea Database’s quest page is marked Patch 7.56 and lists Dawntrail main-scenario and post-Dawntrail quest groups. Use these as reference points, not as a permanent endpoint: check the Main Scenario Guide in-game and the latest Lodestone patch notes for the current quest in your version.
#1 Best Overall
- A new adventure awaits in Norvrandt
- New jobs, including gun breaker and dancer
- New playable races: Viera and Hrothgar
- Level cap increase from 70 to 80
- New cities to explore: The Crystarium and Eulmore
There is no next-expansion release date established by the cited official pages. It is more useful to aim for the latest available main-scenario patch than to plan around an unannounced date or an assumed amount of time remaining.
That also means “caught up” is not a permanent status. A character can reach the current endpoint and still have new main-scenario quests to complete after a later patch. If you are planning with friends, compare your active quest with theirs rather than relying only on an expansion name or an old guide. The latest quest shown in your own game is the practical checkpoint.
Choose the catch-up route that fits your goal
There are three distinct options: play the missing quests, buy and use an eligible scenario skip, or replay completed chapters with New Game+. They do different things. Playing preserves the story experience and advances your character through the normal scenario; a skip changes scenario completion without raising job level; New Game+ revisits completed story rather than advancing unfinished quests.
| Route | Story experience | Cost and time | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Play the missing Main Scenario Quests | Complete the story in sequence without skipping the chapters you have not seen. | No scenario-skip item is needed. The time required depends on where you stopped and how quickly you play; Square Enix’s cited pages do not provide a reliable universal estimate. | Use the in-game Main Scenario Guide to identify your current quest, and meet the level and expansion requirements as you progress. |
| Use a Tales of Adventure scenario skip | Skips only the scenario covered by the item and starts the character at the next storyline. | It is an optional paid digital item. The current price and full item catalog are not stated in the cited guide; check the official guide and Online Store before purchase. No reliable time-saving estimate is established. | The scenario skip does not raise job level. You need the required level and registered expansion access for the next Main Scenario Quest. |
| Replay with New Game+ | Replays eligible chapters that you have already unlocked by completing their final quests. | No catch-up time or price figure is stated in the cited notes. This route is for revisiting story, not clearing unfinished quests. | Check the current in-game New Game+ details, including gameplay restrictions while the mode is active. |
If you mainly want the narrative, play the missing scenario. If you have already decided to skip a defined stretch of older story, inspect the Tales of Adventure item’s exact coverage and prerequisites before buying. If you want a refresher on a chapter you finished, use New Game+. A job-level boost is a separate item from a scenario skip; do not treat one as a substitute for the other.
The decision is easiest if you separate four questions: how much story you want to experience, whether you are willing to pay for an optional skip, what level your job is, and whether the required expansion is registered. Playing has no scenario-skip purchase cost, but the time it takes varies with your progress and pace. A skip costs money through the official Online Store, but the amount and current catalog need to be checked there. New Game+ is a replay choice, not an alternative way to clear the story you have not completed.
How to catch up by playing the main story
- Find your current quest. Open the in-game Main Scenario Guide and use its current main-scenario quest to locate your place in the story. If you are unsure whether a newer patch has added quests, compare the quest list with the latest official Lodestone patch notes and Eorzea Database.
- Continue the Main Scenario Quests in order. Complete the active quest and follow the next main-scenario objective rather than relying on an old expansion-end guide. Post-expansion patches can contain story that lies between an expansion’s initial ending and the next expansion’s opening.
- Meet each progression requirement when it appears. A quest may require a particular level and access to its associated expansion. If the quest cannot be accepted or continued, check the displayed requirement and your account’s registered expansion access before assuming that a story skip is necessary.
- Recheck the endpoint after major patches. When you reach the quest you thought was current, check the Main Scenario Guide again. Compare the result with the latest official patch notes; a named quest or patch endpoint from an older guide may no longer be the newest one.
Playing is the straightforward choice when you want the complete story and do not want to trade away chapters for speed. How much remains depends on where you stopped. The official references cited here do not give an average catch-up duration, hours-per-expansion figure, or a dependable timeline for an individual player, so a single estimate would be misleading.
Rank #2
- Features a vibrant cast of characters, hundreds of quests, and exciting locales to explore
- Tackle challenging dungeons and raids
- Experience all of the jobs/classes on a single character
If you have been away for several patches, begin by identifying the active quest rather than trying to reconstruct the order from memory. Keep following the Main Scenario Guide’s current objective and complete its next quest before looking for a later chapter. This prevents a common mix-up: an expansion’s launch story, its post-expansion quest line, and the current patch’s story are not necessarily the same endpoint.

Use quest requirements as a diagnostic, too. If you cannot accept the next quest, first read what the game says is missing. A level requirement calls for character progression; an expansion-access requirement calls for the appropriate registered license. A skip may move a story flag, but it is not a general fix for either kind of unmet prerequisite.
How Tales of Adventure scenario skips work
Tales of Adventure are optional items offered through the official FINAL FANTASY XIV Tales of Adventure guide. Square Enix describes them this way: “Or perhaps you would like to catch up with your friends? If so, the Tales of Adventure optional items can give you the boost you need!” That is the publisher’s promotional description; the practical limit is that a scenario item completes only the story covered by that item. It is not a universal completion of every quest through the newest patch.
The guide lists optional scenario items through Endwalker. Because the current catalog and item coverage can change, confirm the exact item endpoint and account requirements in the official guide and Online Store before purchasing. Do not infer from the name of an expansion that a particular item skips every quest associated with it; read the item’s stated coverage.
What a scenario skip changes—and what it does not
- It changes scenario completion. The item marks its covered story as complete and places the character at the next storyline.
- It does not raise the job level. You still need the level required by the next Main Scenario Quest. A separate job-level boost is a different product.
- It does not grant every expansion license. The appropriate expansion must be registered on the account to progress into content that requires it.
- It does not necessarily reach the latest patch. The item’s coverage determines where the skipped story ends; later quests may still need to be completed normally.
Before you buy one
- Identify the story chapter you want to bypass and the next storyline where you want to resume.
- Read the current item description in the official Tales of Adventure guide and Online Store. Confirm the covered scenario, account or platform conditions, and current availability.
- Check the level required for the next Main Scenario Quest and whether the relevant expansion is registered to your account.
- Decide whether you also need a separate job-level boost. Do not assume a scenario item includes one.
- After using the item, check the Main Scenario Guide for the next available quest and resolve any level or expansion-access requirement it displays.
The cited guide does not establish a current price, and there is no need to buy a physical item to catch up. These scenario skips are digital items offered through the game’s official Online Store.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThink of a scenario skip as a change to quest completion, not as a package that prepares every part of a character for later content. The item’s stated endpoint matters: if you want to resume at a particular storyline, verify that the item actually covers the chapters before it. If you expect it to carry you to the newest patch, check that expectation against the item description rather than the expansion label.

If you are new to the game and do not yet own the game or the expansion licenses needed for the story you want to play, the relevant purchase is a game edition that includes the required access, not a physical “catch-up” item. FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Complete Edition may be a product to investigate for that situation, but confirm its current contents and compatibility for your platform before buying. Most players who already own the game need no physical catch-up product. Tales of Adventure are digital Online Store items; no current marketplace listing or price is established here.
Do you need to level if you buy a story skip?
Yes, if your job is below the level required for the next Main Scenario Quest. A scenario skip completes covered quests; it does not increase job level. The character can therefore arrive at the next storyline without meeting its level requirement and will need to gain levels before continuing.
Expansion access is a separate check. The official guide says players must have the designated expansion registered to proceed into the relevant expansion story. A story skip does not replace an expansion license, and owning the license does not itself satisfy a quest’s level requirement. Check both conditions when choosing an item and again if the next quest is unavailable.

One changes which scenario quests count as complete; the other is a separate optional product related to job level. The Tales of Adventure guide distinguishes the two. Read each item’s current description and make the decision based on the specific requirement you are trying to meet. Buying a scenario skip alone does not promise that your character can immediately accept every subsequent quest.
How New Game+ helps—and where it does not
New Game+ lets you replay eligible chapters after completing the chapter’s final quest. It is useful if you have finished a stretch of story but want to revisit its scenes and events before continuing, or if you want to refresh your memory without starting a new character. Square Enix’s Patch 7.1 Notes describe the system and its gameplay restrictions while it is active.
New Game+ is not a shortcut for unfinished story: it replays chapters already unlocked by completion and does not advance the character through quests they have not cleared. If you stopped in the middle of a chapter, continue the active Main Scenario Quest rather than expecting New Game+ to complete it. Before entering the mode, review its current in-game details so you know which gameplay activities are restricted while replay is active.

Use it when you want a recap of material you have already completed, not when your aim is to move a quest marker forward. Eligibility depends on having completed the final quest for the relevant chapter, so someone who left a chapter unfinished should continue from the active quest. Since the official notes describe restrictions during replay, check the in-game explanation before activating New Game+ and plan around those limits.

Common catch-up mistakes to avoid
- Stopping at the expansion’s original ending. Post-expansion patches add main-scenario quests. Check the current guide and patch notes instead of assuming an expansion launch story is the latest chapter.
- Buying the wrong kind of boost. A job-level boost and a scenario skip are separate items. Check the exact item description and do not assume either one grants the other’s benefit.
- Expecting a scenario skip to meet every requirement. The next quest can still require a higher job level and registered expansion access.
- Using New Game+ as a skip. It is a replay feature for unlocked chapters, not a tool for completing unfinished story.
- Planning around an unannounced expansion date or a guessed playtime. The cited official pages establish neither a next-expansion release date nor a universal catch-up duration. Set a practical goal—reach the latest available main-scenario quest—and check official announcements and patch notes for changes.
Another easy mistake is assuming the name of a skip item tells you exactly which quests it covers. Confirm the listed scenario endpoint and any account conditions in the current item listing. Likewise, do not assume the character’s next step is available just because the scenario flag changed: check level and registered expansion access separately.
Which route should you take?
- Choose normal progression if experiencing the story in sequence matters more than avoiding older quests. Follow the active Main Scenario Guide quest and continue through patch content.
- Consider a scenario skip if you deliberately want to bypass the specific older story covered by a current item. Verify the endpoint, current item requirements, job level, and expansion registration before spending money.
- Choose New Game+ if you have already completed the chapters and want to replay them. It will not clear the story you still have ahead of you.
For the patch references used here, the official Patch 7.5 page lists “Trail to the Heavens” Part 1 in patch 7.5 and Part 2 in patch 7.56, while the Eorzea Database page is marked Patch 7.56. Treat that as a dated, version-specific guidepost. The quest shown in your current Main Scenario Guide, checked against the latest official Lodestone notes, is the better test of whether you have reached the current story endpoint.
There is no universally best route. The right choice depends on whether the story itself is the reason you play, whether paying for an optional item is worthwhile to you, and whether your character meets the next quest’s requirements. If you have already completed a chapter but forgotten its events, replay it with New Game+; if you have not completed it, decide between playing it and using an item that explicitly covers it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I catch up on the FFXIV story?
Check the Main Scenario Guide for your current quest, then continue the Main Scenario Quests in order until you reach the newest available story. Compare your endpoint with the latest Lodestone patch notes, since post-expansion patches add story and the current endpoint changes over time.
Can I skip the story in FFXIV?
You can use an eligible Tales of Adventure scenario skip to complete the story it covers and start at the next storyline. It is optional and paid, and the item does not raise your job level or replace the expansion registration needed for later content. Check the current item description for its exact coverage and requirements.

Forge friendships, mount chocobos, and board airships as you and your companions create your own unique stories in Eorzea. Adventure alone or join up with friends to undertake epic quests, battle familiar Final Fantasy monsters, and acquire unique abilities and equipment.
How does New Game+ work in FFXIV?
New Game+ replays eligible chapters you have unlocked by completing their final quests. It is a way to revisit completed story, not a way to skip quests you have not finished or advance your current scenario progress. Check the in-game details for restrictions while replay is active.
Do I need to level if I buy a story skip?
Yes, if your job is below the level required for the next Main Scenario Quest. A scenario skip changes quest completion but does not raise your level. You also need the appropriate registered expansion access for the story you are entering.
How long does it take to catch up?
It depends on where you stopped and how quickly you play. Square Enix’s official pages cited here do not provide a reliable universal catch-up estimate, so plan from your own current quest rather than a fixed number of hours.

The answer is patch-dependent. Square Enix’s Dawntrail Patch 7.5 page lists “Trail to the Heavens” Part 1 in patch 7.5 and Part 2 in patch 7.56; check the current Main Scenario Guide and latest Lodestone notes for a newer endpoint in your version.
Does a scenario skip include a job-level boost?
No. Scenario skips and job-level boosts are separate items. Read the descriptions of the specific items you are considering, and do not assume that skipping quests makes your character meet the next quest’s level requirement.
The Bottom Line
To catch up, follow the Main Scenario Guide to the latest available main-scenario quest and verify it against current Lodestone notes. Play missing quests for the full story, use a Tales of Adventure skip only for the scenario it explicitly covers, or use New Game+ to replay chapters already completed. A scenario skip does not level your job or grant expansion access, so check both prerequisites before expecting to continue.
