To change a primary profession in WoW Classic, unlearn one of your current professions in the character’s Skills or Professions interface, then visit the trainer for the profession you want instead. A character can have up to two primary professions at a time, and dropping one may erase its skill progress.
How to change a primary profession
- Open your character’s Skills or Professions interface. The exact navigation and layout can vary by Classic client and UI setup.
- Select the profession you want to remove and choose its unlearn or forget control. Confirm the prompt if one appears.
- Visit a trainer for the profession you want to learn and train it. Blizzard-hosted player guidance describes this as the next step after unlearning the old profession; see Are Profession Changes still possible? and Change a profession.
What to check before unlearning
Your profession slots
Blizzard’s WoW Classic Primer for New Players lists nine primary professions and says a character can learn up to two at once. If both slots are occupied, you need to unlearn one before learning another primary profession.
Your skill progress
A 2019 player response on Blizzard’s forums says that forgetting a profession removes its old skill and relearning starts at zero. That is player guidance, not a universal official rule for every Classic version, so check your game version before dropping a high-skill profession. The response appears in Cambio de profesiones.
Primary profession, secondary skill, or specialization?
Blizzard distinguishes primary professions from secondary skills. The primer identifies Cooking, Fishing, and First Aid as secondary skills, separate from the two-primary-profession limit. A Classic Era forum discussion says those secondary skills cannot be unlearned in that context, but that detail is player-reported and version-sensitive; see Unlearning professions?.

Specializations are another separate consideration: Blizzard notes them for Blacksmithing, Engineering, and Leatherworking. The available guidance does not establish one specialization-reset rule that applies to every Classic version, so do not assume that unlearning and relearning will restore or reset a specialization in a particular way.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the exact interface can differ
Blizzard-hosted forum answers point players to the Skills or professions list and the profession’s unlearn control, but those are player-authored directions rather than current official support documentation. Classic has multiple client generations and interface layouts, so use the profession entry in your own character interface rather than relying on a universal key or button location.
