A Cabined Account cannot choose a custom Epic Games display name. A parent or guardian must first complete Epic’s consent and account-setup process. Once the account is eligible, its email is verified, and no two-week name-change cooldown is active, sign in to Epic Account Settings, enter the new name in Display name, and select Continue.
This changes the Epic Games identity only. A PlayStation Network online ID or Xbox Gamertag may continue to appear on those consoles.

First, identify which name you are trying to change
“Epic name” can mean two different account identities. The Epic Games display name belongs to the Epic account and is used in Epic’s own services and on several platforms. Console networks keep separate identities that Epic cannot edit from its account page.

If the child plays on PlayStation or Xbox and the old name remains there after an Epic change, that is normally expected: the two systems use different account-name fields.

Why a child account may not have a working display-name box
Cabined Account restriction
Epic can place an account created by a child into a Cabined Account when a parent or guardian has not completed the required setup. Cabined Accounts have restricted features, and selecting a custom display name is one of the unavailable features. The child cannot unlock that field by changing a parental-control toggle or by entering a console PIN.
Eligible account requirements
The standard change flow becomes available only after the parent or guardian completes consent and account setup and the account email address is verified. Epic also limits display-name changes to one every two weeks. A lock icon in Account Settings indicates that the account is still in this waiting period.
Parental controls are not the name editor
Epic’s parental-controls area controls which features are available to a child; it does not provide a separate box for typing a display name. A parent can sign in to the Epic Account Portal, choose PARENTAL CONTROLS, and enter the six-digit PIN to manage those settings. The actual name change is made later in Account Settings, after the account is eligible.

If the account is Cabined, start with the parent or guardian’s consent process rather than repeatedly trying the locked display-name field.

- Have the parent or guardian take over the setup. Use the consent instructions Epic provides for the child’s account. The adult, not the child, must complete the requested approval and account details.
- Finish every requested setup step. A partially completed consent flow can leave the account Cabined, so do not stop after an approval email or an initial form if Epic presents additional setup screens.
- Confirm that the account is no longer restricted for this feature. The goal is an account that can use a custom Epic display name. Parental-control availability settings and the display-name editor are separate controls.
- Keep the adult’s account information secure. The parent should use the correct Epic account credentials and avoid giving the child access to the parental-control PIN.
Until this process is complete, there is no supported workaround that lets a Cabined Account select a custom display name. Creating repeated names, reinstalling a game, or changing a console profile does not remove the Epic account restriction.
Verify the email address before editing the name
Epic’s normal display-name workflow requires a verified account email. If the account has not been verified, locate Epic’s verification message in the account email inbox and complete the confirmation step. Check spam or filtered folders if the message is missing, and make sure the adult is checking the email address actually attached to the Epic account.
After verification, sign out and back in if Account Settings still reports the address as unverified. The account must be eligible and verified before the name field can be saved through the normal process.

Change the Epic Games display name
Use this procedure once consent and setup are complete, the email is verified, and the previous change was at least two weeks ago.

- Sign in to the child’s Epic Games account. Use the account whose display name needs to change; editing a parent’s account will affect only the parent’s identity.
- Open Account Settings. Go to the account settings page in the Epic Games account portal.
- Find the Display name box. This is the Epic account field, not a PlayStation Network ID or Xbox Gamertag field.
- Enter the desired display name. Check the spelling and confirm that it does not reveal the child’s real name, school, location, age, or other identifying information.
- Select Continue. Submit the change when the button is available. If Epic accepts it, the new display name becomes the Epic identity used by the account.
- Allow the services to refresh. A game or launcher that was already open may continue showing the previous value until it refreshes or the player signs out and back in.
Epic says a display name can be changed once every two weeks. Treat that as a cooldown between successful changes, not as a promise that an additional change can be made immediately after opening the settings page.
What to do when the Display name field is locked
The account is still Cabined
If the field is absent, disabled, or accompanied by a message that custom names are unavailable, return to the parental-consent and account-setup process. A Cabined Account cannot select a custom name, so changing the PIN or reinstalling a game will not help.
The email is not verified
Complete email verification first. The standard editor depends on that verification, and the account may continue to show a restricted field until Epic recognizes the address as confirmed.

Epic displays a lock icon during the cooldown. Hover over the information icon next to the field to see when the last change occurred. Wait until that period has passed rather than repeatedly submitting the form. The cooldown applies even when the account holder wants to correct a spelling mistake soon after a change.

The wrong account is signed in
Epic accounts can be linked to several games and devices. Confirm the account email and account details before editing. If the child is using a console profile that belongs to a different Epic account, changing the name on another account will not affect the child’s games.
The page does not update
Close the launcher or game, sign out of the Epic account, and sign in again after the change. A cached session can display the prior name temporarily. If the Account Settings page still shows the old value, check whether the submission actually completed and whether the cooldown information changed.

This separation explains why a friend may see the new Epic name in one place and the old console identity in another. It is not necessarily a failed Epic update.

Epic’s Terms state that display names are publicly available. Epic may change a name if it is offensive or misleading, violates the Community Rules, or infringes another person’s rights. A name that saves successfully can still be changed later by Epic if it violates those standards.

- Use a creative nickname rather than the child’s real name.
- Do not include a surname, school, team schedule, town, street, phone number, or birth year that could identify the child.
- Avoid wording that impersonates another person, suggests an official Epic role, or deliberately misleads other players.
- Do not use slurs, harassment, sexual references, threats, or other prohibited material.
- Check capitalization and spelling before selecting Continue, because the two-week cooldown can prevent an immediate correction.
Epic’s young-player guidance recommends choosing a fun name and not using a real name. Parents can help a child brainstorm several non-identifying options before the editor is unlocked.
Parent checklist
- Confirm whether the account is Cabined.
- Complete the parent or guardian consent and account-setup process.
- Verify the email address attached to the Epic account.
- Sign in to the correct child account, not a parent’s separate Epic account.
- Open Account Settings and use the Display name box.
- Check the lock icon and information icon for the two-week cooldown date.
- Use a nickname that does not reveal identifying information and complies with Epic’s rules.
- Refresh the launcher or game after saving.
- If the old name remains on PlayStation or Xbox, change the platform identity separately.
Common misconceptions
“The parental-control PIN should change the name.”
No. The PIN opens parental-control settings. It can affect which options a child may use, but it is not a display-name editor.
“Changing the Fortnite name changes the console gamertag.”
No. A game can use the Epic display name while the console continues to show its own network identity.
“A child can bypass consent by choosing a name in the game.”
No. The Cabined Account restriction is applied to the Epic account. The supported route is parent or guardian consent and account setup.
“The account can be renamed again if the first choice was poor.”
Not immediately. Epic’s two-week limit applies between display-name changes, so review the proposed name before submitting it.
When to contact Epic Support
Contact Epic Support if consent and setup are complete, the email is verified, the two-week period has passed, and the Account Settings page still will not allow a change; if the account’s email or age information is incorrect; or if the account appears linked to the wrong platform profile. Include the account details Epic requests, but do not publish the child’s email address, birth date, parental PIN, or other private information in a public forum.
