On Nintendo Switch 2, open System Settings > Accessibility > Button Mapping to remap a connected controller. Choose the controller, select Edit Controller Mapping, assign functions to buttons, then select Save. The GL and GR buttons on supported controllers use a separate in-game Quick Settings route.
Change button mapping in System Settings
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Accessibility, then Button Mapping.
- Select the controller you want to change, then choose Edit Controller Mapping. Nintendo Support notes that “Only controllers that are currently connected will be displayed.”
- Select a button, then select the button function you want it to perform.
- Select Save to keep the new mapping.
To restore the default mapping, open Button Mapping and select Reset Controller Mapping. Nintendo says resetting does not delete registered presets. See Nintendo’s Guide to Accessibility Features on Nintendo Switch 2.

Map GL and GR buttons during gameplay
For the GL and GR buttons on a Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip or Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, make the assignment from Quick Settings while playing a game—not from the general button-mapping editor.
- While a game is running, hold the HOME button to open Quick Settings.
- Choose the button-mapping option and set the GL or GR assignment using the on-screen prompts.
Nintendo says these assignments are saved per game and per user, and shared between compatible controllers. You can also add Button Mapping to Quick Settings as a shortcut to its System Settings page. See Nintendo Support’s Quick Settings guide.

Which controllers can be remapped?
Nintendo lists these controllers as supporting button mapping on Switch 2:
- Joy-Con 2
- Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller
- Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip
- Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
A controller must be connected to appear in the selection list. Not every physical control can be remapped: Nintendo says POWER, volume, HOME, and SYNC buttons cannot be configured, and another button cannot be assigned to act as POWER, volume, or SYNC. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 accessibility guide for the feature details.

Find related controller settings
Button Mapping is separate from other controller options. For stick behavior and additional settings, open System Settings and use the controller-related options shown on your console:
- Control stick mapping and orientation: Nintendo’s accessibility guide describes changing which side receives left-stick or right-stick input and changing the orientation of Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con control sticks.
- Grip/order: Change how controllers are held or ordered for play.
- Controller vibration: Adjust vibration separately from button assignments.
- Joy-Con 2 Mouse Controls: Find the mouse-control options and sensitivity setting for Joy-Con 2.
For the available settings and their locations, consult Nintendo Support’s Nintendo Switch 2 System Settings Overview and Nintendo’s Switch 2 accessibility overview.

Recognize a changed mapping and choose whether to reset
A wrench icon beside the controller in use indicates that one or more inputs have been remapped or disabled. If a message appears when waking the console from sleep, choose Reset the Button Mapping to return to defaults, or Use Without Resetting to keep the current configuration. Nintendo explains this message in its controller button mapping support article.
