The quickest way to change a running Nitrox server to Creative is to join as an administrator, press Y to open chat, and enter /changeservergamemode creative. Nitrox documents survival, creative, freedom, and hardcore as accepted mode values.

Nitrox has two practical ways to change the mode. The administrator command is intended for someone already connected to the server. The hosting-panel method changes the saved server configuration and is intended for the person who controls the server instance.

Do not use the panel workflow while the server is still running. The hosting instructions from BisectHosting, Citadel Servers, and AA Game Hosting all use the same stop, edit, save, and start sequence, although the menu names differ.

Change the active mode with the Nitrox admin command
This is the shortest route when you have administrator access and can join the server.
- Connect to the Nitrox server as an administrator. A normal player account is not enough for the documented command route. If you cannot use administrator commands, use the hosting-panel method or ask the server owner to perform the change.
- Open the Nitrox chat window. Press Y while connected.
- Enter the mode-change command. Type
/changeservergamemode creativeexactly, including the leading slash and the spelling ofcreative, then submit it. - Verify the result in the server. Check that the server accepts the command and that the rules now reflect Creative. Players can reconnect or otherwise verify the new rules if necessary; the documented command guidance does not establish a universal reconnect requirement.
The command changes the server game mode rather than changing a single player’s personal setting. Anyone joining that server is therefore subject to the mode selected for the server.

Use the value that corresponds to the mode you actually want. Do not add quotation marks, extra punctuation, or a mode name outside this documented set.

Change the saved setting in a hosting panel
Use this procedure when your Nitrox server is rented or managed through a web control panel. The labels vary by provider, but the order is consistent.
- Sign in to the hosting control panel. Open the control panel for the specific Nitrox server, not a general account page.
- Stop the server. Wait until the panel reports that the process has stopped before editing its configuration.
- Open the configuration area. BisectHosting places the setting under Startup. Citadel Servers and AA Game Hosting document a Configuration Files area and the main configuration editor. If your panel uses different wording, open the server’s primary game-settings editor rather than a file unrelated to startup options.
- Find Game Mode. Look under the game settings for the field labeled Game Mode.
- Select Creative. Choose Creative from the available value list.
- Save the configuration. Do not leave the page until the panel confirms that the new value was saved.
- Start the server again. The stop-and-start cycle is the documented restart requirement for the hosting-panel route.
After startup, connect and verify the mode from inside the game. If the panel shows Creative but the running server does not, stop the server again, confirm that the change was saved in the correct server instance, and repeat the startup sequence.

These menu names describe the documented panels, not a guarantee that every host uses identical navigation. The important distinction is to edit the server’s game-mode setting while it is stopped and then launch it with the saved configuration.

What Creative mode changes
The hosting documentation describes Creative as a mode for building and exploration without resource limitations. That makes it suitable when the group wants to construct bases, test designs, or explore without the normal resource restrictions associated with the ordinary progression experience.
The command documentation confirms the four accepted mode values, but the supplied instructions do not provide a complete rules reference for Survival, Freedom, or Hardcore. Consequently, the safe operational conclusion is limited: Creative removes the stated resource limitations for building and exploration, while the other values select their corresponding server modes. Do you need to restart the Nitrox server?
For the in-game command
A universal restart requirement is not documented for /changeservergamemode creative. The command guidance instead instructs an administrator to run the command and confirm the change. Because reconnect behavior is not specified as mandatory, do not assume that every server, client version, or player session must disconnect. Verify the active rules in your own session and have players reconnect only if the server or version requires it.

For a hosting-panel change
Yes. The documented hosting workflow requires the server to be stopped before editing, saved after selecting Creative, and started again afterward. Starting the server is what loads the saved panel value into the running instance.
Why the distinction matters
The two routes operate at different layers. The command is an in-game administrative action against the running server. The panel workflow edits the server’s stored configuration and therefore uses a controlled restart. If you edit a panel value without restarting, the currently running process may continue with its previous mode.

The server rejects the command
- Confirm that you joined with administrator permissions. The documented command route requires administrator access.
- Check that the command begins with
/and that the value is spelledcreative. - Use the server’s
/helpoutput to see whether the running version exposes the command and its syntax. - Check the Nitrox documentation for the version you are running. The available material does not provide a current, version-pinned official command reference, so syntax or permission behavior can change after an update.
The command is accepted, but the expected rules do not appear
- Verify that the command was issued on the intended server, especially if you have access to multiple Nitrox instances.
- Have a player leave and reconnect if the server’s behavior suggests that an existing session has not refreshed its rules. A universal reconnect requirement is not established, so treat this as a verification step rather than a guaranteed fix.
- Ask the administrator to confirm the active mode in the server rather than relying only on a chat message or a client assumption.
The panel still shows the old mode after you save
- Make sure the server was stopped before editing.
- Confirm that you changed Game Mode in the main startup or configuration editor, not an unrelated file.
- Save the page and wait for the panel’s save confirmation.
- Start the server only after the new value is visibly stored.
Creative works briefly, then the server returns to another mode
This usually indicates that the running server was started from a different configuration than the one you edited, or that the saved change did not persist. Stop the server, identify the correct instance and configuration editor, select Creative again, save, and start it from that same panel. If the value continues to revert, consult the provider’s support documentation for configuration persistence and check the Nitrox version-specific guidance.

The panel has no Game Mode field
Panel layouts differ. Look in the startup settings and the main configuration editor, using the provider’s own labels. If the setting is absent from both locations, the host may expose only a restricted set of controls. In that case, use the in-game administrator route if your account has permission, or ask the server owner or host to change the mode.
Changing back from Creative
The same two routes can select another documented value. As an administrator, use the server-mode command with survival, freedom, or hardcore in place of the Creative value. In a hosting panel, stop the server, select the desired value in Game Mode, save, and start it again.
Before switching away from Creative, tell connected players when the change will occur. Creative permits building and exploration without resource limitations, so a return to another mode can alter the rules that players are relying on. Verify the new mode after the server is running and make sure everyone knows whether reconnecting is needed for their session.
