How to Change Loot Lifetime and Despawn Time on a DayZ Server

Change DayZ loot cleanup by editing an item's lifetime in types.xml or the global fallback in globals.xml. This guide explains seconds, CE population rules, restock timing, idle mode, mod overrides, and troubleshooting.

Change a specific item’s <lifetime> in mpmissions/<your-mission>/db/types.xml. The value is seconds and controls how long an untouched copy can remain before Central Economy cleanup. For a server-wide fallback, change the relevant variable in db/globals.xml, most notably CleanupLifetimeDefault. Restart the server after editing.

Do not confuse cleanup with respawn. lifetime removes an existing entity; nominal, min, and restock determine when the economy attempts to replace stock.

What DayZ’s loot lifetime actually controls

DayZ’s Central Loot Economy (CE) continuously tracks items, vehicles, infected, animals, and other entities on the server. A lifetime value is a cleanup rule: after the specified number of seconds, an untouched item becomes eligible for removal. It is not a promise that every item will disappear at exactly that second, because the CE evaluates cleanup during its ongoing server cycles.

The per-item value is measured in seconds. For example, <lifetime>7200</lifetime> gives an untouched item a nominal two-hour lifetime. It does not mean the item will respawn two hours after it is taken, nor does it force a replacement to appear immediately after cleanup.

Items that players regularly use are treated differently from abandoned, untouched entities. The Central Economy reference describes persistent objects that are regularly used as generally not automatically despawning merely because a player walks away. A test in which a player picks up, moves, opens, or otherwise interacts with an object can therefore produce a different result from a test on an untouched spawn.

Before editing: identify the active mission and make a backup

  1. Stop the server or make a verified backup. Editing while the server is writing mission data can leave an incomplete XML file. A complete copy of the active mission folder gives you a rollback.
  2. Identify the mission currently loaded. Common examples include mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplus/, but the folder depends on the map and server configuration. Edit the live mission, not a template, old map, or unused backup.
  3. Check whether a mod supplies CE files. A mod may register its own economy XML through cfgEconomyCore.xml. Follow that mod’s installation instructions and avoid creating a second definition for the same class.
  4. Use an XML-aware editor. Preserve the existing tags, quotation marks, nesting, and encoding. Do not delete unrelated entries while changing one number.

Change one item’s lifetime in types.xml

This is the safest method when only one class, such as a weapon, food item, tool, or clothing piece, needs a different cleanup time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the active mission folder.
  2. Open db/types.xml.
  3. Search for the exact class name in a <type name="ClassName"> element. Class names are case-sensitive; use the name supplied by the item or mod rather than a display name.
  4. Locate that entry’s <lifetime> element and replace only its numeric value. The number is seconds.
  5. Save the file, validate that the XML remains well formed, and restart the server.

A representative entry looks like this:

<type name="ExampleItem">
    <nominal>20</nominal>
    <min>10</min>
    <lifetime>7200</lifetime>
    <restock>0</restock>
    <flags count_in_cargo="1" count_in_hoarder="1" count_in_map="1" count_in_player="1" crafted="0" deloot="0" />
</type>

In this example, 7200 is two hours for an untouched copy. The other fields remain independent controls. Changing the lifetime alone does not change the target population or the minimum delay before a replacement can be spawned.

Choosing a per-item value

Use a longer lifetime when you want ordinary world spawns to remain available between player visits. Use a shorter value when abandoned clutter is the problem. Test one class first; changing every item at once makes it difficult to identify a bad value, a syntax error, or a mod override.

A lifetime is not an inactivity timer that resets whenever a player looks at an item. It is a CE cleanup parameter. If an item is taken, moved, stored, or otherwise counted by the economy, its later handling follows the CE’s population and persistence rules rather than a simple “spawn plus N seconds” countdown.

Change the global cleanup fallback in globals.xml

Use the global file when you need to alter the default applied to categories that do not have a more specific lifetime. Open mpmissions/<your-mission>/db/globals.xml, find the relevant <var> under <variables>, edit its value, save, validate, and restart.

The documented vanilla values are:

Variable Documented value What it covers
CleanupLifetimeDefault 45 seconds Global default cleanup lifetime when a more specific rule is not present
CleanupLifetimeRuined 330 seconds Cleanup lifetime for ruined objects
CleanupLifetimeDeadInfected 330 seconds Cleanup lifetime for dead infected
CleanupLifetimeDeadPlayer 3600 seconds Cleanup lifetime for a dead player’s body

The 45-second default is particularly important when an item has no explicit <lifetime> in its type definition. Such an item can appear to vanish almost immediately, even though no class-specific timer was deliberately configured. A global change affects every category that inherits that fallback, so it has a much wider impact than editing one <type> entry.

A class-specific lifetime should be treated as the more precise setting. If changing CleanupLifetimeDefault does not affect a class, inspect that class for an explicit lifetime and check whether a mod-loaded economy file supplies an override.

Lifetime, population, and restock are different settings

These fields work together, but each answers a different question.

Setting Question it answers Operational effect
lifetime How long may an untouched entity remain? Allows CE cleanup after the value in seconds is reached.
nominal How many copies should the economy target? Sets the desired population for the class.
min When is the population low enough to replenish? Defines the threshold at which CE attempts to restore stock.
restock How soon may a replacement be spawned after removal or taking? Sets a minimum replacement delay; it is separate from cleanup lifetime.
flags Which locations and inventories count? Controls whether copies in cargo, hoards, the map, or player inventory are included in economy totals.

For example, increasing lifetime keeps untouched copies in the world longer, but it does not raise nominal. If the class is already at its target population, CE has no reason to create another copy. Conversely, reducing lifetime can remove abandoned copies without making replacements appear sooner if restock or population thresholds still prevent spawning.

Despawn versus respawn: the timing you should expect

Despawn is cleanup of an existing entity after its lifetime condition is met. Respawn, more accurately replacement or replenishment, is a separate CE decision based on the class’s current count, nominal, min, restock, usage and category rules, and counting flags.

When a player takes an item, the count may fall below the relevant threshold. CE can then wait for the restock delay and a later economy cycle before spawning a replacement. When an untouched item is cleaned up, the same population logic applies. The replacement is not guaranteed to appear at the exact instant the old entity disappears.

Why a test can look inconsistent

  • The server evaluates CE continuously rather than on a visible, per-item countdown.
  • An item may be counted in a player’s inventory, a container, a hoard, or another location because of its flags.
  • Usage, category, and map restrictions can limit valid spawn locations.
  • The server may enter idle mode when nobody is connected.
  • Player interaction can make an object persistent instead of behaving like an untouched spawn.

Empty servers and idle mode

IdleModeCountdown is documented as 60 seconds. When no players are present, the economy can enter idle mode. Wall-clock observations made while the server is empty therefore may not match an active-server test: a timer may appear paused, delayed, or otherwise different because CE is not operating under the same active conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a meaningful comparison, test with at least one player connected, record the server time and the item’s location, and avoid interacting with the item if you are testing untouched cleanup. Repeat the test after a restart if you changed a mission file, because the old process may still be using the previous configuration.

How to tune a server without causing economy problems

For slower cleanup of ordinary loot

  1. Choose the affected classes rather than changing the global default first.
  2. Set a longer <lifetime> for those classes in types.xml.
  3. Leave nominal, min, and restock unchanged during the first test.
  4. Restart, observe an active-server cycle, and confirm that untouched copies remain while taken copies follow the expected replenishment rules.

For faster removal of abandoned clutter

  1. Identify whether the clutter is normal loot, ruined objects, dead infected, or dead-player bodies.
  2. Change the narrowest applicable per-class lifetime, or the matching global cleanup variable when no specific class rule exists.
  3. Remember that regularly used objects may not disappear simply because players leave the area.
  4. Test on an active server; an empty server can enter idle mode and distort the apparent interval.

For faster replacement after players take loot

  1. Check nominal and min first. A class at or above its target does not need another copy.
  2. Check restock. A nonzero value can delay replacement even after the count falls.
  3. Check valid usage and category assignments, where present, so the item has legal spawn locations.
  4. Check the flags that determine whether copies in cargo, hoards, the map, or player inventories still count toward the target.
  5. Only then adjust lifetime if abandoned entities are also part of the problem.

Modded economy files and cfgEconomyCore.xml

A mod can provide its own Central Economy XML files instead of relying only on the mission’s vanilla definitions. Bohemia Interactive’s Central Economy reference describes cfgEconomyCore.xml as a configuration file located in mpmissionsyour.mission; it is used for CE class and file registration.

If a mod’s instructions tell you to register a file, make that registration in the active mission’s economy-core configuration exactly as documented. Do not copy the mod’s types.xml over the mission file blindly, and do not create duplicate definitions for the same class. A duplicate or incorrectly registered file can make a valid edit appear ineffective or can prevent the CE configuration from loading.

When a mod controls the item, treat the mod’s file as authoritative for that class unless its documentation specifies an override mechanism. After any change, inspect the server’s CE logs if logging is enabled through the economy-core configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting checklist

An item disappears almost immediately

  • Open its <type> entry and check whether it has an explicit <lifetime>.
  • If it does not, it may inherit the documented 45-second CleanupLifetimeDefault.
  • Check for a mod or override file loaded through cfgEconomyCore.xml.
  • Confirm you are observing an untouched item on an active server, not an interacted object or an empty server in idle mode.

The item never returns after being taken

  • Confirm that the current count can fall below min.
  • Check whether nominal is already satisfied by copies in containers, hoards, the map, or player inventories.
  • Inspect restock for a deliberate delay.
  • Verify valid usage and category tags and legal spawn locations.
  • Check the class’s counting flags and CE logs.

The edit has no visible effect

  • Make sure the file belongs to the active mission and map.
  • Confirm the server was restarted after saving.
  • Validate XML syntax: one missing closing tag can invalidate the file or cause the server to ignore part of it.
  • Search for another definition of the same class supplied by a mod.
  • Check server CE logs when economy logging is enabled.

The server fails to load the economy configuration

  • Restore the backup, then reapply one change at a time.
  • Compare the edited entry with the surrounding XML for balanced tags and valid numeric values.
  • Remove accidental duplicate class definitions or conflicting registrations.
  • Restart only after the mission files pass an XML validation check.

Per-item and global settings compared

Decision Use types.xml when… Use globals.xml when…
Scope One item class or a small, known group needs a different lifetime. Many classes without specific values should share a fallback.
Risk The change is narrow and easier to roll back. The change can affect every category inheriting the default.
Diagnosis You know which class is disappearing. The class lacks an explicit lifetime and is inheriting the global rule.
Mod compatibility The class is defined in the active mission file and not overridden. The global value is not superseded by a registered mod economy file.

A reliable verification procedure

  1. Write down the class name, original value, new value, map, mission path, and server restart time.
  2. Keep one untouched test item in a known location. Do not pick it up or move it.
  3. Keep a second copy that you deliberately take or store, if you are testing replacement behavior.
  4. Leave a player connected so the server is not in empty-server idle mode.
  5. Observe cleanup and replacement separately. Record when the untouched item disappears and when CE later creates a replacement.
  6. Review CE logs and compare the result with nominal, min, restock, usage/category rules, and flags.
  7. Change only one control at a time. If you alter lifetime, restock, and population values together, you cannot tell which setting produced the result.

The most dependable rule is simple: edit <lifetime> for a class-specific cleanup change, edit the matching globals.xml variable for a fallback change, and use nominal, min, and restock when the real problem is how quickly loot is replaced. Restart the active mission and test under active-player conditions before judging the result.
