Change an item’s <cost> value in the active mission’s db/types.xml entry. DayZ’s Central Economy uses that value as a priority weight during respawn and cleanup; higher values are described as higher priority. Save valid XML, restart or reload the correct server instance, and wait for later economy cycles before judging the result.

Do not use nominal to set priority. That field controls how many copies the economy tries to maintain. Quantity, location, and cleanup behavior are controlled by separate fields.

What “loot priority” means in DayZ
DayZ’s Central Economy continuously evaluates the items defined in the server mission. It decides when items should be spawned, replenished, or removed during cleanup. The cost value is the field used as the item’s priority weight in those decisions. The reference documentation describes higher cost values as higher priority.
Priority is not the same as abundance. A high-priority item can still be rare if its target count is low, its location tags are restrictive, or the economy has not reached the relevant restock or cleanup conditions. Conversely, raising an item’s target count does not make it a higher-priority candidate; it asks the economy to maintain more copies.

The economy is server-side. Players do not download your XML files and cannot see Central Economy state directly. They only see the eventual result in the world after the server loads the edit and completes enough economy cycles for the new weighting to matter.
Which file and mission to edit
The file you need is the types.xml inside the mission actually selected by your server configuration. In a standard installation, that is the mission’s db/types.xml file. Common mission directories include:

The folder name depends on the map and on how your host lays out server files. Confirm the active mission in serverDZ.cfg and follow the path used by that particular server instance. Editing a similarly named mission that is not active produces no in-game change.
Private-console hosting rules identify types.xml as one of the variables operators may change. Your host can still impose its own maintenance procedure, file permissions, or restart controls, so use the panel’s supported stop, maintenance, and reload options.
What each economy field controls
Change one class entry and one kind of setting at a time. The following fields are the ones most often confused with priority:

These controls interact. For example, an item can have a high cost but remain absent from a town if its usage and value classifications do not permit that location. It can also have a large nominal count while appearing slowly if the minimum threshold, restock delay, lifetime, or counted containers keep the economy from requesting a new copy.

Safe step-by-step procedure
1. Stop the server or enter supported maintenance mode
Do not edit a live file while the server may be writing or reloading the mission. Stop the server from the host panel, or use the host’s documented maintenance mode. If the panel offers separate instances, identify the exact instance before making changes.
2. Back up the mission folder
Copy the entire active mission folder, or at minimum its db directory and configuration files, before editing. Keep the backup outside the file you are about to overwrite. A backup gives you a known-good XML version if a parser error prevents startup or if a tuning experiment has an unwanted effect.
3. Open the active mission’s database file
Use the mission path selected by serverDZ.cfg, then open db/types.xml. Do not assume the map name from an old installation or from a second server on the same host. A correct edit in an inactive mission is indistinguishable from a failed edit when you are looking only at the game.
4. Find the exact class entry
Search for the item’s class name exactly as the server defines it. Class names are case-sensitive in practice because the entry must match the item definition the economy loads. Edit only the matching <type name="..."> block, not every occurrence of a similar display name.
5. Change only the cost value for a priority test
Inside the selected block, change the number between <cost> and </cost>. Leave nominal, min, location tags, quantities, and flags unchanged for the first test. Isolating the variable makes it possible to tell whether a later result came from priority rather than from a simultaneous abundance or placement change.
6. Check the XML before saving
- Keep one opening and closing element for every tag.
- Keep the
<type>element’s name and all required child elements intact. - Ensure
nominalis greater than or equal tomin. - Retain valid
category,usage, andvaluenames for the server’s limits definitions. - Preserve valid flag attributes and their values.
A malformed file or an invalid classification can stop the economy from loading correctly. If your editor has XML validation, use it; otherwise, compare the edited block with the backup and inspect every opening and closing tag.

7. Save, restart or reload, and allow economy cycles
Save the file, then restart or reload the server through the host’s supported control. A restart applies the file, but it does not guarantee an immediate visible spawn. The economy still evaluates count thresholds, restock timing, cleanup, and location constraints. Observe the server over subsequent spawn cycles rather than checking one location immediately after startup.
8. Record the result and change one axis at a time
Note the class name, old and new cost, server version, map, restart time, and when you checked the world. If you later adjust abundance or placement, make that a separate change. This simple log prevents a cost experiment from being confused with a simultaneous change to nominal, lifetime, or usage.

The following entry shows the location of cost in an item definition. The values are an example structure; the appropriate number for your server is a relative tuning decision rather than a universal recommendation.

</type>For a controlled priority experiment, alter only 100 in the <cost> element, save, restart, and wait for later economy processing. Do not infer that the value shown is a recommended setting for every weapon, map, player population, or game build. No universal numeric cost recommendation is established; treat the number as a relative weight and validate it on the target server version.
Why changing nominal did not change priority
nominal is a target count, not a scheduling weight. If you raise it, the economy is asked to maintain more copies, but that does not tell the economy to favor the item over other eligible items during respawn or cleanup. If your objective is “make this class win priority relative to other classes,” use cost. If your objective is “have more copies in circulation,” use nominal and, where appropriate, review min, lifetime, and restock as separate decisions.
The min value is the replenishment trigger. A high nominal with a high minimum can produce a different refill pattern from a high nominal with a low minimum, even when cost is unchanged. That is why quantity tuning should be tested independently from priority tuning.

Choosing the right tuning strategy
Use the axis that matches the behavior you are trying to change:

Do not use cost to solve a location problem, and do not use nominal to solve a priority problem. These are different levers even when the symptoms look similar.
Location tags can override your expectations
The item’s category, usage, and value entries constrain where it is eligible to spawn. Their names must match valid entries in the server’s limits definitions. Increasing cost does not override those constraints. If a weapon has a military usage tag and a tier value that excludes civilian buildings, a higher priority weight will not make it valid in a civilian location.

When an item appears in the wrong places, inspect these classification fields and the corresponding limits definitions before changing cost. Preserve the existing valid structure unless you deliberately intend to change placement. A placement test should alter location classifications separately from a priority test so that the result is attributable to one change.

quantmin and quantmax are percentages describing how full a quantity-bearing item may be when it spawns. They do not increase or decrease the number of magazine or bottle instances. A magazine that appears too empty or too full requires a quantity-range adjustment, not a cost or nominal adjustment.
Values of -1 in the example indicate that the item is not using a percentage fill range in that entry. Do not copy those values blindly to an item that needs quantity control; preserve the class’s valid definition and change only the range relevant to that item.

Modded items and update-safe files
For a modded class, use a separate economy file registered through cfgeconomycore.xml when the mod’s documentation supports that pattern. This keeps custom definitions separate from the vanilla file and reduces the chance that an update overwrites your changes. Avoid replacing the vanilla economy file unnecessarily.

A definition can appear unchanged in your editor while the active registration has moved, been replaced, or no longer matches the mod’s current class names. Confirm the server is loading the file you edited, then restart the correct instance and wait for economy cycles.
Troubleshooting when nothing changes
The server shows the old behavior
- Confirm that the edited mission is the one selected by
serverDZ.cfg. - Verify that the path ends in the active mission’s
db/types.xml. - Search again for the exact class name and confirm the changed value is inside that entry.
- Restart or reload the correct server instance through the host panel.
- Wait for later economy cycles; a restart alone does not force an immediate visible spawn.
The item appears in the wrong places
Inspect category, usage, value, and the corresponding limits definitions. Cost affects priority, not location eligibility.
There are too few or too many copies
Review nominal, min, lifetime, and restock. Check the flags as well, because they determine which containers or locations count toward the economy’s total. Changing cost is not a substitute for setting the desired target quantity or refill behavior.
Magazines or bottles have the wrong fill level
Adjust quantmin and quantmax, which define fill percentages. They do not control instance count.

Move the custom definition into the mod-supported registered-file pattern, using cfgeconomycore.xml where documented. Then verify registration after each mod update instead of editing a file that the update owns.
The server will not load the economy
Restore the backup, compare the edited block for missing or mismatched tags, and check that classification names and attributes remain valid. Confirm that nominal is greater than or equal to min. Once the server starts with the backup, reapply the cost-only change carefully and validate the XML again.
How to evaluate a priority change
Use a repeatable observation window. Record the map, server build, player population context, class name, old and new cost, and restart time. Check more than one location and more than one economy cycle, because a single building or immediate post-restart observation does not reveal the server’s relative weighting.
- Keep quantity fields unchanged while evaluating cost.
- Compare the edited class with similarly eligible classes rather than with items that have different location tags.
- Do not treat one empty location as proof that the setting failed; thresholds, restock delay, cleanup, and counted containers all affect what you see.
- After collecting observations, change only the next intended axis and record that change separately.
If the result is worse than expected, restore the backup or return to the previous cost, restart the correct instance, and observe the next cycles before making another adjustment. This rollback method preserves a known baseline and avoids stacking untraceable edits.
