To change how much loot appears on a DayZ server, edit the relevant <type> entry in the mission’s db/types.xml, change nominal and min together, save the file, and restart the server. nominal is the Central Economy’s target count for the item across the map; min is the threshold that tells the economy to begin restocking. Raising only nominal is the most common reason a change appears to do nothing.

For a vanilla Chernarus mission, the path is usually mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplus/db/types.xml. Your host may use a different mission-folder name for Livonia, Sakhal, a custom map, or a modded mission, but the file remains the db/types.xml inside the active mission.

How the DayZ Central Economy controls loot
DayZ does not simply place a fixed copy of every item at every restart. The Central Economy (CE) tracks item counts and uses the economy configuration to decide when and where to create more. The types.xml file supplies per-item limits and timing values; other economy files define events and category names. The active mission’s economy.xml lists the economy files, including types.xml and events.xml.
The counts in a type entry are map-wide targets, not a promise that one military base, town, or loot building will contain that number. Distribution still depends on the item’s category, usage flags, tags, locations, events, and the CE’s normal spawning cycle. A larger target therefore makes more copies available to the economy over time; it does not guarantee an immediate pile of the item at one location.

What “quantity” means here
For ordinary countable objects, quantity means the number of spawned copies. Ammunition, magazines, food, medical items, and liquids can also have an internal fill percentage. That fill is controlled by quantmin and quantmax, which are separate from the number of copies controlled by nominal and min.
How to increase loot DayZ server: the exact procedure
- Identify the active mission folder. Open the server’s mission directory and locate the folder loaded by the server. For vanilla Chernarus this is commonly
mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplus. The file you need isdb/types.xmlinside that folder. - Stop the server before editing. A running server can overwrite, lock, or ignore a file while it is being changed. Use the host control panel or your normal server-management method to stop it cleanly.
- Back up the original file. Download or copy
types.xmland keep an untouched backup. XML mistakes can prevent the mission from loading, and a backup gives you a known-good rollback. - Open the item entry. Search for the item’s class name, for example
<type name="...">. The name must match the class name used by the game or mod. Do not change a similarly named item by mistake. - Change both count controls. Increase
nominalto the desired target and raiseminto a value below that target. Leavingminat its old value can delay restocking until the map-wide count falls below that old threshold. - Adjust persistence only if needed. Change
lifetimewhen you want untouched copies to remain in the world longer or be cleaned up sooner. It is measured in seconds; a value of10800represents three hours. - Save valid XML and upload it. Preserve the surrounding tags, quotation marks, and closing elements. If your host uses an FTP panel, upload the edited file to the active mission’s
dbdirectory, not a similarly named template or backup folder. - Restart the server. The CE normally fills gradually. A restart loads the new limits, but it does not necessarily create the full target immediately.
- Observe more than one cycle. Check the item in several valid loot areas and allow time for cleanup and restocking. A single visit immediately after restart is not a reliable test of a map-wide target.
Example of a count change
A simplified entry might look like this:

</type>To target about 60 copies instead of 20, change the count fields together, for example to nominal 60 and min 30. The numbers in this example are illustrative; choose values appropriate for your server and the item’s normal balance.

Why nominal and min should be changed together
Suppose an entry has nominal 20 and min 10. If you change only nominal to 60, the CE knows the new target but may not begin a refill while at least 10 copies still count toward the old trigger. The map can therefore remain far below 60 for a long time. Raising min at the same time gives the economy an earlier trigger.

Some community guides suggest keeping min near two-thirds of nominal. That is a rule of thumb, not an official value or a universal balance formula. A lower threshold produces less frequent restocking and can preserve scarcity; a higher threshold asks the CE to refill sooner. Test the result with your server’s population, storage rules, and item distribution.
DayZ types.xml lifetime restock: timing and persistence
lifetime
lifetime controls cleanup or persistence for items that remain untouched. The commonly shown value 10800 equals 10,800 seconds, or three hours. Increasing it can leave abandoned loot in the world longer, which may make fresh items appear less often because existing copies continue to count. Decreasing it allows stale items to be removed sooner, after which the CE can work toward its target again.
One guide reports that interacting with an item resets its lifetime timer. Treat that detail as lower-confidence behavior rather than a guarantee: the exact result can depend on the item, server version, and other CE rules. Change one timing value at a time and watch the server over a full cleanup interval.

Guides disagree about restock="0". One description says an item can respawn as soon as its count is below min; another describes zero as waiting for the next CE cycle. An older community forum explanation, approximately 2,780 days old at the time it was recorded, says the CE can respawn in bulk when the value is zero and that positive values create a per-item wait. Because that explanation is old and the sources conflict, there is no safe universal interpretation of zero.
For a production server, leave the existing value unchanged unless you have a specific reason to test it. If you do test it, record the server version, item count, player activity, and time between observations. Compare a zero value with a positive value on a controlled test server rather than assuming that either setting means “instant respawn.”
Categories, usage, tags and value: the filters that can defeat a change
Changing count fields does not make an item eligible to spawn everywhere. The category, usage, tag, and value names in a type entry must match definitions in cfglimitsdefinition.xml or the user definition file cfglimitsdefinitionuser.xml. A misspelled or undefined name can prevent the intended distribution even when nominal and min are high.

Before adding a new usage or category name, check the definitions loaded by the mission and use the exact spelling and capitalization already present. If you are editing a modded item, confirm that the mod’s class name and economy definitions are actually loaded. The available material only mentions mod handling in passing, so the exact override method depends on the mod and server setup; do not assume that copying a vanilla entry into an arbitrary file will override it.

DayZ loot not respawning: a diagnostic checklist
When a change appears ineffective, work through these checks in order. Each check addresses a different failure mode.
- Wrong mission folder: Verify that you edited the mission folder the server is currently running. A correct file in an inactive mission has no effect.
- Only nominal was raised: Compare the edited
nominalandminvalues. Raise the trigger as well, while keeping it below the target. - No restart: Confirm that the server was fully restarted after the upload. A panel “restart” that leaves the old process running will continue using the old values.
- Expecting instant filling: The CE fills gradually. Wait through a normal economy cycle and inspect multiple valid spawn areas.
- Existing items still count: Loot in containers, vehicles, player inventories, tents, or other counted locations may reduce the number the CE believes it needs to create, depending on the entry’s flags.
- Lifetime is too long: Old copies may still be present and counted. A high
lifetimecan make a server feel empty of fresh loot even though the target has not been reached. - Invalid XML: Check for an accidental deleted closing tag, an unescaped character, or a malformed attribute. Restore the backup if the server reports an economy or mission-loading error.
- Definition mismatch: Check
category,usage,tag, andvalueagainst the loadedcfglimitsdefinition.xmlorcfglimitsdefinitionuser.xml. - Wrong item name: Search the exact class name. A display name is not necessarily the value used in the
nameattribute. - Testing one location: A map-wide target does not promise a copy at the location you just visited. Test several places that match the item’s usage and category.
A controlled test that avoids false conclusions
- Choose one item and write down its original
nominal,min,lifetime, andrestockvalues. - Change only
nominalandmin, keeping all other attributes unchanged. - Restart the server and note the restart time.
- Check several eligible locations at consistent intervals instead of repeatedly sweeping one building.
- Allow enough time for the CE and any cleanup timers to operate before judging the result.
- If the item still does not appear, restore the backup or investigate the mission path, XML validity, definitions, and item class before changing more fields.
Changing stack fill instead of item count
If your real goal is fuller magazines, more rounds in a box, or more liquid in a container, changing nominal will not accomplish it. Adjust quantmin and quantmax for the quantity-based item. These values represent fill percentages; -1 delegates to the game’s default behavior. They control the amount inside each spawned object, while nominal and min control how many objects the CE targets.

For example, increasing a medical item’s nominal count creates more medical-item objects. It does not automatically increase the number of pills in each package or the rounds in each magazine. Treat object count and object fill as separate settings and change only the one that matches your goal.
Safe balancing practices for a change loot quantity DayZ server setup
- Make small, reversible changes. Increase one item or a small group, keep a dated backup, and observe the result before editing the entire file.
- Keep min below nominal. Equal values remove the intended trigger range and can produce behavior that is difficult to interpret.
- Do not use cost as a quantity control. It affects relative priority in a restock cycle, not the map-wide target.
- Separate count tests from timing tests. Change
lifetimeorrestockonly after you know the count change itself is working. - Account for persistence. A generous target combined with a long lifetime can flood storage locations, while a short lifetime can make scavenged areas look unusually sparse between cycles.
- Document the active version and mission. Record the server build, map, mission folder, edited values, and restart time so you can reproduce or undo the change.
What the economy files do—and do not do
economy.xml is the index that lists economy configuration files. It commonly references types.xml and events.xml; it is not itself the place where you normally set an item’s nominal count. types.xml holds the per-item entries described above, while the limits-definition files provide accepted category and usage names.
Do not edit a file merely because its name resembles the active configuration. Confirm the path through the mission that the server launches, preserve the XML structure, and restart after each deliberate change. There is no single official schema reference identified for every field and server version, so behavior that is not clearly established—especially restock="0"—should be validated empirically rather than treated as a guarantee.
