On mobile, you can update Minecraft to the latest release or opt into an in-development build, but the official instructions reviewed do not provide a way to select an arbitrary older version. The steps depend on whether you use Android or iPhone/iPad—and whether you want a stable update, a test build, or a downgrade.
Choose the version change you mean

Update to the latest stable version
Minecraft normally updates automatically on mobile. To update manually, open the game’s listing in the relevant app store and use the store’s update option if one is available. On Android, use Google Play; on iPhone or iPad, use the App Store’s manual-update flow. Store labels and layouts can change. See Minecraft’s mobile update instructions.
- Open Minecraft and note the version number at the bottom-right of the launch screen.
- Open Minecraft’s listing in Google Play or the App Store and check the version shown there.
- If an update is offered, install it through the store, then reopen Minecraft and check the launch-screen number again.
Try an in-development build
Beta and Preview builds are unfinished versions. They can contain bugs or behave differently from the normal release. Minecraft’s official overview says Android uses Beta, while Preview is available on other Bedrock platforms, including iOS. Players joining the same Beta/Preview multiplayer session need to be on the same Beta/Preview version. Read Minecraft’s Beta and Preview overview.
Android: join or leave Minecraft Beta
- Open Google Play and find Minecraft.
- Open the game’s listing and scroll to the bottom of its description.
- Select Join Beta, then confirm by selecting Join.
- To leave, return to the same listing and select Leave.
Joining Beta replaces the normal Minecraft client; it is not a way to keep both clients side by side. Back up your worlds before installing, as Minecraft recommends. Check the current Minecraft Beta or Preview mobile instructions for the latest enrollment details.

iPhone or iPad: use Minecraft Preview through TestFlight
Minecraft Preview enrollment on iOS is managed through Apple’s TestFlight and has limited capacity. Follow the current enrollment route in Minecraft’s mobile Beta/Preview instructions. If TestFlight says the beta is full, you cannot enroll at that time; availability may change.
Can you switch back to an older Minecraft version?
The official mobile support instructions covered here explain how to update to the latest release and enroll in Beta or Preview; they do not document a supported way to choose an arbitrary older release. If you need an older version for compatibility, these sources do not establish an official mobile downgrade route. Avoid treating sideloaded packages or unofficial downgrade instructions as Mojang-supported procedures.

Check compatibility before updating
For current iPhone and iPad compatibility, consult Minecraft’s live App Store listing. Its iOS requirements page states, “As of March 2025, you must update to iOS 14 to access online play and continue receiving updates for Minecraft.” That dated requirement is not a guarantee that every current feature works on every device running that minimum OS. Check Minecraft’s iOS requirements and the current store listing.
