With a picture on screen, change the PS4’s output at Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings > Resolution, then select a mode the monitor supports. If changing it leaves the display blank, use Safe Mode’s Change Resolution option: the console restarts at 480p so you can choose a compatible setting.
Change the resolution when you can see the screen
- Turn on the monitor and select the HDMI input connected to the PS4. PlayStation’s PS4 setup guidance specifies connecting the console’s HDMI OUT port to the display’s HDMI input.
- From the PS4 home screen, open Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings.
- Select Resolution, then choose a resolution supported by the monitor. If you are unsure which mode to use, try Automatic if it appears in the list. PlayStation documents Automatic selection for PS4 Pro; its guidance does not establish that every base PS4 revision presents the same choices.
- Check that the picture remains stable. If the image is visible but its shape or edges look wrong, use the monitor’s on-screen display or manual to check its scaling, aspect-ratio, or overscan controls; monitor menu labels and steps vary by model.
Recover from a PS4 black screen after changing resolution
If the monitor goes blank after a resolution change, reset the video output through Safe Mode rather than choosing a reset or initialization option. PlayStation’s Safe Mode guide says the PS4’s Change Resolution option restarts the console at 480p.
- Turn the PS4 off by holding the power button for about three seconds, until it shuts down.
- With the console off, press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller to the PS4 with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Choose Change Resolution. The PS4 restarts at 480p.
- When the picture returns, open Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings > Resolution and choose a mode the monitor supports.
Choose the specifically named Change Resolution option. Other Safe Mode choices include actions that can erase user data; they are not needed for this display recovery.
Why a PS4 monitor may show no signal
A resolution can be selected on the console but still fail to display if the monitor or another device in the HDMI path cannot handle it. Check these factors before assuming the monitor or PS4 is broken:

- Monitor capability: The monitor must support the selected output mode.
- Console model: 4K output is available only on PS4 Pro, not the base PS4.
- HDMI input and route: Confirm the monitor is set to the connected input. If the PS4 is connected through a receiver or switch, that device is part of the display chain and must support the intended signal.
- Cable and connectors: Check that the cable runs from PS4 HDMI OUT to the display’s HDMI input and that both ends are seated. A replacement cable is only a reasonable next step if the existing cable appears damaged or unreliable; buying a more expensive cable does not by itself change the PS4’s resolution options.
PS4 Pro resolution and 4K compatibility
PlayStation’s PS4 Pro 4K and HDR guide identifies 2160P – YUV420 and 2160p – RGB as resolution choices. It says Automatic selects the highest resolution available for the display and content. Options may be greyed out if the connected display does not support them.
For the intended PS4 Pro 4K setup, PlayStation says the display should support 4K/60Hz. If it does not, the picture may be scaled down to 2K/60Hz. Check that the display is connected to its 4K-capable HDMI input and consider every device between the console and screen, including the cable and any receiver or home-cinema equipment.

If a PS4 Pro produces no image with a 4K display, PlayStation describes a Safe Mode compatibility option: Set HDCP Mode > HDCP 1.4 Only. This is specific to certain 4K compatibility cases, not a routine resolution adjustment for every PS4 or monitor. It can limit output to 1080p; 4K requires HDCP 2.2 support across the connected devices, including the display and HDMI cables, as well as any receiver or home-cinema equipment.

Choose a resolution based on the whole setup
