How to Get Sound from a PS4 Connected to a Monitor

Connect PS4 HDMI OUT to the monitor, select the right input and check audio settings. If the monitor cannot play sound, use a compatible headset or another audio path.

Connect the PS4’s HDMI OUT to the monitor’s HDMI input, select that input, unmute the monitor and turn up its volume. On the PS4, check Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings and make sure audio is going to HDMI. If the picture works but there is still no sound, the monitor may not have speakers or a usable audio output; check its manual before choosing another audio path.

Start with the HDMI connection and audio settings

  1. Connect the PS4’s HDMI OUT port directly to an HDMI input on the monitor. Select that same input using the monitor’s controls. This is Sony’s standard PS4-to-screen connection: PlayStation’s PS4 setup guide.
  2. Check that the monitor is not muted and its volume is turned up. If you are using separate audio equipment, make sure that device is on and unmuted too.
  3. On the PS4, open Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings. Confirm that the output is appropriate for the HDMI-connected screen. Sony advises setting PS4 audio output to an HDMI device when troubleshooting missing sound: PlayStation’s picture and sound troubleshooting guide.

A working picture does not prove the monitor can produce sound. HDMI carries audio, but the display needs built-in speakers or an audio output connected to headphones or speakers to make that audio audible.

Check what audio connections the monitor actually has

Look up the exact monitor model in its manual or specifications. Check whether it has built-in speakers, a headphone jack or another audio-out connection. A port described as audio-in will not send sound to headphones or speakers, and monitor controls and input-specific audio settings vary by model.

  • Monitor speakers: Enable them if the monitor has a speaker setting, then check mute, volume and HDMI input.
  • Monitor audio-out or headphone jack: Connect headphones or powered speakers to the output. Match the cable and plug to the devices; external speakers need an audio signal from the monitor or another source.
  • No speakers or useful audio output: Use a headset connected to the controller, or consider an HDMI audio extractor as described below.

Choose the audio path that fits your setup

Audio path Best for What to check
HDMI to monitor speakers A monitor with built-in speakers Correct HDMI input, speakers enabled, volume up, and PS4 audio output set to HDMI.
Monitor audio-out to headphones or powered speakers A monitor that receives HDMI audio and has an audio output Confirm the port is an output and the plug or cable matches the audio device.
Headset connected to the PS4 controller Private listening or a monitor without speakers Choose All Audio for game and system sound, not only chat.
PS4 optical output to an audio system A PS4 model with an optical port and an optical-capable audio system Check the console model, select the optical output and use a format the audio system supports.
HDMI audio extractor A monitor without speakers or a usable audio output Check resolution and refresh-rate pass-through, HDCP compatibility, audio connector and supported audio format for the exact devices.

Use a headset through the PS4 controller

Connect a compatible headset to the controller, then open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones. Choose All Audio to hear game and system sounds through the headset. Chat Audio sends chat audio only. Sony’s headset manual describes Chat Audio as the default in its configuration: CUHYA-0080 Wireless Headset Instruction Manual.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use optical audio only if your PS4 model has the port

Optical output is model-dependent. Sony says the CUH-2000 series does not have a DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) terminal; other model series shown in its setup guide have one. Check the model number printed on the console before buying or connecting an optical cable. If the port is present, connect it to an audio system that accepts optical audio, then open Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings > Primary Output Port and select DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL). Choose an output format supported by the connected system; Sony warns that an unsupported format may damage speakers. See Sony’s PS4 setup guide and PS4 audio output settings.

Troubleshoot sound that is still missing

  • Reseat the HDMI cable. Disconnect and reconnect it at both ends, and verify that it is in the PS4’s HDMI OUT port and the monitor’s selected HDMI input.
  • Try another HDMI cable or monitor input, if available. This helps identify a cable or input problem.
  • Temporarily remove intermediary equipment. Disconnect capture devices and other audio/video equipment, then connect the PS4 directly to the monitor while diagnosing.
  • Recheck the monitor manual. Confirm it supports speakers or audio-out over the HDMI input you are using, and look for any relevant audio-follow-video or input-specific setting.
  • Check HDCP compatibility if the HDMI chain includes another device. Sony says: “Your PS4 console can’t output video and audio if a device connected via HDMI isn’t compatible with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection).” See PlayStation’s PS4 audio-output guidance.

When an HDMI audio extractor makes sense

An extractor can split audio from the HDMI connection when the monitor has neither built-in speakers nor a useful audio output. Choose one only after checking that its HDMI pass-through supports the resolution and refresh rate you use, that its audio output matches your headphones or speakers, and that the full chain is HDCP-compatible. Compatibility depends on the specific PS4, monitor and extractor; Sony’s support guidance does not certify third-party extractor products.
