You usually cannot change every Xbox safety setting directly in the Xbox app. Use the Xbox privacy dashboard for privacy and online-safety permissions, and Microsoft Family Safety for child restrictions, screen time, app limits, web filters, activity reports, and spending controls.
Choose the right Microsoft tool
| What you want to change | Use |
|---|---|
| Multiplayer, voice chat, messaging, clubs, sharing, or broadcasting | Xbox privacy and online-safety dashboard |
| Child screen-time schedules | Microsoft Family Safety |
| Block or limit a game or app | Microsoft Family Safety |
| Website or search filtering | Microsoft Family Safety, primarily with Microsoft Edge |
| Activity reporting | Microsoft Family Safety |
| Purchase approval | Family Safety or Xbox console Family settings |
| Add or remove a family member | Microsoft Family Safety |
The Xbox mobile and PC apps are not a universal parental-control panel. Microsoft separates Xbox account permissions from Family Safety controls, so the correct destination depends on the setting you need to change.

Before you change a setting
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns or administers the relevant Xbox profile.
- To manage a child, you must be a Family organizer.
- The child’s Microsoft account must be in your family group and must be the same account used on Xbox.
- Screen-time controls, reporting, and some device-based features require the Xbox or other device to be connected to the family group.
Family organizers can add members and manage family limits and permissions. See Microsoft’s guidance on Family Safety roles and permissions and adding people to a family group.

Change child safety settings with Microsoft Family Safety
Use Family Safety for screen time, app and game restrictions, content filters, activity reporting, and many spending controls. You can use the website or the separate Microsoft Family Safety mobile app—not necessarily the Xbox app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWeb dashboard
- Go to account.microsoft.com/family or family.microsoft.com.
- Sign in with the Family organizer’s Microsoft account.
- Select the child’s family-member card.
- Select Xbox or the relevant platform and settings area.
- Open Screen time, Apps and games, Content filters, Activity reporting, or Spending.
- Change the restriction or schedule, then save or finish when prompted.
Microsoft Family Safety app
- Open the Microsoft Family Safety app.
- Select the child’s name.
- Select Windows/Xbox/Mobile, depending on the control you need.
- Open Set time limits, Apps and games, Content filters, Activity reporting, or Manage spending.
- Change the setting and confirm it.
Microsoft documents these controls in its guides to setting up Family Safety and setting app and game limits.
Set Xbox screen-time limits
In Family Safety, select the child, choose Windows/Xbox, and set the daily allowance and permitted hours. Limits can be different for each day, or applied across several days. To remove a limit, turn the relevant limit off.
Important: Microsoft says Xbox screen time continues to count while the child is signed in, even if a game is paused or someone else is using the console. The child should sign out when finished. See Microsoft’s screen-time guidance.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Block or limit games and apps
These are different controls:
- Block app: prevents access to a particular game or app.
- App or game limit: allows access only for a specified duration or schedule.
- Age or content restriction: controls what is permitted according to content classification.
To block an item, open the child’s profile in Family Safety, select the Xbox tab, open Apps and games, open the item’s more-options menu, and choose Block app. Use the same menu and choose Unblock app to restore access. Only Family organizers can block or unblock apps. Microsoft’s instructions are available at Block or unblock apps.

Filter websites and searches
Open the child’s profile in Family Safety, select Content filters or the Edge platform, and turn on inappropriate-site and search filtering. You can also use an allowed-sites-only mode and add specific blocked or allowed websites.
Microsoft’s web and search filtering works with Microsoft Edge while the family member is signed in. It does not provide equivalent coverage for every third-party browser. If necessary, block other browsers through Apps and games. This limitation is described in Microsoft’s guide to filtering websites and searches.
Require approval for purchases
On an Xbox console, use the organizer account and open:
Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → Account → Family settings → Manage family members → select the child → Privacy & online safety → Xbox Live privacy → View details & customize → Buy & download
Turn on Ask a parent. Menu names can differ slightly between consoles and interface versions. Microsoft also provides Family Safety spending controls, including purchase notifications and approval-related options, through the Family Safety spending settings.

Change settings directly on an Xbox console
If you are with the console, you can manage many family permissions without opening the mobile app:
Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → Account → Family settings → Manage family members → select the child → Privacy & online safety
This route is useful when a web or mobile change has not synchronized, or when you need to confirm that the child’s profile is correctly added to the console. Make sure the child signs in with the Microsoft account that belongs to the family group. Microsoft explains how to connect a device to a Microsoft account.
Why a safety setting is unavailable or not working
You cannot change privacy settings
Check these common causes:
- You are signed in to the wrong Microsoft account.
- The profile is a child account, so an organizer must make the change.
- You are not the family organizer.
- The account belongs to another family group.
- The account’s birth date or consent status incorrectly identifies an adult as a child.
- The setting is controlled through the web privacy dashboard rather than the Xbox app.
Microsoft has a dedicated guide for privacy settings that cannot be changed. If Microsoft treats an adult account as a child, review the account’s recorded age and consent status rather than creating a second Xbox profile.
The child does not appear in Family Safety
- Confirm that you are signed in as the organizer.
- Check that the child accepted the family invitation.
- Make sure the child is not already in another family group.
- Confirm that the Xbox uses the same Microsoft account added to the family.
- Sign in on the Xbox with the child’s account so the console can be associated with it.
A member already in another family group may need to leave or be removed before joining a different one.
Screen-time limits do not work
- Confirm that the child is in the Family Safety group.
- Confirm that the Xbox is connected and the child is using the managed account.
- Check that another profile is not being used on the console.
- Have the child sign out after use; signed-in time can continue counting.
- Remove and re-add the limit if it appears stuck.
Family Safety limits are account- and device-dependent. They should not be treated as a universal restriction on every console, account, browser, or device.

Restrictions appear to be bypassed
Look for another adult account signed in, multiple profiles active at once, or the child using a different account. Website filters may also appear ineffective when the child uses Chrome, Safari, or another unsupported browser. On connected Windows devices, administrator-level access can create additional ways around restrictions. Microsoft recommends separate sign-in PINs and discusses these issues in its Family Safety troubleshooting guide.
Activity reports are incomplete
Activity reporting requires connected devices and is not a complete record of everything a child does online. Web activity reporting is tied to supported Microsoft Edge use, and reporting may be disabled or affected by consent settings. Microsoft also says the age at which a family member can opt out of activity-data sharing varies by country and local rules; the United States, for example, is treated differently from some other regions.
Adult accounts and Xbox safety settings
For your own adult Xbox profile, use the Xbox privacy and online-safety dashboard and sign in as the account holder. Family organizer controls are generally needed only when managing another family member.
If an adult cannot change settings independently, check the birth date and consent status recorded on the Microsoft account. Microsoft may continue treating the account as a child account until the relevant age or consent issue is resolved.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change Xbox parental controls from the Xbox app?
Some Xbox-related privacy settings may be accessible through account links, but the Xbox app is not the primary location for all controls. Use the Xbox privacy dashboard for online permissions and Microsoft Family Safety for child limits, filters, reports, and spending controls.
Recommended Free Tools
Do Xbox Family Safety limits apply to every console?
Not automatically. The child must use the managed Microsoft account, and the relevant Xbox or device generally needs to be connected to the family group.
How long do Xbox safety-setting changes take to appear?
Many changes apply after synchronization, but the player may need to sign out and back in on the Xbox app or console. If a limit remains ineffective, verify the account, device connection, and family-organizer role.
How do I remove a restriction?
Return to the same Family Safety or Xbox privacy setting and turn the limit off, unblock the app, or change the permission. A Family organizer may be required for a child account.
