To change the tags shown for a Team Fortress 2 server, edit the dedicated server’s tf/cfg/server.cfg, set the sv_tags value to a quoted comma-separated list, save the file, and restart the server. Then run status in the server console and check the sv_tags field. Tags help players filter and find community servers; they are not required for the server to appear in the community list.

What sv_tags controls
sv_tags is Team Fortress 2’s server-tag setting. It supplies short descriptors that matchmaking and server-browser interfaces can use for filtering. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes gametags as optional: when present, they let users filter servers based on the value.

A tag is descriptive metadata, not a gameplay rule. Writing Hightower does not change the map, and writing EU does not move a server to Europe. The value tells browsing tools how the server should be described. Use labels that accurately reflect the server’s location, maps, rules or other persistent characteristics.
Tags are useful for discoverability, but omitting them does not by itself remove a server from the community list. A server can be listed without custom tags.

Before you edit the configuration
- Access to the dedicated-server files: You need a file manager, SFTP/SSH access, or a hosting-panel editor that can open the server’s
tf/cfg/server.cfg. - Permission to restart: The change is loaded when the server starts, so you must be able to stop and start or restart the instance.
- A backup or rollback copy: Save the existing file before editing. This gives you a known-good version if a typo affects startup configuration.
- Accurate descriptors: Decide on a short list of tags before editing. The official material does not establish an exhaustive, current vocabulary, so examples such as
EU,EuropeandHightowershould be treated as descriptive examples rather than a canonical list.
How to change TF2 server tags
- Open the server configuration directory. Locate the Team Fortress 2 installation’s
tf/cfgdirectory and openserver.cfg. On a managed container, a documented example path is/home/container/tf/cfg/server.cfg; your provider may use a different filesystem root. The important part is that the file belongs to this server’stf/cfgdirectory. - Find an existing
sv_tagsline. If the file already containssv_tags, edit that line rather than creating competing definitions. If it is absent, add a new line. Keep the setting in the server configuration file, not in a client-side configuration. - Enter one quoted value. For example:
sv_tags="EU,Europe,Hightower"
Use one quoted string and separate descriptors with commas. Steamworks describes gametags as usually comma- or semicolon-separated; comma separation is the clearest choice for a normalserver.cfgentry. - Save the file. Confirm that the editor saved the actual
server.cfgused by the running instance. A panel can show several files or installations, so check the server’s startup layout if you are unsure. - Restart the dedicated server. Stop and start it, or use the panel’s restart control. A restart causes the startup configuration to be read again; merely saving the file does not guarantee that the running process has loaded the new value.
- Verify from the console. After the server is running, execute
status. Valve’s June 11, 2015 Team Fortress 2 update specifically addedsv_tagsto dedicated-serverstatusoutput. Inspect that field to see the value the process is advertising.
Correct sv_tags syntax
The safest format is a single assignment with a quoted, non-empty string:

Do not leave an explicitly assigned value empty, such as sv_tags="". Steamworks states that SetGameTags rejects a null or empty string. If you do not want to advertise custom tags, removing the line is different from supplying an empty value; test the resulting configuration with status.

Keep punctuation simple. Avoid nested quotation marks, unnecessary spaces, line breaks inside the value, or multiple sv_tags assignments that make it unclear which value should win. A short comma-separated list is easier for players to search and easier for you to audit.

Choosing useful tags
Describe stable server characteristics
Good tags answer questions a player can use before connecting: where the server is located, which map or map family it focuses on, or what persistent ruleset it runs. If the server rotates maps or changes rules frequently, avoid a tag that becomes misleading after every rotation.
Use truthful, recognizable wording
The official sources do not define a complete, current list of accepted TF2 tags. Treat your labels as search descriptors, not as a guaranteed controlled vocabulary. A player searching for a particular spelling may not find a differently spelled synonym, so use concise wording your audience is likely to recognize.
Do not use tags as advertisements or commands
sv_tags is metadata. It is not a place for console commands, passwords, URLs, long descriptions or formatting markup. Keep the value short and descriptive so browser filters can use it reliably.

How to verify the value after a restart
- Open the dedicated-server console after the restart has completed.
- Run
statusexactly as shown, without a client command prefix. - Find the
sv_tagsfield in the output. - Compare the displayed value character-for-character with the line in
server.cfg. - If the old value appears, stop troubleshooting the browser first: the running process has not loaded the edit, or the wrong configuration file was changed.
- If the expected value appears in
statusbut a browser search does not find the server, check the browser’s selected filters and the exact spelling of the search term. Tags improve filtering; they do not guarantee a particular ranking or placement.
The status check is important because it distinguishes a configuration problem from a discovery problem. It also shows the final value after any server-side behavior has been applied.
Why the displayed tags may differ from your line
Automatic bot tagging
Valve’s February 3, 2010 Team Fortress 2 update notes say that bots is added to sv_tags when a server is running bots. Consequently, a server configured with custom descriptors can show an additional bots tag while bots are active. Verify the result with status instead of assuming the file’s line is the complete advertised value.
Historical convar behavior
Valve’s March 6, 2008 update notes say sv_alltalk was removed from the convars that affect custom server tags. This is a reminder that automatic tag rules have changed over time. Do not infer current automatic behavior from old guides or from a convar that once affected tags; rely on the value reported by the current server.

Troubleshooting tags that do not appear
The file was edited, but status shows the old value
- Confirm that you edited the running server’s
tf/cfg/server.cfg, not a similarly named file in another installation. - Check that the line begins with
sv_tags=and contains one quoted value. - Look for a second
sv_tagsline elsewhere in the file that could override or confuse the intended setting. - Restart the server after saving. A file editor changing on-disk text does not reload an already running process.
- Re-run
statusonly after the restart has completed.
The field is empty or the server rejects the setting
Replace an empty assignment with a non-empty quoted string, or remove the custom line if you do not need tags. Steamworks documents that a null or empty gametag string is rejected. Check for unmatched quotation marks and accidental line breaks inside the value.
The value is present, but players cannot find the server with a tag filter
- Read the exact spelling and punctuation from
status; search for that wording rather than an assumed synonym. - Remove accidental spaces or decorative text and test with a short, distinctive descriptor.
- Check that the browser is filtering community servers and that no other filters exclude the server.
- Remember that tags are optional discovery metadata, not a guarantee that a server will appear for every search or occupy a particular position.
A bots tag appears unexpectedly
Check whether the server is currently running bots. Valve documented that behavior in the February 3, 2010 update notes. If bots are active, their automatic tag may be part of the final value even though it is not written in your custom line.
A hosting panel cannot find the file
Panels can expose a different root directory from a self-hosted installation. Use the panel’s file manager and startup information to identify the server’s own tf/cfg/server.cfg. One documented container layout places it at /home/container/tf/cfg/server.cfg, but that path is an example, not a universal location.

Managed hosting versus self-hosting for tag changes
The tag syntax is the same in both arrangements. The practical difference is how you reach the file, restart the process and inspect the console.

If you manage several servers, apply the edit to each instance’s own tf/cfg/server.cfg and verify each one separately with its own console. Changing one installation does not change another server that happens to use the same game.
A repeatable maintenance checklist
- Record the current
sv_tagsline before changing it. - Use one quoted, comma-separated value with short, truthful descriptors.
- Keep the list limited to tags that remain accurate for the server’s normal operation.
- Save the exact
tf/cfg/server.cfgused by the running instance. - Restart the dedicated server after every configuration change.
- Run
statusand confirm the finalsv_tagsvalue. - Account for automatic behavior, including Valve’s documented
botstag when bots are running. - When browser searches fail, distinguish a wrong advertised value from a filter or discovery issue.
Key points to remember
The setting you need is sv_tags, located in the server’s tf/cfg/server.cfg. Put the descriptors in one quoted, comma-separated string, save the file and restart the server. Use status to see what the dedicated server is actually advertising. Tags can make filtering and discovery easier, but they are optional for community-list placement, and automatic behavior can alter the final value.
