To change the quality of a 24/7 YouTube stream, adjust the outgoing resolution, frame rate and bitrate in the encoder or streaming service that sends the video to YouTube. YouTube then transcodes that incoming feed into formats viewers can use on different devices and connections. This is different from changing the quality setting in a viewer’s YouTube player, which affects only that viewer’s playback.
For a continuous stream, confirm how your encoder or cloud service applies a settings change before editing a live broadcast. YouTube’s guidance does not promise that every encoder can switch quality without interrupting the stream.
What “stream quality” means
Broadcaster quality: the settings you control
The broadcaster’s quality is determined by the video feed sent to YouTube. Its resolution, frame rate, bitrate and codec are set in the encoder or streaming service. For a 24/7 stream, change those settings at the source that is actually sending the feed; changing them in YouTube’s playback menu will not alter the encoder output.
Viewer quality: a playback choice
YouTube automatically transcodes a live feed into multiple output formats. A viewer can select an available playback quality in the player, but that selection does not change the source stream for other viewers. YouTube describes its transcoding in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Change quality safely on a continuous stream
- Open the live stream in YouTube Studio. Go to Go Live and select the relevant stream in Live Control Room. Check whether it uses automatic resolution detection or a custom stream key configured for manual resolution selection. See Manage live stream settings.
- Choose the target resolution and frame rate in the encoder. Match the setting to the source material and the amount of motion. Higher resolution or frame rate can require more bitrate and upload capacity; do not raise them simply because the controls allow it.
- Set the bitrate for the codec and mode. Use YouTube’s recommendation for the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate. Keep the total stream bitrate within reliable upload capacity, leaving the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. If primary and backup encoders transmit at the same time, count both against available upload bandwidth. The current guidance is in YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.
- Test before relying on the change. Use audio and motion similar to the real program. Preview in Live Control Room, check stream health and audio/video quality, and test failover if the setup has a backup encoder. For a continuous channel, test on an unlisted or test stream, or schedule a controlled transition if the service requires a restart.
- Monitor after the change. Watch for encoder warnings, dropped frames, unstable upload and playback complaints. If the encoder or service does not support an in-place settings change, follow its documented restart or failover procedure rather than assuming the stream will switch cleanly.
YouTube’s documentation covers configuration, testing and monitoring but does not establish a universal hot-switch procedure for every encoder or cloud service. Check the provider’s own controls and test its behavior before changing a stream that must remain continuous.
Bitrate examples from YouTube’s guidance
The figures below are YouTube-published recommended encoder bitrates, not guarantees of uninterrupted operation. YouTube’s pages do not state a publication date; consult the linked table for minimum rates and additional modes before configuring a different resolution or frame rate.

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
| Output mode | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These recommendations are codec-specific. A bitrate that is appropriate for one codec should not be copied blindly to another, and a higher target is not useful if the upload connection cannot sustain it with headroom.
Encoder settings that affect reliability
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS streaming and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission.
- Codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported options in its encoder guidance. Confirm the chosen encoder and workflow support the codec you select.
- Bitrate mode: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Latency: Latency is not the same as resolution or bitrate. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering; review the latency choice separately in Manage live stream settings.
Special case: HDR live streaming
If the stream is HDR, YouTube currently requires H.265/HEVC for HDR live streaming. Playback depends on the viewer’s device: devices that do not support HDR receive SDR playback. YouTube also notes that Live Control Room’s preview will not display HDR colors. Follow the dedicated HDR streaming configuration guidance rather than treating HDR as an ordinary resolution change.

Common quality-change problems
The stream looks no sharper after raising encoder resolution
Check that the encoder is actually sending the intended resolution and that the stream key or Live Control Room configuration is not using automatic detection in a way that differs from your expectation. Remember that YouTube transcodes the incoming feed and viewers may have selected a lower playback quality.
Dropped frames or unstable stream health
The bitrate may exceed sustainable upload capacity, or the connection may lack sufficient headroom. Reduce the outgoing bitrate or resolution, review the available upload bandwidth, and account for any simultaneously transmitting backup stream. YouTube recommends 20% room beyond the stream bitrate.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Changing settings disconnects the stream
Do not assume the encoder supports changing resolution or bitrate without interruption. Check the service’s instructions, test the operation on an unlisted stream, or schedule a controlled transition with its documented failover method.
Backup does not take over as expected
Test the failover path rather than relying on its configuration alone. Confirm that the player rolls over to the backup encoder and that the combined upload load is sustainable while both encoders are transmitting.

HDR preview colors look wrong
Live Control Room does not show HDR colors in its preview. Check the HDR output and playback on a compatible device, keeping in mind that unsupported devices receive SDR.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your 24/7 channel plays uploaded recordings rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo can keep those videos running on YouTube from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free day.
