Compare the measured power draw of your home setup while it is encoding the intended stream with a current cloud quote for an equivalent workload running 24/7. Include electricity, cloud compute and any applicable storage or network charges, plus the value of setup, maintenance and recovery from interruptions. Without your electricity rate, measured wattage and a workload-matched cloud price, a responsible break-even figure cannot be stated.
What counts as a fair comparison?
Compare recurring monthly costs for the same runtime, output quality and reliability needs. A PC purchase is an upfront cost; cloud hourly rates accrue continuously. If you already own a suitable PC, its purchase price is not an incremental cost of keeping this stream running, though power use, wear, cooling or backup power may still matter.
Keep the cloud architecture in scope. A virtual machine running OBS and sending a feed to YouTube is not the same product as a managed live-video system that also packages and distributes video to viewers. AWS’s deployment guidance describes a managed architecture, and its cost FAQ discusses scenario-specific estimates; neither should be treated as a current price for a basic OBS virtual machine. AWS notes estimates depend on assumptions and may be higher than actual costs. AWS deployment guide · AWS live-streaming cost FAQ
Calculate your home power cost
- Measure the actual setup. Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor to measure the computer and relevant equipment while OBS is encoding the scene and stream you intend to run. Measure under representative load rather than relying on a PC’s rated power supply capacity.
- Convert watts to monthly energy. Monthly kWh = average measured watts × 24 × days in the billing period ÷ 1,000.
- Apply your marginal electricity rate. Multiply that monthly kWh figure by the rate that applies to the additional consumption where you live. Use your own tariff and billing conditions, not a national average.
- Add only relevant incremental costs. Consider cooling, hardware wear, backup power or a change to your internet plan if keeping the stream online causes them. Do not count an existing computer’s purchase price as though you were buying it again.
OBS supports hardware encoding, which can shift encoding work from the CPU to a GPU encoding component. That alone does not prove that a particular PC will use less electricity: measure your own complete setup. OBS: Hardware Encoding

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Build a comparable cloud estimate
Get a quote for the right region and the full number of hours you expect to run the stream. Identify exactly what the quote covers and whether it is recurring or depends on a commitment.
- Compute or media processing: confirm the instance or encoder can handle your intended OBS workload and output settings.
- Storage: include it when the service stores recordings, source files or other media as part of your workflow.
- Outbound traffic: check whether charges apply to the feed or other data transfer in that service design.
- Discounts and commitments: distinguish on-demand pricing from a reserved or discounted term, and compare terms you would actually accept.
- Operations: account for setup, updates, remote access, monitoring and what happens when an encoder or connection fails.
YouTube says creators should choose encoder settings that work reliably with their connection, recommends RTMPS, and transcodes incoming live streams into formats for viewers. You still need an encoder to send the stream. A cloud quote should therefore cover the source encoding and delivery path you plan to use, not just a headline compute rate. Compare the trade-offs that affect the decision
| Factor | OBS at home | Cloud option |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | Measured monthly kWh × your applicable additional-use electricity rate, plus relevant incremental costs. | Quote for continuous runtime and the specific VM, managed encoder or full streaming architecture; include applicable compute, storage and traffic. |
| Encoding and setup | You configure OBS and provide a capable computer, internet connection and encoder settings. | Confirm the chosen service can run the required encoding workload; setup and controls vary by service. |
| Connection and recovery | Depends on your home power and upload connection, plus how you monitor and restart the stream. | Depends on the service and its recovery controls; verify what it does after a failed connection or dropped YouTube stream. |
| Maintenance and access | Your computer must remain available and be maintained; remote access may be needed to diagnose problems. | Can avoid relying on a home PC, but still requires service configuration and whatever monitoring or maintenance that service entails. |
| Scope | OBS sends your encoded stream to YouTube. | A cloud encoder sending to YouTube differs from a managed architecture that also packages and distributes video to viewers. |
For prerecorded continuous streams, YouTube’s encoder list includes Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. Treat it, AWS Elemental MediaLive and other cloud options as services to investigate, not as established cheapest choices; compare their current plans and controls against your actual workflow. When each approach may make sense
Home OBS may be attractive when
- You already have a suitable PC and a stable connection.
- Your measured electricity cost is lower than a like-for-like cloud quote.
- You are comfortable maintaining the computer and handling interruptions yourself.
A cloud service may be attractive when
- You do not want a home computer or connection to be responsible for continuous operation.
- The service’s actual recurring quote is acceptable for your required quality and runtime.
- Its recovery, remote controls and support match your operational needs.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live continuously: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
