To change the camera view in GTA 5, press V on PC, the Touchpad on PS4 or PS5, or the Select button on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. Each input switches between first- and third-person perspective. Rockstar lists first-person perspective for these platforms; its support article does not list PS3 or Xbox 360.

Use different views on foot and in vehicles
You can set GTA 5 to use one perspective while walking and another while driving. Go to Settings > Display and turn Allow Independent Camera Modes on. Rockstar says this supports, for example, first-person controls on foot with third-person view in vehicles, or the reverse preference. See Rockstar’s guide to playing with perspective.
If the camera toggle does not work
- Check the platform and input device. Use the default key or button listed above for your version of the game and controller or keyboard.
- Review your control assignments. On PC, most controls can be remapped. Open the in-game Controls settings to check which input is assigned to changing perspective. Rockstar’s PC controls guide covers remapping.
- Check the relevant settings sections. Rockstar’s settings help identifies Controls, Camera, and Display as separate sections. Check them if the input or camera behavior does not match your setup: Adjusting settings within GTAV.
Which camera view should you use?
First- and third-person are available perspectives, and Independent Camera Modes lets you choose separately for on-foot and vehicle play. Which view feels better for aiming, driving, or seeing your surroundings is a matter of player preference; Rockstar’s cited guides do not establish a universally better view.
