Most supported HyperX RGB keyboards change color through HyperX NGENUITY on Windows. Some models, such as the Alloy MKW100, also offer onboard lighting shortcuts. Because HyperX keyboards do not all use the same controls or software version, identify the exact model before following the steps.
1. Identify your HyperX keyboard
Find the model name on the keyboard’s box, underside label, purchase listing, or original manual. Common models include Alloy Core RGB, Alloy FPS RGB, Alloy Elite RGB, Alloy Elite 2, Alloy Origins, Alloy Origins Core, Alloy Origins 60, Alloy Origins 65, Alloy MKW100, Alloy Rise, Alloy Rise 75, Origins 2 models, and Eve 1800.

Do not assume that every keyboard with “Alloy” in its name uses the same shortcut. RGB hardware may provide only preset effects, a limited color palette, zone lighting, or full per-key customization.

Use this method when your keyboard appears on HyperX’s current or Legacy compatibility list.
#1 Best Overall
- Signature Light Bar and dynamic RGB lighting effects so you can personalize your battle station and bring it to life with 6 preset LED lighting effects
- Durable solid Frame for long lasting durability and stability
- Quiet and Responsive Keys with Anti-Ghosting: Key rollover lets you press keys simultaneously and every keystroke will register and be perfectly executed in the order pressed as quickly as it was input. No lost keystrokes from simultaneous signals
- Spill Resistant to prevent damage from accidental spills
- Dedicated Media Controls so you can conveniently control media
- Open HyperX’s official NGENUITY page.
- Check the compatibility list and install the NGENUITY branch shown for your model. Older keyboards may require NGENUITY Legacy; do not install repeatedly until one version happens to detect the keyboard.
- Use a Windows PC. HyperX currently states that NGENUITY customization is Windows-only.
- Connect the keyboard directly to the computer, preferably using its original data cable. Avoid an unpowered USB hub while configuring it.
- Open NGENUITY and select the keyboard when it appears.
- Open the lighting section. Depending on the model and software release, it may be labelled Lighting, RGB, or something similar.
- Choose Solid for one constant color. Choose Breathing, Wave, Color Cycle, or another effect for animated lighting. Select Custom or per-key lighting only if your model supports it.
- Choose a color with the color picker or RGB controls.
- Apply or save the profile.
- If the keyboard has onboard memory, save or switch the profile onto the keyboard. This is what allows the lighting to remain available after NGENUITY closes or when the keyboard is connected to another compatible system.
The exact interface and available effects vary by model and NGENUITY version, so the labels above are a guide rather than a universal click path. For example, the Alloy Origins manual confirms NGENUITY-based lighting customization and onboard profiles but does not define one shortcut that applies to every HyperX keyboard.
3. Change the color without software
Physical lighting controls differ substantially between models. Use the exact manual for your keyboard rather than assuming a universal Fn combination.
Alloy MKW100 example
The Alloy MKW100 manual documents six onboard lighting effects:
- RGB Wave
- Color Loading
- Solid
- Breathing
- Color Cycle
- Custom
To set one static color, use the keyboard’s LED-mode control to select Solid, then use the LED-color control to cycle through the five supported colors. The manual also lists five brightness levels. If changing the color appears to do nothing, select an effect that supports color selection first; some animated effects control the colors automatically.

4. Model-specific guidance
| Model family | Likely method | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Alloy Rise, Origins 2, Eve 1800 | Current NGENUITY | Verify the live compatibility list before installing. |
| Alloy Origins, Origins Core, Origins 60, Origins 65 | NGENUITY Legacy according to HyperX’s current list | The newer application may not detect every older device. |
| Alloy Elite RGB, Alloy FPS RGB, Alloy Elite 2 | NGENUITY Legacy according to HyperX’s list | Use the model manual for hardware controls, profiles, and reset behavior. |
| Alloy MKW100 | Onboard controls and Legacy-listed software support | Physical controls provide effects, colors, and brightness options. |
| Alloy Core RGB | Check the exact manual | Do not assume NGENUITY or per-key RGB support without model-specific confirmation. |
HyperX’s compatibility page currently lists both newer devices and Legacy products, and its labels can overlap or change over time. Treat the model-specific list on the official page as the authority at the time you configure the keyboard.
5. Fix color changes that do not work
- Check the model first. Confirm that the keyboard is actually listed as compatible.
- Use the correct branch. A Legacy keyboard may not appear in the current NGENUITY application.
- Close competing RGB software. Multiple lighting applications can fight for control. HyperX advises using only one RGB-control application when NGENUITY is used with OMEN Gaming Hub.
- Reconnect directly. Try another USB port and, if possible, the original cable. Avoid an unpowered hub.
- Restart the software. Close NGENUITY, reconnect the keyboard, and open the application again.
- Install firmware only from HyperX. Use an applicable update from an official HyperX source, not an unverified download.
- Check the selected effect. Wave, Color Cycle, and other animated modes may override a static color choice. Select Solid before testing.
- Save to onboard memory. A profile saved only inside the application may not persist after NGENUITY closes or the keyboard changes computers.
- Use onboard controls if available. This is often the best fallback for keyboards with preset lighting controls.
- Factory-reset only as a last resort. Manuals for models such as the Alloy FPS RGB and Alloy Elite RGB warn that resetting removes the custom LED profile. A reset restores defaults; it is not a harmless first troubleshooting step.
6. Mac, Linux, and console support
HyperX currently says NGENUITY customization requires Windows; it does not provide the same customization application for macOS or Linux. Mac and Linux users can use onboard shortcuts where their model provides them, or configure the keyboard once on a Windows PC and save the profile to onboard memory.

7. Important limitations to understand
- Solid usually means one color across the supported lighting area. It does not automatically mean every key can have a different color.
- RGB does not always mean unrestricted RGB. Some keyboards provide presets, zones, or a fixed selection of colors.
- Brightness is separate from color. Raising brightness will not change the selected hue.
- Wireless behavior may differ. Wired and wireless modes can expose different features, so check the exact manual.
- Persistence depends on memory. A setting remains available elsewhere only when the keyboard stores the profile, if that model supports onboard storage.
8. When a replacement makes sense
Do not replace the keyboard merely because a shortcut is difficult to find. First confirm the model, read its manual, and try the correct NGENUITY branch.
A replacement is reasonable when the existing keyboard is not compatible with the required software, lacks per-key or broader RGB control, or cannot store profiles on the keyboard. HyperX’s current compatible lineup includes products such as the Alloy Rise, Alloy Rise 75, Origins 2 1800, and Eve 1800. Layout, switch type, memory features, regional availability, stock, and promotional pricing vary, so compare the specifications rather than buying solely for RGB.
For example, a 75% Alloy Rise 75 may suit someone who wants a compact layout but not someone who needs a full number pad. The Eve 1800 is a membrane keyboard, while a reader seeking mechanical switches should compare other models carefully. Prices and discounts on HyperX’s collection page are promotional and regional and should be checked again before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make every key a different color?
Only if the exact keyboard and its NGENUITY branch support per-key lighting. RGB backlighting alone does not guarantee individual-key control.

Why is my HyperX keyboard not appearing in NGENUITY?
Check the model-specific compatibility list, install the correct current or Legacy branch, close competing RGB software, connect directly by USB, try another port or cable, and restart NGENUITY.
Can I change the color without installing software?
Some models provide onboard controls. The Alloy MKW100, for example, can select Solid, cycle supported colors, and adjust brightness from its keyboard controls. Other models require NGENUITY.
Why does my keyboard keep cycling colors?
It is probably using Wave, Color Cycle, or another animated effect. Select Solid if you want one static color.
Will the color stay after I close NGENUITY?
It can, if the keyboard supports onboard memory and you save the profile to the keyboard. A profile stored only in the application may not persist elsewhere.

Can I use HyperX NGENUITY on Mac?
HyperX currently states that NGENUITY customization is Windows-only. Configure the keyboard on Windows and save an onboard profile when supported.
How do I reset the lighting?
Use the exact model manual’s reset procedure as a last resort. Factory reset can erase custom LED profiles, so save or record your settings first when possible.
The Bottom Line
Identify the model, check HyperX’s current-versus-Legacy compatibility list, and use NGENUITY on Windows for supported RGB keyboards. If your keyboard has onboard controls, select Solid before choosing a color. When software detection fails, verify the branch and connection before resetting—because a reset may delete your saved lighting profile.
