Windows: For a temporary change, open Task Manager, find RustDedicated.exe on the Details tab, choose Set priority, and select High or Above normal. For a setting that returns automatically after every restart, launch the server from a batch file with start "" /HIGH /WAIT (or /ABOVENORMAL). Linux: raise the priority of a running process with sudo renice -5 -p <PID>, or start it with sudo nice -n -5.

CPU priority is an operating-system scheduling hint, not a Rust performance switch. It can help when the server is competing with other busy processes, but available evidence is anecdotal and there is no published percentage improvement to expect. Rust server performance still depends heavily on fast single-core CPU performance, so priority changes should be tested rather than assumed to be a cure for lag.

What changing CPU priority actually does
Windows and Linux assign scheduling information to every process. That information helps the operating system decide which runnable process receives CPU time when several processes want it at once. Raising the priority of a Rust server tells the scheduler to favor the server over lower-priority work.
This does not add CPU capacity, make a processor clock faster, or repair a server that is overloaded by world simulation, plugins, network limits, storage delays, or insufficient hardware. A high-priority process can also take time away from the operating system, remote-administration tools, monitoring, backups, voice chat, and other game servers on the same machine.

Windows: change Rust server priority for one session
Use Task Manager
- Start the Rust server normally and wait until
RustDedicated.exeis running. - Open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details.
- Open the Details tab, where individual processes are listed.
- Locate
RustDedicated.exe. If more than one Rust server is running, use the process that matches the server you intend to change. - Right-click the process and choose Set priority.
- Choose Above normal or High, then confirm the warning.
The change applies to the current process. It normally disappears when that process exits, so a scheduled restart or crash will return the server to its normal priority unless the launch method sets it again.

| Level | What it means for a Rust server | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Below normal | De-emphasizes the process when CPU demand is contested. | Useful only when deliberately giving other workloads preference. |
| Normal | The default scheduling class for ordinary processes. | Use this as the rollback point when priority does not help. |
| Above normal | Favors the server over normal-priority work without using the most aggressive standard class. | A cautious first test on a shared machine. |
| High | Marks the process as time-critical relative to normal work. | Can improve CPU access under contention, but Windows warns that a High-class application can consume nearly all available processor time. |
| Realtime | The most aggressive class offered by the command-line interface. | Do not use for a production Rust server as a routine fix. It requires the SeIncreaseBasePriorityPrivilege privilege, and starving system tasks can make the machine difficult to administer. |
Windows documentation lists the priority switches as low, belownormal, normal, abovenormal, high, and realtime. The safest progression is Normal → Above normal → High, checking behavior at each step instead of jumping to Realtime.
Windows: make the setting survive restarts
Use a launch batch file
The Windows start command can assign a priority class when it creates the server process. Put the command in the same batch file you already use to launch or restart the server:
start "" /HIGH /WAIT "C:RustServerRustDedicated.exe"
Replace the executable path with the real location, then append your existing Rust server arguments after the quoted executable path. The empty quoted string after start is the window-title argument; it prevents a quoted executable path from being misread as the title.

/WAIT keeps the batch file waiting for the server process. That matters when the rest of your script is a restart loop: the loop can wait for Rust to exit, then launch a new instance with the same priority. If your existing script already has a restart loop, change only the launch line and preserve its tested stop and delay logic.
Use Above normal when High is too disruptive
For a machine that also hosts administration tools, databases, backups, or another game server, use:
start "" /ABOVENORMAL /WAIT "C:RustServerRustDedicated.exe"
A community-maintained batch example uses /HIGH; another community discussion suggests /AboveNormal as a less aggressive choice. That discussion is several years old, so verify the spelling and behavior on the Windows build you actually run. The documented command-line reference and start /? on the target machine are the final syntax checks.
Confirm that the batch file is doing what you expect
- Stop any manually launched Rust server instance so you do not inspect the wrong process.
- Run the batch file once.
- In Task Manager, open Details, right-click
RustDedicated.exe, and check Set priority. - Confirm that the selected class is High or Above normal.
- Stop and restart the server through the same batch file and check again. This verifies persistence rather than a one-time manual setting.
Windows: optionally set processor affinity
The same start command supports /AFFINITY followed by a hexadecimal mask. The mask selects logical processors on which the new process may run. For example, a community batch file uses:
start "" /WAIT /HIGH /AFFINITY FE "C:RustServerRustDedicated.exe"
Use affinity only when you have a specific reason to reserve or isolate cores. A mask that excludes a busy or fast core can reduce performance, and a mask that leaves too little CPU for the server can make lag worse. Processor numbering, simultaneous multithreading, other services, and the machine’s total logical-processor count all matter. Test one change at a time and remove /AFFINITY if the result is worse.

Priority and affinity solve different problems. Priority affects how strongly the scheduler favors the process when it can run; affinity restricts where it can run. Combining both makes troubleshooting harder because a result cannot be attributed to one setting. Establish a baseline with priority alone before adding an affinity mask.
Linux: raise the priority of a running Rust server
Find the server process
Identify the process ID (PID) for the Rust server instance you want to change. Use your process monitor or the service’s existing status output, especially if several server instances run under the same account. Do not apply the command to a shell, wrapper, monitoring process, or a different Rust instance.
Apply a higher priority with renice
Run:
sudo renice -5 -p <PID>
renice changes the scheduling priority of an already-running process. The negative value requests a higher priority than the usual zero nice value. Increasing priority requires root privileges, which is why the command uses sudo. Replace <PID> with the numeric PID you identified.
After the command reports the changed value, watch the server under the same workload that exposed the problem. If the server is unaffected, or if other services become unresponsive, return the process to its previous value rather than leaving the change in place. A restart normally discards a manual renice change unless the launch mechanism applies it again.

sudo nice -n -5 /path/to/RustDedicated
Append the Rust server’s existing arguments after the executable path. If a wrapper script starts the server, apply the priority to the actual Rust process rather than only to an unrelated shell. The process inherits the scheduling value established at launch, so a restart through the same command repeats the setting.
Linux distributions, service managers, and permissions differ. If a service account is not allowed to request a negative nice value, the command will fail or retain the old value; do not work around that by granting broad privileges without understanding the security impact. The essential distinction is that renice changes an existing PID, while nice sets the value for a newly created process.
How to test whether priority helped
Because there is no published Rust-specific performance percentage, use a repeatable before-and-after comparison:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Record the server’s normal workload: approximate player count, active plugins or mods, map activity, and other heavy processes on the host.
- Run at the default Normal priority for long enough to observe the issue. Note CPU utilization, server-side timing warnings, disconnects, and player-reported stutter.
- Change only the priority to Above normal or a negative nice value. Keep the workload and server configuration unchanged.
- Observe the same indicators for a comparable period.
- Check the host as a whole. A smoother server is not an improvement if remote access, backups, or another service becomes starved.
- Repeat after a restart to confirm that the persistent launch method, not a leftover manual setting, produced the result.
Do not treat a short quiet period as proof. Rust workloads vary with player movement, building, entities, plugins, and map activity. If the problem appears only during a particular event, reproduce that event before deciding.

The priority returns to Normal
Task Manager changes are session-only. Move the setting into the Windows batch launch command or the Linux command that starts the process. Then verify the priority after a complete stop and restart.

Windows refuses Realtime
Realtime requires the SeIncreaseBasePriorityPrivilege privilege. Without it, the highest class a caller can set is High. Do not grant powerful rights merely to force Realtime; High is already aggressive and is the practical ceiling for most server operators.
The server becomes less responsive after raising priority
High priority can consume nearly all available processor time. Lower the server to Above normal or Normal, remove any affinity mask, and ensure that administration and operating-system tasks can run. On Linux, restore the prior nice value with renice rather than leaving a negative value in place.

There is no measurable improvement
That result is normal. Priority matters only when CPU scheduling contention is part of the bottleneck. If the Rust process already has adequate CPU access, changing its class will not increase single-core speed or remove another limit. Return to Normal and investigate the actual workload, hardware, server configuration, or network path.
The wrong process was changed
Multiple Rust instances, wrapper scripts, and crash-restart helpers can appear similar in a process list. Match the PID or executable path to the intended server, then recheck the priority on the process that owns the live server workload.
Priority versus hardware: what to fix first
Priority is most plausibly useful when several demanding processes share a host and the Rust server is being delayed. It is a poor substitute for an undersized or unsuitable CPU. A 2026 hosting guide describes Rust as relying heavily on single-core performance and recommends clock speed over simply adding more cores; that is secondary guidance rather than a Rust benchmark, but it explains why a priority change cannot compensate for weak per-core performance.
- If one logical core is saturated by the Rust process itself, raising priority cannot make that core execute more instructions per second.
- If another workload repeatedly occupies the CPU, Above normal or High may give the server more scheduling opportunities, at the cost of that workload.
- If storage, memory pressure, network latency, or a plugin is the bottleneck, CPU priority is aimed at the wrong resource.
- If several game servers share the host, compare their scheduling classes and CPU usage before favoring one server.
A conservative decision checklist
- Start at the default Normal priority and establish a workload-specific baseline.
- On Windows, test Above normal first; on Linux, test the requested negative nice value only when you have root access and a clear contention problem.
- Use High only after confirming that the host remains manageable.
- Avoid Realtime for routine Rust hosting.
- Do not add affinity until priority alone has been measured.
- Put the chosen setting in the real launch command if it must survive restarts.
- Keep a rollback command or an unchanged copy of the original batch/service launch line.
- Revert the change when it does not improve the same, repeatable workload.
Bottom line for a Rust server
For a one-off Windows test, use Task Manager and set RustDedicated.exe to Above normal or High. For persistence, launch it with start "" /HIGH /WAIT or the less aggressive /ABOVENORMAL, optionally adding a carefully tested hexadecimal /AFFINITY mask. On Linux, use sudo renice -5 -p <PID> for a running process or start it with sudo nice -n -5. Measure the result under a repeatable workload, because priority is only a scheduling hint and current evidence does not establish a guaranteed performance gain.
