This value controls the real-time length of one complete day-and-night cycle; it does not alter the in-game clock. Daylight hours are controlled separately by DayStartHour, DayStartMinute, DayEndHour, and DayEndMinute. Because hosting providers place these settings in different files, first identify the file your server actually loads.

What the day-length setting actually changes
V Rising separates the speed of the full cycle from the hours assigned to daytime. DayDurationInSeconds, inside the GameTimeModifiers section, determines how many real-world seconds pass during one complete in-game day followed by night. A larger number makes the cycle slower. A smaller number makes sunrise and sunset arrive more quickly.

The setting does not make the clock start at a different hour, and it does not by itself make daylight occupy more or less of the 24-hour clock. Those boundaries are separate values:
| Setting | Purpose |
|---|---|
DayDurationInSeconds |
Real-time duration of one complete day-and-night cycle. |
DayStartHour |
Hour on the in-game 24-hour clock when daytime begins. |
DayStartMinute |
Minute within the start hour when daytime begins. |
DayEndHour |
Hour on the in-game clock when daytime ends. |
DayEndMinute |
Minute within the end hour when daytime ends. |
For example, changing only DayDurationInSeconds can make the entire cycle last longer while preserving the same daylight and darkness portions of the clock. Changing the start or end values changes when the sun is up within that cycle; it is a different adjustment.

Before you edit the server
Stop the server first
Shut the server down cleanly before opening its settings. An active process may overwrite your edit when it saves its current configuration, and players connected during the change can remain on the old timing until the next restart.
Make a backup
Download or copy the complete settings file before changing a value. Keep the original under a clearly different name outside the server’s active settings folder. A backup lets you restore the previous configuration if the JSON becomes invalid or the host applies a different preset than the one you edited.
Use a private test instance when possible
The available documentation for this option comes mainly from hosting guides and community posts rather than an official Stunlock Studios reference. Test the change on a private server first, especially when using a control panel that generates or replaces configuration files.
Record the current values
Write down the existing DayDurationInSeconds, start, and end values before editing. This gives you a precise rollback point and makes it easier to tell whether a host panel or preset has changed the file after a restart.
Find the settings file your host uses
There is no single path that can safely be presented as universal. Different hosting instructions identify different files, and the correct location depends on the server package and the host’s configuration system.

| Location or file named by guides | How to treat it |
|---|---|
ServerGameSettings.json |
A commonly identified server settings file. Confirm that your installation loads this file before editing. |
/VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings |
A directory cited by another hosting guide. Look for the active settings file inside the server’s corresponding directory structure. |
Custom.json under GameSettingPresets |
A preset-based arrangement described by another provider. The active server may read this preset rather than a standalone settings file. |
Use your host’s file manager, SFTP instructions, or configuration documentation to determine which file is active. If the panel has a field for a settings or preset path, use that path instead of assuming that a similarly named file is authoritative. When several copies exist, change one file at a time and verify the result after restarting; editing every copy can make it impossible to identify which one the server reads.
Recommended Free Tools
Step-by-step: change DayDurationInSeconds
- Stop the V Rising server. Use the host panel’s Stop control or stop the dedicated-server process on your own machine. Wait until the status shows that it is offline.
- Open the active settings file. Locate the file identified by your host, such as
ServerGameSettings.jsonor the activeCustom.jsonpreset. Do not edit a downloaded backup or an unused example file. - Search for
GameTimeModifiers. The day-length key belongs inside this section. Use the editor’s search function rather than scrolling through a large JSON file. - Find
DayDurationInSeconds. Replace only its numeric value. Keep the key spelling, capitalization, quotation marks, commas, and braces intact. - Enter the duration in seconds. For instance,
1440represents 24 real-world minutes; it is not a 24-hour clock setting. - Save the file as valid JSON. Do not add comments, trailing commas, or units such as “seconds” inside the value. If the panel offers a Save or Apply button, use it after the file editor reports success.
- Start or restart the server. A restart is required for the server to load the new setting. Wait for the server to finish starting before joining.
- Verify in game. Note the in-game time, wait through a visible transition such as sunset, and compare the elapsed real time with the value you entered. Test with a second player if the server is multiplayer.
Safe JSON editing pattern
Your file will contain other keys, so preserve them. The relevant structure should place the numeric key within GameTimeModifiers. A minimal illustration is:
{
"GameTimeModifiers": {
"DayDurationInSeconds": 1440
}
}
This is an illustration of the nesting, not a replacement for your complete settings file. Keep any existing keys in the section and match the formatting already used by the file. If DayDurationInSeconds is already present, edit that entry instead of adding a duplicate. Duplicate keys can be handled inconsistently by parsers and make troubleshooting harder.
Choosing a value
The following figures come from non-official hosting material. Treat the reported default as a reference rather than a guaranteed value for every game version or host.
| Seconds entered | Real-time equivalent | Evidence or use |
|---|---|---|
60 |
1 minute | Lower limit reported by ServerBlend; extremely fast for a normal community server. |
1080 |
18 minutes | Default reported by an eXputer guide. That guide was already roughly 911 days old on 14 October 2026, so your current default may differ. |
1440 |
24 minutes | Casual PvE example published by a 2026 low.ms hosting article. |
1800 |
30 minutes | Solo or duo example from the same 2026 hosting article. |
3600 |
60 minutes | A longer-cycle example. A Steam Community post also combined this value with start and end hours set to zero to seek permanent night; that behavior is anecdotal and not an official guarantee. |
86400 |
24 hours | Upper limit reported by ServerBlend. Confirm that your server build accepts it before using the maximum. |
ServerBlend’s reported allowed range is 60 to 86,400 seconds. A host, game update, or preset may impose a different validation rule, so treat a rejected value as a configuration constraint rather than forcing it through a panel. If you need a moderate change, begin with a value close to the current setting, test it privately, and adjust in small increments.

Change daylight hours separately
If your goal is more daylight rather than a slower complete cycle, edit the start and end clock values instead of changing the duration. The four keys define the daytime window:
| Goal | Values to change | What remains unchanged |
|---|---|---|
| Make the entire cycle slower or faster | DayDurationInSeconds |
The clock hours at which day starts and ends. |
| Move sunrise earlier or later | DayStartHour and, if needed, DayStartMinute |
The total real-time cycle length. |
| Move sunset earlier or later | DayEndHour and, if needed, DayEndMinute |
The total real-time cycle length. |
| Attempt a night-only schedule | Start/end clock values plus a duration value | Nothing is guaranteed; the zero-hour combination is only a user report. |
Keep the values in the format expected by the existing file. If the configuration already uses separate hour and minute keys, change those keys rather than trying to encode a time such as “22:30” into an hour field.
If your host provides a control panel
Some panels expose individual game settings, while others expose only a raw JSON editor or a preset selector. Whether DayDurationInSeconds appears as a field was not established consistently across hosts.
- Stop the server from the panel.
- Open the game-settings, advanced-settings, or custom-preset area.
- Search the panel for “day duration,” “game time,” or the exact key
DayDurationInSeconds. - If the field exists, enter seconds and save the panel configuration. Check whether the panel displays a minimum or maximum.
- If no field exists, open the panel’s file manager or connect through the documented file-transfer method and edit the active JSON file manually.
- Restart the server and confirm that the panel did not regenerate the old value.
If a panel repeatedly restores the previous number, it may be rebuilding the file from a selected preset. In that case, edit the preset the server actually uses or disable automatic regeneration if the host documents that option. Do not keep overwriting multiple files without checking which one is active.

Confirm the server loaded the file
Restart fully rather than relying on a soft reload. If the host supplies startup logs, look for a configuration or JSON parse error. A parse error can cause the server to fall back to defaults or refuse to start.
Measure a transition
Use a stopwatch to measure a recognizable in-game transition. Because the setting describes a complete cycle, a single daylight interval will not necessarily equal the number of seconds entered. Compare the elapsed time between equivalent points in successive cycles, or use the server’s visible clock and repeat the observation.
Check other settings before diagnosing the duration
If sunrise and sunset occur at unexpected clock hours but the cycle speed is correct, inspect the four start/end keys. If the cycle speed is unchanged, verify that you edited the active file and restarted the server.
Troubleshooting
The server will not start after saving
- Restore the backup and start the server to confirm that the problem is the edit.
- Check for a missing comma, an extra comma, unmatched braces, or quotation marks around a numeric value.
- Remove comments or text labels added to the JSON; standard JSON does not accept them.
- Reapply only the numeric change inside the existing
GameTimeModifiersobject.
The setting saves but has no effect
- Confirm that the server was stopped before the edit and restarted afterward.
- Check for another active file or preset. The paths documented by different providers are not interchangeable on every installation.
- Reopen the file after restarting to see whether the host replaced your value.
- Make sure you changed
DayDurationInSeconds, not one of the similarly named daytime clock keys.
The panel rejects the number
- Check the panel’s stated minimum and maximum.
- Use an integer number of seconds, without commas, decimal points, or a unit suffix.
- If the panel range conflicts with the 60-to-86,400-second range reported by ServerBlend, follow the limit enforced by your current server build and host.
Daylight is still too short or too long
That is a clock-window issue, not necessarily a duration issue. Leave the cycle length alone and review DayStartHour, DayStartMinute, DayEndHour, and DayEndMinute. Changing both sets at once makes it difficult to identify which adjustment produced the result.
The server uses a preset and ignores direct edits
Locate the preset named by the panel, such as a Custom.json file under GameSettingPresets, and change the value there. If the host regenerates presets automatically, its support documentation is the authority for how to persist a custom value.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Practical choices for different servers
Casual PvE
A 1,440-second cycle is a published 2026 example for casual PvE. It gives a 24-minute real-time cycle while retaining whatever daytime clock boundaries are already configured. Treat it as a starting point, not a universal balance recommendation.
Solo or duo play
A 1,800-second cycle is a published example for solo or duo servers. The extra time can make travel, crafting, and outdoor activities less hurried, but the correct value depends on how your group schedules play sessions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fast-reset testing
A value near the lower end of the reported range lets you observe several transitions quickly on a private server. Do not assume that a test value is suitable for a persistent community: rapid cycles can make every time-dependent activity feel compressed.
Long-cycle communities
Values such as 3,600 seconds create a one-hour cycle. Coordinate the change with players because anyone planning around the existing timing will experience a different pace after the restart.
Permanent-night experiments
A Steam Community post describes using 3600 with both DayStartHour and DayEndHour set to 0. This is an anecdotal configuration, not a documented guarantee from Stunlock Studios. Test it on a disposable server and be prepared to restore the previous values if the game interprets the boundaries differently.
Important limitations and version caveats
The reported default of 1,080 seconds comes from an older eXputer guide and may not represent the current default in every 2026 installation. The 60-to-86,400-second range comes from ServerBlend rather than an official specification. Hosting examples of 1,440 and 1,800 seconds come from a 2026 low.ms article and describe example configurations, not required settings.

No official Stunlock Studios documentation confirming the universal file path or current default was identified. File names and locations can therefore vary with server packaging, host automation, and game updates. Keep a backup, test privately, and recheck the active file after updates or migrations.
Quick checklist
- Stop the server.
- Back up the active settings file.
- Confirm which file or preset the host loads.
- Edit
GameTimeModifiers.DayDurationInSeconds. - Enter an integer number of seconds.
- Validate the JSON and save it.
- Restart the server.
- Measure an in-game transition.
- Adjust the start/end clock keys only if the daylight window, rather than cycle speed, is wrong.
Bottom line
To change how long a V Rising day-night cycle lasts, edit DayDurationInSeconds under GameTimeModifiers, save the active settings file, and restart the server. Do not assume that ServerGameSettings.json, /VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings, or GameSettingPresets/Custom.json is universal: verify the path your host actually reads. Use the separate start and end clock settings when you want different daylight hours, and test every change privately because the published path, default, and range information comes from non-official sources.
