RimWorld Together difficulty can be changed in two server-side ways: edit the difficulty JSON in the server’s Core folder, or use the server console command toggledifficulty to temporarily disable custom difficulty, change the Storyteller settings in-game, and send the new settings back to the server. Stop the server before editing files, confirm the filename used by your build, and check that custom-difficulty enforcement is not overriding your changes.
For a hosted setup, Godlike.Host offers a Pterodactyl-based game panel with SFTP/FTP access, up to three free backups a day, and a personal firewall. RimWorld Together’s code is licensed CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, a NonCommercial licence (github.com/RimWorld-Together/Rimworld-Together, 10 Oct 2026).

Which method should you use?
Choose the method that matches how your server is administered. File editing is the most direct route when you have FTP or file-manager access and need repeatable settings. The console workflow is safer for owners who would rather use the game’s Storyteller interface than hand-edit JSON.

Prepare the server before changing anything
- Schedule a short outage. Stop the RimWorld Together server before opening or saving its difficulty file. Editing a live file can be overwritten when the process saves its current state.
- Tell connected players. A difficulty change can alter storyteller behavior and threat intensity for the shared session. Have everyone leave before the restart or configuration change.
- Make a backup. Download the existing difficulty file, or copy its contents to a separate text file. Keep the backup until players have joined successfully and the new settings have been verified.
- Confirm the server build. The documented filename differs between guides and may be version-sensitive. Do not rename a file simply because another guide uses a different name.
- Keep server and clients aligned. A known enforcement issue reports that mismatched versions or enforced settings can push clients back to default storyteller settings.
- Use a plain-text JSON editor. Avoid word processors that add smart quotes or formatting. Preserve braces, commas, quotation marks and the original key spelling.
Route 1: Edit the difficulty configuration file
1. Stop the server
Use your host’s Stop control and wait until the process is fully offline. Do not edit while the server is still starting, saving or accepting connections.

2. Open the server’s Core folder
The official RimWorld Together wiki places the settings in the server’s Core subfolder. Its FTP path is shown as ../rimworld-together/Core. A host control panel may expose the same location through a Files tab instead of FTP.
3. Identify the filename used by your installation
Documentation is inconsistent about the exact filename. The official wiki and some hosting documentation refer to DifficultyValues.json; other host guides refer to DifficultyConfig.json. This is a version or packaging discrepancy, not a reason to create a second file. In the Core folder, look for the existing difficulty JSON and edit that file. If neither name is present, check the folder structure supplied with your server build before proceeding.
| Reference | Filename described | How to use that information |
|---|---|---|
| Official RimWorld Together wiki | DifficultyValues.json |
Use this as the primary reference when it matches your installation. |
| Some hosting control-panel guides | DifficultyConfig.json |
Use only if that file actually exists in your server’s files. |
4. Edit the custom-difficulty flag
The official key is UseCustomDifficulty. Set it to true when the server should use the custom values in the file. Set it to false when the server should use the default difficulty settings.

Do not put quotation marks around the Boolean value. true and false are JSON values; "true" is text and may not be interpreted as the setting.

5. Review the individual values
The official documentation identifies ThreatScale as the control for threat intensity. Leave the rest of the file’s structure intact unless you understand the additional keys present in your build. A server guide warns that unassigned parameters may default to 0 percent, so do not delete keys or leave newly required parameters without values. Preserve every existing parameter and set an explicit value where the file expects one.
{
"UseCustomDifficulty": true,
"ThreatScale": 1.0
}
The example illustrates JSON formatting only. A universal numeric range or recommended threat value for every RimWorld Together version is not established, so use the range and defaults shown in your own file rather than copying an arbitrary number.
6. Save, restart and test
- Save the file without changing its extension.
- Check that the JSON still has matching braces, commas between properties and double quotes around key names.
- Start the server and wait for it to finish loading.
- Join with a client that matches the server version.
- Open the Storyteller settings and confirm that the intended profile is active.
- Run a short, controlled test before inviting the whole group back. Confirm that the server remains online and that the settings do not revert after a save or restart.
Route 2: Use toggledifficulty and the Storyteller menu
This route avoids direct JSON editing. The official workflow uses the console command to disable custom difficulty, changes the profile through the game’s Storyteller interface, then re-enables custom difficulty and sends the profile to the server.
1. Open the server console
Use the console provided by your server host or administration panel. The command must be entered in the server console, not in ordinary player chat.

2. Disable custom difficulty
toggledifficulty
The command toggles custom difficulty off so the default settings apply. It does not itself select a storyteller preset or assign threat values.
3. Change the profile in-game
- Join the server with an administrator-capable client.
- Open Options.
- Select Gameplay.
- Open Storyteller Settings.
- Choose Modify.
- Select a preset or configure a custom setup.
The available labels can depend on the game and mod build. If the menu does not show the expected controls, verify that you are editing the server-connected profile rather than a local, offline game.
4. Re-enable custom difficulty and send it
Return to the server console and run toggledifficulty again. This restores custom-difficulty mode. In the Storyteller settings interface, click Send Difficulty so the revised profile is transmitted to the server. Without that final action, the settings may remain only in the client interface.

5. Verify after reconnecting
Have a second player reconnect and inspect the storyteller state. If the client is immediately returned to default settings, treat that as an enforcement or compatibility problem rather than assuming the command failed.

When players can change difficulty themselves
Some RimWorld Together setups leave difficulty under each player’s in-game control instead of enforcing one server profile. In that arrangement, a player can use Options → Gameplay → Storyteller Settings → Modify and select a preset or custom configuration. This is different from changing the server’s shared custom-difficulty file.
If the server enforces custom difficulty, player-side changes are not authoritative. The server can overwrite the client’s selection when the player joins or when the server synchronizes its profile. Decide first whether your community wants one shared difficulty or independent player settings, then configure enforcement accordingly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a difficulty change may not take effect
The wrong file was edited
Because documentation uses both DifficultyValues.json and DifficultyConfig.json, editing a newly created file or a similarly named backup may have no effect. Stop the server, inspect the existing files in Core, and edit the file that your build already loads.
Custom difficulty is disabled
If UseCustomDifficulty is false, the server intentionally uses default settings. Set it to true only after the custom values are complete. The console workflow has the same state distinction: the first toggledifficulty call disables custom mode, and the second enables it again.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
A parameter is missing or unassigned
One host guide warns that unassigned parameters may fall back to 0 percent. Compare your edited file with the original and restore any removed keys. Give every parameter expected by your build an explicit value; do not assume omitted values inherit a sensible default.
The JSON is invalid
A missing comma, an extra comma, mismatched brace or smart quotation mark can prevent the file from loading. Restore the backup, then reapply one change at a time with a plain-text editor. Keep the original indentation and key names to make differences easy to spot.
Enforcement is overriding the change
GitHub issue #248, titled “Difficulty Configuration Changes Don’t Bind,” describes a case in which enforced custom difficulty prevented configuration edits from taking effect and pushed clients back to default storyteller settings. Check whether enforcement is enabled, whether you completed Send Difficulty, and whether the server and client are running compatible versions. Test with one client before changing additional values.

The command appears to do nothing
Confirm that toggledifficulty was entered in the server console, not player chat. Check the console output and the Storyteller menu after the command. If the command is not recognized, verify the RimWorld Together build and its administration interface; command availability can be version-sensitive.
The server will not start after editing
Stop trying to repair the file while the process is repeatedly restarting. Restore the backup, start the server, and confirm that it loads. Then make a single, minimal edit and validate the JSON before restarting again. This isolates syntax errors from enforcement or version problems.
A practical verification checklist
- The server was stopped before the file was edited.
- The change was made in the existing difficulty file under
Core. - The filename used by the installation was confirmed rather than guessed.
UseCustomDifficultymatches the desired mode.ThreatScaleand every other expected parameter have explicit values.- No JSON punctuation or quotation marks were altered accidentally.
- The server was restarted after a file change.
- The console workflow used
toggledifficultyin the correct order. - Send Difficulty was clicked after editing the Storyteller profile.
- Server and client versions match.
- A test player confirmed the storyteller state after reconnecting.
How to roll back safely
If players report unexpected threats or the server stops loading, stop the server and restore the backed-up difficulty file. Start it with the previous configuration, verify that clients can connect, and only then investigate the new setting separately. For console-based changes, use the same Storyteller workflow to return to the prior preset, then send it to the server. Keep one known-good copy for each server build you operate.
Recommended decision
Use the file route when you need a precise, repeatable server profile and have reliable access to the Core folder. Use toggledifficulty when you want to edit through the Storyteller interface. In either case, the decisive checks are the custom-difficulty state, the exact filename loaded by your build, complete parameter values, enforcement behavior and server-client version compatibility.
