Change a Vintage Story world’s hunger pace with the server command /worldconfig playerHungerSpeed <multiplier>. Use 1 for the default rate, a value such as 0.5 to make the hunger bar fall more slowly, or a value above 1 to make hunger drain faster. The documented input range is 0 to 10. You must have administrator or server-console permission, type playerHungerSpeed with exactly that capitalization, and reload the world—preferably restart the server—after changing it.

Replace <multiplier> with a number from 0 through 10. The number is a multiplier applied to the rate at which the player hunger bar decreases; it is not a percentage or a number of food points.
| Multiplier | Hunger pace | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
0 |
Documented lower boundary of the setting | Use only when you have decided that the lower-bound behavior suits your world and have verified it after a restart. |
Below 1 (for example, 0.5) |
Slower than the default | Useful when players spend long stretches exploring, building or learning the survival systems. |
1 |
Default hunger rate | The normal setting for a new or existing world. |
Above 1 |
Faster than the default | Suitable for a server that wants food production and meal planning to matter more often. |
10 |
Documented upper boundary of the setting | An extreme value; test it with your server’s food economy before making it permanent. |
For example, enter /worldconfig playerHungerSpeed 0.5 to slow hunger, or /worldconfig playerHungerSpeed 2 to make it drain faster. The setting changes hunger speed only. It does not change how quickly perishable food spoils; that is controlled separately by foodSpoilSpeed.

Changing hunger on an existing world
World configuration is saved with the world. For a save that already exists, the dependable method is the live /worldconfig command rather than editing a general serverconfig.json file. Follow these steps in order.
- Identify the correct world. If the server hosts more than one save, confirm which world is currently loaded before issuing the command. A correctly typed command applied to another save will not change the world your players are using.
- Obtain the required permission. Sign in as an administrator or use a console account that is allowed to run world-configuration commands. Ordinary player access is not sufficient.
- Open the command entry point. Use the dedicated server console, or open the in-game chat/command box while connected with your administrator account.
- Enter the command exactly. Type
/worldconfig playerHungerSpeed <multiplier>. The property name is case sensitive: the capitalHand capitalSinplayerHungerSpeedmatter. - Choose a value in range. Use
1to restore the default, a value below1to slow hunger, or a value above1to accelerate it. Do not submit a value outside the documented0–10range. - Apply the world change. Reload the world after the command, and preferably perform a full server restart. A restart also gives you a clean way to confirm that the saved world configuration survives a stop and start.
- Reconnect and verify. Join the intended save, observe the hunger bar during normal play, and check that the command was accepted without a permission, syntax or range error.
A commonly cited Vintage Story Forums answer from September 13, 2024 gives the example /worldconfig playerHungerSpeed 1.0 and emphasizes both exact capitalization and administrator privileges. The decimal form 1.0 expresses the same default multiplier as 1.

Managed Vintage Story server hosts may expose world settings in a panel under a label such as WorldConfiguration. Panel names and layouts vary, so treat the panel as a world-creation or host-management interface rather than assuming it replaces the in-game command for an established save.
For a newly created world
- Stop the server if the panel requires a stopped instance for configuration edits.
- Open the panel’s world-creation or WorldConfiguration section.
- Find the hunger-speed field corresponding to
playerHungerSpeed. - Enter a value from
0to10, with1as the default. - Save the configuration, create or select the intended world, and start the server using the panel’s required save/start workflow.
- Connect and verify that the new world is the one receiving the setting.
If the panel does not clearly expose the field, use the server console command after the world has been created. Do not assume that changing a panel-wide server setting retroactively edits every existing save.

For an existing save
Use /worldconfig playerHungerSpeed ... against the loaded save, either in the server console or in administrator chat. World settings are stored with that save, which is why editing a general serverconfig.json is not the reliable approach for an already-created world. Follow the host’s stop, save and start sequence when the panel requires it, then reload or restart before testing.
How to choose a multiplier
The right value depends on how much time players spend away from food, how reliable your food supply is, and whether the server is intended to feel relaxed or demanding. Start with a deliberate target instead of changing several survival settings at once.
Use a value below 1 for a slower survival loop
A value such as 0.5 reduces the hunger-drain rate relative to the default. This gives players more time between meals without changing food spoilage, crop growth or the nutritional value of individual foods. It is useful for building-focused communities, new-player servers, or groups that cannot play long sessions every day. Because spoilage is independent, food can still expire at its existing rate; players may need storage and preservation practices even when hunger is slower.
Keep 1 for the default experience
1 is the documented default multiplier. Use it when you want the normal hunger pace, when comparing your server’s behavior with an unmodified world, or when reversing an experiment. Entering 1 explicitly is also a simple way to remove uncertainty after testing another value.

Use a value above 1 for a faster food cycle
Values above 1 make the hunger bar decrease faster. This increases the frequency with which players need to carry or prepare food, so check that your world has a practical food supply before applying a high multiplier. A faster hunger pace does not itself make food spoil faster; if you also change foodSpoilSpeed, document the two settings separately so players understand which rule produced an effect.
Treat the endpoints as deliberate experiments
0 and 10 are the documented boundaries, not recommended defaults. If you use either endpoint, test it with a small group, confirm the result after a restart, and make sure your players understand the intended survival rules. If the observed behavior is not what you expect, restore 1 while you investigate rather than repeatedly changing multiple variables.

The command changes world configuration, but players may not see the new pace until the world is reloaded. A full server restart is the safer operational choice because it unloads and reloads the save and makes it easier to distinguish a pending change from a failed command.
Recommended application sequence
- Tell connected players that the server will reload or restart.
- Run the command once with the chosen multiplier.
- Record the value and the name of the save you changed.
- Reload the world; if your host does not provide a reliable reload action, stop and start the server.
- Reconnect and check the hunger bar during ordinary activity rather than immediately after spawning.
- If your server version supports querying
/worldconfig playerHungerSpeedwithout a value, run that form to display the current setting and compare it with your record.
A restart does not turn a wrong command into a correct one. If the property name was misspelled, the value was rejected, or the command targeted another save, restarting simply reloads the unchanged configuration.

Troubleshooting a hunger-rate change
The command is rejected or does nothing
- Check that you are an administrator or using a console identity with permission to change world configuration.
- Check the spelling and capitalization of
playerHungerSpeed. It is case sensitive. - Check that the multiplier is numeric and within
0–10. - Make sure you included the command’s property name and value in the correct order.
- Run the command against the save that is actually loaded for your players.
The value was accepted but players see no difference
- Reload the world or restart the server; a live session may still be using the previous configuration.
- Confirm that the player is connected to the intended server instance, especially if you operate test and production servers.
- Query the setting without a value if that syntax is supported by your server version.
- Allow enough ordinary gameplay to observe the hunger bar. A brief observation may not reveal a changed rate.
The setting resets after a restart
- Verify that you changed the world save rather than only a panel’s temporary or creation-time field.
- Check that the host’s stop/save/start process completed successfully and that you did not start a different world.
- Apply the command again to the loaded save and record the accepted value before restarting.
- If a panel writes configuration automatically, avoid overwriting the save with an older template after making the in-game change.
Players report that food is spoiling at the same pace
That is expected when only playerHungerSpeed was changed. Hunger drain and perishable-food spoilage are separate world settings. A slower hunger bar does not extend a food item’s shelf life, and a faster hunger bar does not accelerate spoilage.
The server refuses an extreme value
Use a value inside the documented range, including its boundaries. If a decimal is rejected by your interface, try a simple numeric form such as 1 or 2, then reload and verify. Do not substitute a different setting name for playerHungerSpeed.
Operational checklist for administrators
- Decide whether the save is existing or still being created.
- For an existing save, prefer
/worldconfig playerHungerSpeed ...over editing a generalserverconfig.json. - Use exact capitalization:
playerHungerSpeed. - Choose a multiplier from
0to10. - Remember that
1is default, below1is slower and above1is faster. - Separate hunger speed from
foodSpoilSpeedwhen explaining the change to players. - Reload the world and preferably restart the server.
- Record the save name, date, chosen value and observed result so another administrator can restore the previous configuration.
Examples of common server decisions
A relaxed building server
An administrator may choose 0.5 so players can spend longer building or exploring before needing another meal. The administrator should still review food storage because spoilage remains controlled by foodSpoilSpeed, not by the hunger multiplier.
A standard cooperative survival server
Leaving playerHungerSpeed at 1 preserves the documented default. If the server previously used a custom value, entering /worldconfig playerHungerSpeed 1, then reloading, returns the hunger multiplier to that baseline.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
A demanding challenge server
An administrator might test a value above 1 with a small player group before making it permanent. The test should include travel, combat, farming and time spent away from base so the team can judge whether the increased meal frequency is sustainable.

A server moving from a panel-created world to manual administration
Once the world exists, use the live world-configuration command to make the change and keep a written record of it. This avoids confusing a creation-time WorldConfiguration field with the saved configuration of the active world.
What to tell players after the change
Publish the exact multiplier, the effective time of the reload, and whether any food-spoilage setting changed. For example: “After the restart, this world uses playerHungerSpeed 0.5; food spoilage is unchanged.” Clear wording prevents players from troubleshooting the wrong mechanic and gives them a known point from which to report problems.
