There is no single language switch that works for every version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The game normally follows the language setting of the console when that release supports the selected language. On Nintendo Switch, change HOME Menu > System Settings > System > Language, then allow the console to restart. In the European/Australian Nintendo 3DS release of Ocarina of Time 3D, the game uses the 3DS system language and supports English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian; another system language makes the game appear in English.
Which version of Ocarina of Time are you playing?
The correct fix depends on three things: the platform, the release region, and the edition of the game. A language option documented for Ocarina of Time 3D cannot automatically be applied to an N64 cartridge, and Nintendo’s general Switch setting only works when the particular software includes the language you selected.

Change the language on Nintendo Switch
Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 support guidance says that a game or software application defaults to the language selected on the console provided that the software supports that language. The setting is global, so it is changed outside the game.
Step-by-step
- Save your progress and close any game or application you do not want interrupted. Nintendo says changing the language restarts the console and closes suspended software.
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Scroll to System.
- Select Language.
- Choose the language you want to test.
- Confirm the change when the console asks. The Switch restarts to apply the new system language.
- Launch your Ocarina of Time software again and check the title screen, menus, and text.
What this setting does—and does not do
The Switch setting supplies a language preference to software; it does not translate a release that was shipped without that language. If the game remains in English after the restart, the most likely explanation is that the particular release or region does not support the selected language. Nintendo’s wording is conditional: software follows the console language only “so long as the intended language is supported by the game or software application.”

Do not assume that every way of playing Ocarina of Time on Switch has the same language catalog. A service version, a regional release, and a separately distributed edition can have different localization data. Check the game’s own regional information or official software listing before changing the console repeatedly.
Before you change the setting
- Write down the language currently used by the console if other household users rely on it.
- Close suspended software because the restart discards suspended sessions.
- Remember that the change affects the console interface and other software, not just Ocarina of Time.
- If you only want to test one language, switch back after checking the game and relaunch any software you were using.
How to check the result
Do not judge the change from one screen alone. Check the title screen, a menu, and a dialogue or item-description screen after the game relaunches. If all three remain English, that is stronger evidence that the release does not contain the selected language than an unchanged logo or a title-screen graphic would be.
A system-language change also changes the Switch interface. Menus, prompts, and other compatible games may appear in the new language. This is expected behavior, not a separate Ocarina of Time setting, so restore the original console language when you finish testing if other users need it.

The European/Australian Ocarina of Time 3D manual states: “The in-game language depends on the one that is set on the system.” For that release, the supported choices are English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian. Language selection is handled by the 3DS system, not by an in-game language menu.
Step-by-step
- Exit Ocarina of Time 3D and return to the 3DS HOME Menu.
- Open System Settings.
- Open the system’s language setting. The game manual directs players to the Nintendo 3DS system manual for the exact system-setting path, so the wording and menu position should be checked against your 3DS model and system software.
- Select one of the languages supported by your release.
- Confirm the setting, return to the HOME Menu, and start the game again.
- Check the opening text and menus. The game should now use the selected supported system language.
Supported languages and fallback behavior
| 3DS system language | European/Australian Ocarina of Time 3D result |
|---|---|
| English | English |
| German | German |
| French | French |
| Spanish | Spanish |
| Italian | Italian |
| Any other 3DS system language | English, according to the European/Australian manual |
That list is specific to the European/Australian 3DS release documented by the manual. It should not be treated as proof that every regional edition of Ocarina of Time 3D contains the same text or responds identically to every 3DS language setting.
Why the save-screen Options menu does not help
The Options entry on the game’s save screen is for gameplay controls and camera-related choices. It is not the language selector documented by Nintendo. If you are searching that menu for a language list, leave the game and change the 3DS system setting instead.

What to do if the 3DS language is unsupported
If your 3DS is set to a language outside English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian, English is the documented result for this European/Australian edition. There is no indication that editing a save file, changing a control option, or restarting repeatedly will add another language. To test one of the supported choices, change the system language, exit the game completely, and launch it again.
What is known about N64 and Virtual Console versions?
Language behavior is less uniform across the original cartridge and older download editions. Nintendo Germany’s product information lists English, French, and German for its European Nintendo 64, Wii Virtual Console, and Wii U Virtual Console versions. Those listings establish that language support varies by regional release, but the official material reviewed does not establish one language-setting procedure that applies to every N64 cartridge or Virtual Console edition.
Identify the release before changing settings
- For a cartridge, note the console region and the cartridge’s regional marking or packaging.
- For Wii or Wii U Virtual Console, identify the storefront region and the exact software listing rather than relying only on the game title.
- For an emulated or subscription version, check the software’s own supported-language information.
- Do not infer that a European listing has the same choices as a North American or Japanese release.
Why there is no universal N64 procedure here
The accessible North American N64 manual does not provide searchable text sufficient to confirm a language procedure, and the official information does not document a single menu path for all cartridges and Virtual Console editions. Consequently, applying the Switch path or the 3DS system-language rule to an N64 release would be an assumption, not a confirmed fix. Use the documentation for your console and regional edition, and treat the language list attached to that specific product as authoritative.
Practical checks for older editions
Look at the box, cartridge label, storefront description, or software-information screen for the region and language listing. Keep those details together: “N64” alone is not enough to identify the language behavior, because a European cartridge and a North American cartridge are different regional products. The same caution applies to Wii and Wii U Virtual Console listings. If the product page lists English, French, and German, that is evidence for that listing—not a guarantee for every other digital edition.
Why is Ocarina of Time still in English?
The selected language is not included in the release
This is the documented behavior for the European/Australian 3DS edition when the 3DS uses a language outside its five-language list: the game defaults to English. The same general principle applies on Switch: the console preference is used only when the software supports it. A successful system-language change therefore does not guarantee a translated game.

You changed an in-game setting that is unrelated to language
In Ocarina of Time 3D, the save-screen Options menu controls gameplay and camera options. It does not override the 3DS language setting. Use the system menu instead.
You are following instructions for the wrong edition
A 3DS manual, a Switch support article, and a European N64 product listing describe different products. Check the platform and region printed on the box, shown in the software information, or associated with the digital purchase. If those details do not match the instructions you are reading, stop and use the matching documentation.
The title is an N64 or Virtual Console release with different regional data
Nintendo’s European listings document English, French, and German for the specified N64 and Virtual Console versions, but they do not establish a universal setting path. If one of those editions remains in English, confirm its region and consult that edition’s console or product documentation instead of repeatedly changing a Switch or 3DS setting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The language changed in menus but not in every text element
Check several types of text before concluding that the setting failed. A logo, title graphic, or previously displayed screen may not visibly change, while dialogue, menus, and item text do. Relaunch the software and inspect those text-heavy screens. If they remain English across the game, return to the supported-language list and regional identification rather than assuming a defective save.
A practical checklist before you troubleshoot
- Record the platform: Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 64, Wii Virtual Console, Wii U Virtual Console, or another release.
- Record the region: European/Australian, North American, Japanese, or another regional edition where that information is available.
- Check the desired language: compare it with the documented language list for that exact edition.
- Change the correct setting: use Switch system settings for Switch software and 3DS system settings for the documented 3DS release; do not search the 3DS save-screen Options menu.
- Restart or relaunch: Switch language changes restart the console; relaunch the game on 3DS after changing the system language.
- Check the result in more than one place: look at a title, menu, and gameplay text screen so a single unchanged screen is not mistaken for a complete failure.
- If it is still English, stop changing settings: verify the edition’s supported languages and region first. An unsupported language is expected to fall back to English.
Does changing the Switch language change other games?
Yes, it changes the console-wide language preference, so other software that supports the selected language may use it as well. Software without that language will retain its own default or another supported language. Because Nintendo’s rule is conditional on software support, changing the Switch setting is not a way to add localization files to any game.
The restart also closes suspended software. Save first, and expect to reopen applications after the console comes back on. This is a system-level change, not a setting stored only in your Ocarina of Time save data.

What Nintendo’s documentation actually establishes
Nintendo’s official Switch/Switch 2 support guidance establishes the system-language rule: software defaults to the console’s selected language when that language is supported. It also establishes that changing the Switch language restarts the console and closes suspended software.
The European/Australian Ocarina of Time 3D manual establishes the system-dependent language rule and the five supported languages for that edition. Its wording is explicit: “The in-game language depends on the one that is set on the system.”
Nintendo Germany’s product information establishes English, French, and German for its European N64, Wii Virtual Console, and Wii U Virtual Console listings. It does not establish complete language coverage for every region, cartridge revision, or emulated release, nor does it provide one setting procedure for all of them. Those boundaries are why the exact platform and edition matter more than the game’s title alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change the language in Ocarina of Time?
Identify your edition first. On Switch, use HOME Menu > System Settings > System > Language, confirm the restart, and relaunch the game. On the European/Australian 3DS edition of Ocarina of Time 3D, change the 3DS system language and relaunch the game; the save-screen Options menu is not a language selector.
Why is Ocarina of Time still in English after I changed the console language?
The release may not support the selected language. Switch software follows the console language only when that language is included. In the European/Australian 3DS edition, any system language outside English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian falls back to English.

Does Ocarina of Time 3D have an in-game language menu?
The documented European/Australian release uses the 3DS system language. Change the language in 3DS System Settings, not in the save-screen Options menu.
Which languages does the European Ocarina of Time 3D release support?
Its manual lists English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian. If the 3DS uses another language, the game displays English.
Can I use the 3DS instructions for an N64 cartridge?
Not safely. N64, Wii Virtual Console, and Wii U Virtual Console editions vary by region and release. Nintendo Germany lists English, French, and German for its European listings, but no single language-setting path is established for every cartridge or download.
Will changing the Switch language erase my save?
The documented effect is a console restart and closure of suspended software. Save your progress and close the game before changing the setting; the language change itself is a system preference, not an instruction to delete game data.
What should I check before asking for more help?
Write down the platform, region, exact edition, desired language, and whether you relaunched after changing the system setting. Then compare that release’s supported-language information before trying another setting.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Ocarina of Time’s language is release-dependent. On Switch, set System Settings > System > Language, let the console restart, and confirm that the specific software supports your choice. On the European/Australian Ocarina of Time 3D release, use the 3DS system language; English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian are supported, while other system languages fall back to English. For N64 and Virtual Console editions, identify the exact region and listing before applying any instructions.
