Change the language on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S
- Press the Xbox button on your controller.
- Open Profile & system.
- Select Settings.
- Choose System.
- Open Language & location.
- Change System language to the language you want.
- Change Language region, Location, or Keyboard & dictation language only if you need to.
- Select Restart now.
The console must restart before the new system language is applied. Microsoft documents this menu path and restart requirement in its country and region support guidance. Menu labels can vary slightly with the console’s software version and current language.

Which setting should you change?
| What you want to change | Setting to use |
|---|---|
| Dashboard, menus, and system notifications | System language |
| Regional language formatting | Language region |
| Microsoft Store country, currency, and regional content | Location |
| Typing and voice dictation | Keyboard & dictation language |
| One game’s menus, subtitles, or voices | The game’s own language settings or supported localization |
Change the keyboard or dictation language
If the dashboard language is correct but typed text or voice dictation uses the wrong language, return to Settings > System > Language & location and change Keyboard & dictation language. This changes input behavior without necessarily changing the console’s entire interface. Xbox has placed these controls in the same settings area; see the Xbox Wire update announcement for the keyboard and dictation settings.
Change the language on Xbox 360
Xbox 360 has a separate, older menu structure:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Console Settings.
- Open Language and Locale.
- Select the desired Locale.
Do not treat this as identical to changing the system language on newer Xbox consoles. Changing the Xbox 360 region can involve profile migration and may affect subscriptions or other services. Review Microsoft’s region-change warnings before changing a country or region.

Do you need to change the Xbox location?
Usually, no. If you only want a different dashboard language, change System language first and leave Location unchanged.
Location is a separate regional setting. It can affect Microsoft Store availability, prices and currency, billing, subscriptions, apps, games, films, and other region-specific content. Microsoft recommends changing country or region when you have moved to another country or region for an extended period, not simply as a general language workaround. Account funds may not transfer between regions.
If a game stays in the old language
Changing the Xbox interface language does not guarantee that every game will change its menus, subtitles, or spoken audio. Games use their own localization files and may support different languages for text and voice acting. Xbox services can also fall back to a related language when a title lacks localized strings for the selected language, as described in Microsoft’s language-fallback documentation.

Try these steps:
- Open the game’s Settings, Options, Audio, Subtitles, or Language menu.
- After changing the console language, fully quit and relaunch the game.
- Check whether the game supports the language you selected.
- Look for a required language pack or additional downloadable content.
- Consider whether the installed game is from a regional edition with a different language selection.
- For backward-compatible or older games, check language support for that specific release.
A game may offer translated menus or subtitles without offering dubbed audio. Conversely, a supported language may depend on the game edition, disc, store region, or installed files.
How to restore English when the menus are unfamiliar
If you cannot read the current interface, use the Xbox button and menu positions rather than relying on translated labels:
- Press the Xbox button.
- Move to the Profile & system tab at the far right of the guide.
- Select the option marked with the gear icon for Settings.
- Choose System.
- Open Language & location.
- Set System language to English.
- Choose Restart now.
Exact translated labels differ between languages, so the gear icon and the guide’s position are more reliable than assuming every screen will use the same wording.

Troubleshooting
The language option is missing
Confirm that you are using System > Language & location on an Xbox One or Series console. If you have an Xbox 360, use its separate Console Settings > Language and Locale path. A translated interface, managed account restrictions, console model, service configuration, or language availability in your market can also affect what appears.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe console restarted but the language did not change
- Reopen Language & location and confirm that you changed System language, not only Language region.
- Make sure the restart completed fully.
- Sign out and back in if only account-specific content remains in the previous language.
- Fully quit and relaunch the affected game.
- Check the game’s own language settings.
The Store or payment behavior changed after changing location
Changing location can alter regional Store content, prices, billing, subscriptions, and account-related services. Restore the correct location rather than repeatedly changing system language and country settings. For account-specific problems, consult Microsoft’s region guidance.
What about the Xbox app for Windows?
The Xbox app for Windows is separate from the console’s language menu. Do not use the console path as a guaranteed method for changing the app’s interface. The Windows app may follow Windows language and regional settings; Microsoft treats it separately in its Xbox app for Windows support information.
