Use the changelevel command
In the dedicated-server console, enter:
changelevel de_mirage
Replace de_mirage with the internal name of the map you want to load. A Tencent Cloud administration guide lists this as the server map-change command, and Valve Developer Community documentation explains that a map can be loaded with either map or changelevel: Tencent Cloud’s CS2 server guide and the Valve Developer Community game-modes page.
The command must be sent to the server process. Typing it in the in-game developer console changes only what your client is allowed to change and does not administer a remote dedicated server. Use the host’s live-console window, a terminal attached to the server process, or an RCON tool connected with administrative credentials.

What you should see
The console should print level-loading messages, then show the server entering the new map. Players normally receive the map transition and reconnect to the new round according to the server’s normal loading behavior. If the map name is invalid or unavailable, the console will report the failure; leave that message visible while diagnosing the problem instead of repeatedly issuing commands.
changelevel versus map
Both commands are used to load a map, but they are not operationally identical. A CS2 command guide describes changelevel as a transition that keeps players connected while moving the server to the next map. The same guide warns that map can reset server variables or disconnect everyone. Treat that difference as a practical rule rather than a guarantee for every mod, plugin, or server build: test on an empty server before using a command during a live event.
| Command | Best use | Player impact reported by guides | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
changelevel |
Normal mid-session rotation or an administrator-initiated transition | Designed as a seamless-style transition that keeps connected players, although loading still takes time | changelevel de_inferno |
map |
Loading a map when you intentionally want a more complete reset | May reset server variables or disconnect players | map de_nuke |
For a populated server, start with changelevel. Reserve map for maintenance, testing, or a deliberate reset, and warn players first if a disconnect is acceptable.
Before changing the map
Confirm administrative access
- Have access to the dedicated server’s live console, or an RCON endpoint with permission to issue server commands.
- Know whether your provider exposes a browser console, SSH-attached console, game-panel console, or a separate RCON field. The command itself is the same once it reaches the server.
- If RCON commands are rejected, verify the password, port, firewall rule, and that the RCON service is enabled. Do not paste an RCON password into a public chat or a shared screen.
Confirm the map identifier
Use the map’s internal filename, not its display title. Official maps use identifiers such as de_mirage, de_inferno, and de_nuke. A title copied from a Workshop page can contain spaces, punctuation, or branding that is not the server’s map name. If you are unsure, inspect the server’s map list or the provider’s installed-map list before issuing a change.

Warn players and protect the current session
A level change ends the current round and can discard unsaved match state. Announce the destination and approximate loading time in chat or Discord, and avoid switching during a tournament round unless the rules permit it. If a plugin controls warmup, scoring, or map voting, check its documentation because it may run additional actions after a level change.
Changing to a Workshop map
Use ds_workshop_changelevel, not map_workshop
Workshop content uses a different server command:
ds_workshop_changelevel <map_name>
GameHostBros and Game Server Kings describe this command as the server-side way to switch to an available Workshop map: GameHostBros’ Workshop-map guide and Game Server Kings’ setup guide. Their examples use a map name. Other community documentation describes the argument as a Workshop ID, so the accepted form can depend on the server build, image, or management panel. Valve’s public game-modes page documents the general map/changelevel behavior but does not provide an authoritative syntax reference for this Workshop-specific command. If the map-name form fails, check the server’s console help or provider documentation and test the ID form supported by that installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not type map_workshop into a dedicated-server console. Game Server Kings reports that command as client-side; entering it on a dedicated server does not host the Workshop map.
A Workshop Collection may be required
Workshop commands operate on content the server can access. If your server uses a Workshop Collection, add the map to that Collection and configure the server to use the Collection before attempting the change. Without that configuration, the map may not appear in the server’s available Workshop list even when its public Workshop page exists.

The joedwards32 CS2 Dedicated Server Docker image documentation provides a concrete RCON workflow for servers with a Workshop Collection:
ds_workshop_listmaps
Use the listing command to see the maps the server recognizes, then select one with:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
ds_workshop_changelevel $map_name
In that Docker-image syntax, $map_name represents the selected map value; do not type the dollar sign literally unless the image’s documentation tells you to. The documentation also states that these Workshop-listing and selection commands apply only when a Workshop Collection is set.
Allow time for a first download
If the server does not already have the Workshop file, Game Server Kings reports that it downloads the map before changing level. The first download can make the console or panel look unresponsive. Watch the server output for download and extraction messages. Restarting at that point can start the download over, extending the outage. Wait for completion, then retry only if the console reports an actual error.

Changing the map through RCON
- Connect to the server’s RCON interface. Use the RCON tool or control-panel field supplied by your host. Authenticate before sending a command.
- Send the standard command. Enter
changelevel de_miragefor an official map, replacing the identifier with your destination. - For Workshop content, verify availability first. If a Collection is configured, run
ds_workshop_listmapswhere supported and choose a returned map value. - Send the Workshop command. Use
ds_workshop_changelevelwith the argument form accepted by your server installation. Community guides commonly show a map name, while some installations document a Workshop ID. - Monitor the response. Keep the RCON transcript and the dedicated-server console open until the new level has loaded. A timeout in the RCON client does not necessarily mean the server failed; the level may still be downloading or initializing.
RCON is preferable to an in-game client console because it sends the command with server authority and can be audited. Limit RCON access to trusted administrators and use a firewall or private network where possible.
Loading a Workshop map at server startup
If a Workshop map should be available after every restart, configure it during startup rather than downloading it manually after each boot. Host Havoc describes a startup-parameter method that loads a Workshop map alongside a standard starting map: Host Havoc’s CS2 Workshop-map instructions.
Control panels label the relevant fields differently. The required pieces are generally:
- a normal starting map or map-group value;
- the Workshop Collection or Workshop-map setting expected by the server;
- any provider-specific startup parameter documented for that installation.
Do not copy a parameter from an unrelated server image without checking its documentation. After saving the startup configuration, restart once during maintenance, watch the complete boot log, and confirm that the map appears in the server’s recognized Workshop list. Once it is loaded and available, later changes can be performed through RCON with the appropriate command.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Troubleshooting map changes
“Unknown command” or no response
- Check that you are in the dedicated-server console or an authenticated RCON session, not the player’s client console.
- Confirm spelling: the standard command is
changelevel; Workshop switching usesds_workshop_changelevel. - Check whether a management panel strips commands it considers unsafe. Use its documented server-console or RCON feature instead of a chat command.
- Confirm that the server is running a current CS2 dedicated-server build and that the command is not being sent to a proxy, relay, or spectator instance.
“Map not found” for an official map
Recheck the internal map identifier and its spelling. Display names, workshop titles, and URLs are not interchangeable with the filename accepted by changelevel. If the map is a custom file, confirm that it is installed on the server rather than only on your computer. Review the console’s search paths and the server’s installed-map list before attempting another transition.
Workshop map is not listed
- Verify that the map belongs to the Workshop Collection configured for the server.
- Run
ds_workshop_listmapsif your server image supports it. - Check that the Collection ID and any startup setting were saved before the last restart.
- Make sure the server has outbound access to download Workshop content and enough disk space for the files.
The server appears frozen during the first Workshop switch
Look at the dedicated-server log rather than the panel’s status badge. A download, extraction, or map precache can produce a long period with little visible activity. Game Server Kings specifically warns that restarting during this first download restarts the process. Wait for a completion or error message; restart only after the log confirms that the process has stopped or failed.
Players were disconnected
If you used map, a disconnect or reset is consistent with the behavior described by the CS2 command guides. For future live transitions, use changelevel and schedule the switch between rounds. Even with changelevel, a Workshop download, server crash, plugin action, or client lacking the map can force individual reconnects.
The map loads but the game mode is wrong
A map transition and a game-mode configuration are separate operations. A level change can leave the server’s existing mode, cvars, or plugin state in place. If the destination requires a different mode, configure that mode through the server’s normal game-mode settings before or after the transition, then verify the console output. Do not assume that changing the map alone applies competitive, casual, deathmatch, or custom rules.
Choosing the right method
| Situation | Recommended action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Switching between installed official maps during a live session | Run changelevel <mapname> |
It is the standard server-side transition and is reported to preserve connected players better than map. |
| Deliberately resetting the server while testing | Run map <mapname> only when a reset or disconnect is acceptable |
Guides report that map can reset variables or disconnect players. |
| Switching to a Workshop map already available to the server | Run ds_workshop_changelevel with the argument form your build accepts |
Workshop content is handled by a separate dedicated-server command. |
| Workshop map missing from the server | Configure a Collection or startup Workshop setting, then list available maps | The server cannot change to content it has not recognized or downloaded. |
| First-ever use of a Workshop map | Issue the command once and monitor the console without restarting | The initial download may look like a hang while it completes. |
A reliable operating checklist
- Announce the map change and wait for a safe round boundary.
- Identify the destination’s server-side map name.
- Confirm that the map is installed, or that its Workshop Collection is configured.
- Open the dedicated console or authenticate through RCON.
- Use
changelevelfor a standard map, or the documentedds_workshop_changelevelform for Workshop content. - Keep the console visible until level loading completes.
- Check the first round for the expected map, mode, spawn points, and plugins.
- Record any failed command and its console error before trying a different syntax.
This process separates three commonly confused tasks: changing the current level, making Workshop content available, and selecting the game mode. Solving them in that order prevents most failed map switches and avoids unnecessary server restarts.
