Change a Left 4 Dead 2 server’s welcome message by editing left4dead2/motd.txt, enabling the MOTD in left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg, and restarting the server. The separate host.txt file controls the narrow host banner, not the main MOTD page.

The MOTD can contain ordinary text, inline HTML, or a hosted-page URL on a line by itself at the top of the file. The exact file path and restart matter: editing a similarly named file under cfg, or changing a file while the server is running and then not restarting, are common reasons for seeing the old message.
What the MOTD controls
In Left 4 Dead 2 server terminology, the Message of the Day is the welcome content players can see after joining. It is separate from the short host banner. Treat the files as two different display areas:

If a banner changes but the full welcome page does not, you probably edited host.txt instead of motd.txt. If neither changes, check the enable setting, file location, and restart sequence.
Before you edit anything
Make the change while the server is stopped, or use your host’s file manager if it supports safe edits while the service is offline. Stopping first avoids saving over a file that the running service has open and makes the test restart unambiguous.

- Keep a copy of the existing
motd.txtandhost.txtbefore replacing their contents. - Confirm that you are working in the server’s actual
left4dead2directory, not a client installation or a similarly named backup. - Use a plain-text editor or the host panel’s text editor. Do not save the file as a word-processing document.
- Decide whether the message will be inline content or a page hosted elsewhere. The two formats are configured differently inside the same text file.
Standard dedicated-server procedure
1. Open the game directory
In a traditional dedicated-server installation, navigate to the directory named left4dead2. The main MOTD file is directly inside that directory:
left4dead2/motd.txtDo not put the main MOTD in left4dead2/cfg. That subdirectory contains configuration files such as server.cfg; it is not the documented location for motd.txt.

2. Replace the content of motd.txt
Open motd.txt and remove the default URL or existing text that you no longer want. You can then choose one of these supported approaches.
Inline text or HTML
Put the message directly in the file. Plain text is suitable for a short rule set, schedule, or welcome note. HTML can be used when you need headings, links, or simple formatting. For example:

<p>Community event: Saturday at 19:00 UTC.</p>The example is only a template; replace it with information that is accurate for your server. Keep markup simple and verify the result with a real client connection.

Instead of embedding HTML, put the URL of the hosted HTML page on a single line at the top of the .txt file. The dedicated-server guidance describes this as a URL by itself in the top of the file. Do not surround it with explanatory text on that line, because the server needs to recognize the line as the page address.

3. Enable the MOTD in server.cfg
Open:
left4dead2/cfg/server.cfgAdd the documented enable setting on its own line:
motd_enable 1Save the file after adding the line. The principal dedicated-server instructions use motd_enable. A separate command reference reports motd_enabled, so do not assume that both spellings are universally interchangeable. Cvar names can differ by game branch, plugin layer, or documentation version. Use the spelling your server accepts and verify the result in the server console. If the console rejects the setting or reports an unknown cvar, follow the spelling exposed by that server rather than leaving two competing lines in the configuration.
4. Start or restart the server
Start the stopped server, or restart it after saving both files. Then connect to the server again. A restart is part of the procedure, not an optional cleanup step: it causes the service to reread the configuration and the MOTD file.
Test with a fresh connection and check the main welcome page as well as the narrow host banner. If you can see one but not the other, use the file distinction above to identify which area still needs editing.
Editing through a game-server host panel
A managed host panel does not change the file names or their relationship. It changes how you reach them. Stop the service from the panel, open its file manager, and browse to the game directory. Edit left4dead2/motd.txt in the panel editor, then open left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg and add the enable cvar.

- Use the panel’s stop control, or confirm that the panel’s file manager edits offline files safely.
- Open the
left4dead2directory and selectmotd.txt. - Replace the default content with inline text/HTML or a single hosted URL line.
- Open
left4dead2/cfg/server.cfgand save the accepted MOTD enable cvar. - Start or restart the server from the panel.
- Reconnect as a player and inspect both the MOTD and banner.
Panel names vary, but the path should still end in the same files. If a panel presents several game instances, verify the instance name before editing; changing a backup or a different server produces no visible effect on the server you are testing.
Docker deployments
Left4DevOps Docker documentation describes MOTD display as configurable and supports supplying simple content through MOTD-related configuration. For more complex content, it documents mounting these files:

/motd/motd.txtIn that arrangement, the container’s MOTD files are supplied through the mounted directory rather than edited at the traditional host path. The documented content variables are:

Choose one source of truth for each message. If an environment variable supplies content while a mounted file supplies another version, determine which configuration your container image gives precedence to instead of editing both and guessing. After changing variables or mounts, recreate or restart the container according to your deployment method, then reconnect and test.

Docker users should also keep the distinction between host and main MOTD: mounting host.txt changes the banner, while mounting motd.txt changes the page players open as the MOTD.

Use inline content when
- The message is short and changes infrequently.
- You want the server files to contain the complete message with no dependency on another web server.
- You need a simple set of headings, paragraphs, or links and can test the HTML yourself.
Use a hosted URL when
- You need to update the page without repeatedly editing every game-server installation.
- The page is more complex than you want to maintain in a text file.
- You can keep the URL reachable and are comfortable with the MOTD depending on that external page.
For a hosted page, the URL must occupy a line by itself at the top of motd.txt. For inline HTML, the file itself contains the markup. Do not combine a URL with a sentence such as “click here” on the same first line.
Why the MOTD may not appear
Work through these checks in order. Each one addresses a different failure point, so changing several files at once can make the cause harder to identify.

Checking the cvar and server console
The enable setting is the point at which game-branch differences matter most. The primary how-to instructions use motd_enable 1, while another command reference lists motd_enabled. Treat that discrepancy as a compatibility check, not as permission to add both commands blindly.
- Save the spelling that your server recognizes in
server.cfg. - Restart the server so the configuration is loaded.
- Read the server console during startup for an unknown-command, file, or HTML error.
- Reconnect and test the display. If the console accepts the setting but the page remains absent, return to the file path and content-format checks.
Console output is especially useful for hosted URLs and Docker deployments, where a local file can be correctly mounted while the referenced HTML cannot be read.

Designing a useful MOTD
The MOTD is most effective when players can understand it quickly. Put the server identity and the few rules that affect the next round near the top. Move longer explanations to a linked page rather than turning the welcome screen into a wall of text.
- State the server’s purpose, such as campaign play or a specific rule set.
- List rules that players must know before joining a team.
- Include event times with an explicit time zone.
- Keep links readable and check them whenever the destination changes.
- Preview the message after every substantial edit, because valid text can still be difficult to scan.
Do not put operational settings in motd.txt and expect them to change gameplay. Server behavior belongs in configuration; the MOTD is presentation content, while the enable cvar determines whether that content is displayed.
