“Change the version” in Minecraft Bedrock can mean three different things: update the normal game, join the experimental Beta/Preview track, or install an older release. Updating uses your device’s app store, launcher, or console update system. Beta/Preview requires separate enrollment, while an officially supported, universal downgrade process for older Bedrock releases is not documented.
First, decide which version change you need
| Goal | What to do | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Use the newest stable release | Update Minecraft through your platform’s normal update channel. | Use the regular release, not Beta/Preview, for the most stable multiplayer compatibility. |
| Test unreleased features | Enroll in Bedrock Beta or Preview through the platform-specific process. | It is in-development software and may replace the ordinary client or have limited availability. |
| Install an older released version | Check current official support for your exact device and version. | No general, platform-wide downgrade procedure is documented in the official guidance covered here. |
Update Minecraft Bedrock to the latest stable version
Android, iPhone and iPad
Minecraft says mobile installations normally update automatically. If yours has not updated, open the app store used to install Minecraft and follow that store’s manual-update procedure for your operating system.
- Open Google Play or the Apple App Store.
- Find the installed Minecraft listing.
- Choose Update if the button is available. If the store only shows Open, no update is currently offered to that account and device.
- Launch Minecraft after the installation finishes.
- Read the version number in the bottom-right corner of the launch screen and compare it with the version shown in the Minecraft store listing.
Store rollout timing can differ by platform and account. If the store and the in-game number do not agree after updating, close and reopen the store and Minecraft, then check again.
Windows, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch
Minecraft Help separates Bedrock update instructions for Windows, mobile devices and consoles. Use the current Minecraft Help article for your platform rather than applying mobile instructions to a console or Windows installation; menu names and update controls differ between the Microsoft launcher, Windows app stores and each console store.

Enable automatic updates where your platform provides that setting. If Minecraft reports that your version is outdated, open the platform’s game-management or store screen and run its available update, then restart the game.
Join Minecraft Bedrock Beta or Preview
Beta and Preview are in-development Bedrock builds for testing features before they reach the full release. They are not a way to select any historical version.

Android Beta
- Open Minecraft’s listing in Google Play.
- Find the Beta section and choose Join.
- Install the Beta update offered by Google Play.
Android Beta replaces the ordinary Minecraft client while you are enrolled. Minecraft recommends backing up your worlds with its Backup & Restore process before installing. To leave, return to the same Google Play listing and leave the Beta, then install the regular version when Google Play offers it. Treat the backup as essential because test software can behave differently from the stable release.
iPhone and iPad Preview
iOS Preview is distributed through Apple’s TestFlight system. You must use the current Minecraft Preview enrollment flow, and capacity is limited, so enrollment may be unavailable even when the program exists.

Fix a version mismatch when joining friends
Bedrock multiplayer requires matching versions for worlds, servers, Realms and LAN games. An outdated client is a common cause of connection errors.
- Ask the host which exact release they are running and whether they are using the regular release or Preview.
- For ordinary play, leave Beta/Preview if necessary and select the latest stable release.
- Update Minecraft through your device’s normal store, launcher or console update controls.
- Restart Minecraft and try joining again.
Do not assume that installing Preview will solve a mismatch: everyone joining the same session still needs a compatible version, and Preview availability differs by platform.

Can you downgrade Minecraft Bedrock?
The official guidance covered here does not document a universal supported method for installing an older released Bedrock version across Windows, mobile, Xbox, PlayStation or Switch. That is not proof that no platform-specific exception can ever exist; it means you should not treat a third-party installer, modified client or APK as an official downgrade solution.
If an older version is required for a server, world or compatibility reason, identify the device and exact release first, then consult the current official Minecraft and platform support instructions. Preview is an in-development build and should not be described as a rollback to an arbitrary older release.
Quick Recap
Protect your worlds before changing tracks
- Back up worlds before joining Android Beta or any other test program.
- Keep a separate copy of important saves before leaving a test build or reinstalling the game.
- Confirm that the target platform supports the Preview or Beta channel you want.
- Use the stable release when reliable access to friends, Realms or servers matters most.
Quick decision guide
- Just want the newest normal game? Update from your device’s app store, launcher or console store, then verify the number on Minecraft’s launch screen.
- Want unreleased features? Enroll in the Beta or Preview program available for your platform and back up worlds first.
- Cannot join a friend? Match the host’s release and update to the latest stable version unless everyone is intentionally using a compatible Preview build.
- Need an old release? Check official support for the exact platform; do not assume a universal downgrade is available.
