Stop the Hytale server, edit the config.json file in the server installation’s root folder, change the server-name value while keeping it in quotation marks, save the file, and restart the server. The name shown in the server list is read from this configuration. If your host provides a Server Name field, use that instead and confirm the result after restarting.

What you need before changing the name
You need access to the server’s files or to the hosting control panel that manages them. A self-hosted installation normally gives you direct access to the server folder. A hosted installation may expose the same file through a web-based Files, Config, or Game Settings page, or through SFTP.

- Stop the server first. Editing a file while the process is running can be lost when the server writes its current settings during shutdown.
- Identify the active server folder. Edit the
config.jsonbelonging to the instance you actually start, not a backup, template, or different world directory. - Make a backup copy. Keep the original file somewhere safe before changing it so you can restore a known-good configuration if the server rejects the edit.
- Choose a displayable name. Use a distinct name and avoid characters that the server or server list cannot display correctly.
Change the name by editing config.json

Stop the Hytale server
Use the server’s normal stop control. On a hosting panel, this is usually a Stop button; on a self-hosted machine, stop the running server process using the method you normally use. Wait until the process has fully exited before opening the configuration.

Open the root configuration file
In the root directory of the server installation, open

Find the server-name property
Official Hytale guidance identifies the property as
ServerName. At least one hosting guide usesNameinstead. Configuration layouts can therefore differ by server build or host. Search your own file for the existing name property and use the key already present. Do not create a second, competing name entry.{ "ServerName": "Old Server Name" } -
Replace only the value
Keep the property name and JSON punctuation intact, and replace the old text between the quotation marks:

Save and close the file
Save the edited file in place as
config.json. Make sure your editor did not append a second extension such as.txtand that the file was saved to the active server directory. -
Start the server and check the list
Start the server normally. After the restart completes, look at the server list and confirm that the new name appears. A restart is required for the running server to load the changed configuration.

Hosted-server method: use the panel field when available
Many game-hosting panels provide a form field labeled Server Name on a game-settings page. Other providers place the same control under Config or Files. When that field exists, enter the new name there, save the panel settings, stop and start the server if the panel requests it, and then verify the displayed name.

The available evidence does not establish whether every panel overrides a manual config.json edit at startup. If you edit the file and the old name returns, treat the panel as the likely source of truth: change the panel field, save it, restart, and check again.
Understanding ServerName versus Name
The official Hytale instruction uses ServerName, while a separate hosting guide reports Name. That difference is a reason to inspect the file that belongs to your installation rather than blindly pasting a new property. The correct operation is to change the existing name field your server already recognizes.

If neither key is obvious, do not add several variants at random. Confirm that you opened the server’s root config.json, check the host’s configuration documentation or support interface, and compare the file with the settings shown in the panel. Adding an unknown key may leave the visible name unchanged while making the configuration harder to maintain.
Keeping the JSON valid
config.json is structured data, not a text note. The server must be able to parse it before it can read the name. A safe edit changes only the characters inside the existing value.
- Retain double quotation marks around both the key and the value.
- Keep the colon separating the key from the value.
- Preserve commas between properties and braces around the object.
- If the chosen name itself contains a double quotation mark, do not insert it unescaped; choosing a simpler display name avoids introducing a JSON syntax error.
- Do not paste smart quotation marks from a word processor in place of normal JSON quotes.
If your editor has JSON validation, run it before starting the server. Otherwise, compare the edited line with the surrounding entries and use the backup if the server reports a configuration parse error.

Troubleshooting when the new name does not appear
The old name is still shown
- Confirm that the server was actually stopped and started, not merely reloaded in a way that leaves the process running.
- Check that you edited the root
config.jsonfor the instance you launched. Multiple server folders and copied test installations are a common source of editing the wrong file. - Reopen the file after saving and verify that the new value is still present.
- Check whether the host has a Server Name field. A panel-managed value may be written back during startup; set the name in that field and restart.
- Allow the server list to refresh after the restart before deciding that the change failed.
The server fails to start after the edit
Restore the backup or undo the last change, then start the server again. The usual file-edit causes are a missing quotation mark, an extra comma, an accidental deletion of a brace, or saving the file under the wrong name. Once the server starts with the original file, make a value-only edit and validate the JSON before trying again.
The name is blank or displays incorrectly
Replace it with a simple, unique name using characters the server list can display. The available guidance warns that unsupported characters can prevent the name from showing properly, but it does not define a universal allow-list. If a plain name works and a more elaborate one does not, the character set is the likely cause.

Do not assume that the manually edited file will win. Save the desired value through the panel’s own field, restart the server, and inspect both the panel and the server list. Because override behavior is not established for every host, the post-restart result is the practical test for your provider.
Is there a command to rename a Hytale server?
No documented in-game or console command for changing the server name was identified in the available Hytale guidance. The supported procedure is configuration-based: stop the server, change the name property in config.json or the host’s corresponding panel field, and restart.
Does changing the name alter the world or player data?
The documented procedure changes the configured server-name value used for the server list. The available guidance does not establish additional gameplay effects or confirm that the setting is purely cosmetic. Keep the edit limited to the name field and avoid changing unrelated configuration entries.
