Where DayZ gets its vehicle count
DayZ creates cars through dynamic vehicle events. Each event defines how many vehicles the economy should maintain, how it replenishes them and how it removes them. The event definitions are in mpmissions/<your_mission>/db/events.xml.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe event must also have a matching spawn definition in mpmissions/<your_mission>/cfgeventspawns.xml. That file supplies the fixed coordinates where the event is allowed to place vehicles. The event name is the join between the two files: a spelling or capitalization mismatch leaves the population without usable spawn points.
cfgeventgroups.xml serves a different purpose. It describes grouped formations, not the ordinary fixed-position list used by a normal vehicle event. Editing it will not increase the count of a sedan or hatchback event unless the particular map or mod deliberately uses a grouped event.

Do not use a vehicle’s ordinary entry in types.xml as the count control. That file describes the central economy’s item types and their loot behavior; the event population for vehicles is controlled by the matching block in events.xml.
What the three count values mean
| Setting | Meaning | How to choose it |
|---|---|---|
nominal |
The target population the event tries to maintain. | Use the number of vehicles you want present when the economy has reached its target. |
min |
The replenishment floor. When the population falls below it, the event can seek replacements. | Set it below or equal to nominal, depending on how aggressively you want the server to refill. |
max |
The event’s hard ceiling. | Keep it at or above the intended nominal; a lower value prevents the target from being reached. |
These values describe an economy target, not an instant spawn command. Existing vehicles, cleanup rules, occupied positions and the server’s normal spawn cycle all affect when you see the new population.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Before you edit the mission
- Stop the server. Editing while the server is writing its economy files can leave a partial or overwritten configuration.
- Back up the entire mission folder. Keep a copy of
mpmissions/<your_mission>, not only the one XML file. A complete backup lets you restore event, position and map changes together. - Confirm the active mission. If the server starts a different map or mission than the folder you edit, your changes will have no effect.
- Identify the event used by your map or mod. Common examples include
VehicleCivilianSedanandVehicleOffroadHatchback, but custom maps and vehicle mods may use different names. - Record the current values. Write down
nominal,min,max, the event’s child vehicle types and the number of matching position entries. This makes a rollback and a later comparison straightforward.
Step-by-step: increase or reduce the car population
1. Open the vehicle event in events.xml
With the server stopped, open mpmissions/<your_mission>/db/events.xml in a plain-text or XML-aware editor. Search for the event name used for the vehicle class you want to change. For example, search for VehicleCivilianSedan when changing the civilian sedan event.
Use the existing event as your template. Do not copy a block from a different game version or map unless you have verified that its child structure and attributes match the files your server is running.
2. Set nominal, min and max together
Change the three count fields in the same event block. nominal is your target population, min is the floor that triggers replenishment and max is the upper limit. Keep the relationship internally consistent: the maximum must not be below the nominal target, and the minimum should not be higher than the target you expect the event to maintain.
The following is a complete illustrative event using a target of 12 vehicles, a replenishment floor of 8 and a ceiling of 15. Those numbers are configuration values, not a guarantee that every map has 12 usable locations.

<limit>mixed</limit>
<active>1</active>
<children>
<child lootmax="0" lootmin="0" max="15" min="8" type="CivilianSedan" />
</children>
</event>
The <child> line also contains count limits. Preserve the existing child layout and vehicle type for your version. If you change the event’s population but leave a child limit that is lower than the target, the child definition can become the effective restriction. Change child limits only when you understand the map’s existing event design or are intentionally adding another vehicle class.
3. Check the event’s lifecycle and cleanup flags
Count fields alone do not determine whether a slot becomes available again. For normal drivable vehicles, leave remove_damaged="1" unless you have a specific reason to retain damaged cars. With removal enabled, a damaged vehicle can be cleaned up so the event can eventually replace it. If damaged vehicles remain in the world and continue to occupy event slots, the server may appear to ignore a higher nominal value.
Do not casually change lifetime, restock, safety or distance radii while changing the population. Those values influence persistence and spawn conditions. Make one class of change at a time so you can identify the cause of a problem.
4. Match the event in cfgeventspawns.xml
Open mpmissions/<your_mission>/cfgeventspawns.xml and find an <event name="..."> block whose name exactly matches the event in events.xml. Match every character, including capitalization. For VehicleCivilianSedan, the spawn file must use that same string rather than a shortened or differently capitalized variant.
Inside the block, each <pos> entry supplies a fixed location. A position normally includes x, z and a attributes, for example:
<event name="VehicleCivilianSedan">
<pos x="1234.5" z="6789.0" a="90" />
<pos x="1300.0" z="6820.0" a="180" />
</event>
Use valid coordinates from the map’s existing configuration or from a location you have deliberately tested. If the event requests more vehicles than there are usable matching positions, the economy cannot place the full target simultaneously. Raising nominal above the position count therefore produces no additional cars; it only raises a target the map cannot satisfy.

Adding positions is a map-layout change, not merely a number change. Each new coordinate should be a safe, intentional parking location with the correct orientation and valid XML attributes. Removing positions lowers the event’s practical capacity even if nominal and max remain high.
5. Validate the XML before restarting
Check that every opening element has a matching closing element, attribute values are quoted, and special characters are escaped correctly. An XML-aware editor or validator can catch a missing quote, broken closing tag or duplicate structural element before the server tries to load the mission.
Pay particular attention to the event name, the three count values, the child block and every position entry you changed. Keep the backup untouched until the server has started successfully and the new configuration has been observed in game.
6. Restart and allow the economy to run
Start the server normally and inspect its startup log for mission-loading or XML errors. Then visit the relevant areas or use the server’s normal administration tools to confirm that the event is active and its positions are valid.
Do not expect an immediate fleet of new cars when the server starts. The existing saved world, current vehicles, cleanup rules and event cycle affect when replacements are considered. The exact delay on an existing saved world is not specified consistently, so judge the result only after the economy has had time to complete its normal spawn and cleanup work.
Choosing sensible population values
Pick a target from the map’s actual capacity rather than starting with an arbitrary large number. Count the valid positions in the matching cfgeventspawns.xml block, then leave room for the event’s lifecycle rules and the way players move vehicles away from their original locations.

| Configuration decision | What it changes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Raise nominal |
Raises the desired steady-state population. | Useful only when enough matching positions and valid child limits exist; otherwise the extra target cannot be realized. |
Lower nominal |
Reduces the population the event seeks. | Creates a less vehicle-dense map but does not remove every existing car immediately. |
Raise min |
Causes replenishment to become relevant at a higher remaining population. | Can make the event refill sooner, increasing vehicle density and economy activity. |
Lower min |
Allows the population to fall further before replenishment is needed. | Players may see longer periods with fewer vehicles. |
Raise max |
Allows a higher ceiling. | Has no practical effect if positions, child limits or the nominal target are lower. |
Leave remove_damaged="1" |
Lets damaged cars be removed so their slots can be reused. | Wrecks will not remain indefinitely as part of the event population. |
Keep the three event values and the corresponding child values coherent. A high event-level target paired with a lower child maximum, or a high target paired with too few positions, creates a configuration that looks changed in the file but cannot produce the requested population in the world.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Why increasing the number may not create more cars
The spawn list is too short
This is the most common structural limit. The event can use only the matching positions in cfgeventspawns.xml. Count those entries and compare the count with your target. If there are fewer positions than the target, add valid locations or choose a lower target.
The names do not match
An event named VehicleOffroadHatchback in events.xml will not use a spawn block named VehicleOffroadHatchbackSpawner, a differently capitalized name or a block for another vehicle class. Copy the exact string from the event definition into the spawn block.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
max is below nominal
If the hard ceiling is lower than the target, the economy is prevented from reaching the target by its own limits. Set max at or above nominal, then check the child maximum as well.
Damaged vehicles are occupying slots
A vehicle that remains as a damaged object can still count against the event’s available population. For ordinary drivable-vehicle events, verify that the flags include remove_damaged="1". Allow the cleanup cycle to run after correcting it; the replacement is not necessarily immediate.
The event is inactive or the wrong mission is loaded
Check that the event has <active>1</active> and that you edited the mission folder the server actually starts. A valid edit in an unused mission is indistinguishable in game from a configuration that was ignored.

The XML failed to load
Review the startup log after every restart. A malformed tag, an unquoted attribute or a damaged closing element can prevent the file from loading. Restore the backup, reapply one small change and validate again rather than stacking edits on a broken file.

On an existing saved world, the economy may still contain vehicles, reservations or cleanup state from before the edit. Give it time to process its normal lifecycle, then check the map and logs again. The configuration does not provide a command that instantly materializes the full nominal count.
Understanding the other vehicle-related files
types.xml: ordinary economy types
Do not raise a vehicle event’s population by changing an ordinary vehicle type entry in types.xml. That file is not the event-count mechanism. If you edit it, you are changing a different part of the economy and may create confusion while troubleshooting the event.
cfgeventspawns.xml: fixed coordinates
This file answers “where may this event place a vehicle?” Its event name must match the event definition, and its position list must be large enough for the intended population. Coordinates, orientation and map validity matter as much as the number of entries.
cfgeventgroups.xml: grouped formations
Grouped formations are separate from the normal fixed-position list. Use this file only when the map or mod’s event design explicitly references grouped spawning. Editing a group that the vehicle event never calls will not change its population.
Safe rollout and rollback checklist
- Stop the server and copy the complete active mission folder.
- Record the original event values and the number of matching spawn positions.
- Change only the intended vehicle event’s
nominal,minandmaxfirst. - Confirm the child type and child limits still fit the event target.
- Match the event name exactly in
cfgeventspawns.xml. - Check that the position list can support the target and that each entry is valid for the map.
- Keep
remove_damaged="1"for normal drivable vehicles unless you intentionally want different wreck behavior. - Validate both XML files and restart the server.
- Read the startup log, then wait for the economy’s normal cycle before judging the result.
- If the server reports an error or the population does not change, restore the backup and test one correction at a time: mission path, event name, position count, limits, cleanup flag and XML syntax.
The practical rule
To change the number of cars, edit the vehicle event in db/events.xml, keep nominal, min and max consistent, match that event exactly in cfgeventspawns.xml and provide enough valid positions. Once those conditions are met, cleanup behavior and the normal economy cycle determine when the server replaces vehicles. A larger number in one XML field cannot override a missing event block, an undersized position list, a lower child limit or damaged vehicles that still occupy slots.
