Change the server-wide infected limit in the active mission’s db/globals.xml. Find <var name="ZombieMaxCount" type="0" value="1000"/>, replace only the value with a whole number, save valid XML, and restart the server. The documented vanilla value is 1,000, but it is a reference default—not a performance recommendation for every map, player population, hardware setup, or mod collection.

A larger cap does not automatically put more infected in every town. DayZ also uses event definitions, territory settings, activation distance, and economy-state controls. Treat the change as a measured server-tuning exercise: back up the mission, raise the cap in steps, and watch server FPS, desync, logs, and actual infected activity.

What ZombieMaxCount controls
ZombieMaxCount is the maximum number of spawned zombies (infected) allowed across all zones on the map. Bohemia Interactive’s Central Economy configuration describes it as the “Maximal limit of spawned zombies across all zones in map.” The vanilla reference value documented there is 1000.
This is a ceiling shared by the whole server, not a promise that 1,000 infected will exist at once. The Central Economy still decides where zones are active, which infected events can run, how many infected a territory can hold, and whether the zombies subsystem is enabled. If those other limits are lower, increasing the global ceiling may produce no obvious change in a particular settlement.

Before editing: protect the active mission
Make the change while the server is stopped or in its maintenance mode. Editing a live file can race with a save and leave a partial or invalid configuration. Create a copy of the complete active mission folder before changing anything; that gives you a known-good rollback if the server will not start or the economy behaves unexpectedly.
Confirm which map and mission are active
DayZ servers commonly use a mission folder named for the map, such as dayzOffline_chernarusplus or another dayzOffline_<map> directory. The folder name alone is not enough: hosts and launch parameters can select a different mission. Check the server’s startup configuration or control-panel setting and edit the mission that the process actually loads.

Use a plain-text or code editor that does not insert rich-text formatting, smart quotes, or a byte-order mark that your host’s parser rejects. Keep the file’s existing encoding and line endings where possible. If your host provides a browser file manager, download the file, edit it locally, and upload it only after validating the result.
Step-by-step: raise the global infected cap
- Stop the server or enable maintenance mode. Wait until the control panel reports that the process has fully stopped. If your host offers scheduled restarts, temporarily disable a restart that could occur while you are editing.
- Back up the active mission. Copy the mission folder, or at minimum its
dbdirectory and the originalglobals.xml. Name the backup with the date so you can identify the pre-change version. - Open the mission’s database directory. Navigate to
db/globals.xmlinside the selected mission. Do not edit a similarly named file in an unused map folder. - Find the existing variable. Search for
ZombieMaxCount. A vanilla-style entry looks like this:<var name="ZombieMaxCount" type="0" value="1000"/> - Change only the integer value. For example, a cap of 1,500 is written as:
<var name="ZombieMaxCount" type="0" value="1500"/>Keep
type="0". Enter digits only: no commas, decimal points, spaces, or comments inside the tag. The setting is an integer, so a value such as1500.0is not appropriate. - Save and validate the XML. Check that the opening and closing syntax remains intact, the self-closing
/>is present, and the file contains no accidental editor markup. A generic XML validator can catch malformed tags before you upload the file. - Upload the file if necessary. With a hosted server, replace the active mission’s copy through the provider’s file manager or FTP/SFTP interface. Confirm the path after uploading; a correct edit in the wrong mission is indistinguishable from a setting that “does nothing.”
- Restart the server. DayZ reads the economy configuration from the selected mission. A full stop and start provides a clean reload and avoids relying on a hot-reload behavior that may not exist for this file.
- Test and observe. Join after the server is ready, visit several active areas, and check the server log, server FPS, player desync, and actual infected activity. Record the old and new values so you can undo the change precisely.
Why a higher cap may not create more zombies in town
The global cap is only one layer of DayZ’s infected economy. A town can remain sparse even when ZombieMaxCount is high because another layer is limiting spawning or because the map has not activated the relevant zones around players.

Check that the correct mission is being read
If the value appears unchanged after a restart, first verify the path and mission selection. Some hosts expose several map missions in the same file manager. Check the startup command or control panel, then reopen the file from that exact mission after restarting to ensure you edited the copy the server uses.
Check XML syntax and value type
A missing quote, an extra character, or a changed type can prevent the economy file from loading correctly. Compare the edited line with the original pattern. The name must remain ZombieMaxCount, type must remain 0, and value must be a whole-number string. Review the server log immediately after startup for XML or economy errors.
Check whether infected spawning is enabled
Open db/economy.xml and verify that the zombies subsystem is configured to initialize, load, respawn, and save. If that subsystem is disabled or fails to initialize, a larger global ceiling cannot create infected.
Check local territory and event limits
Inspect the relevant entries in zombie_territories.xml and events.xml. A local static or dynamic range can be lower than the new global cap, and event percentages influence which infected types appear. These files must be edited deliberately: changing a local range is a different operation from raising the server-wide ceiling.

Allow for zone activation and respawn timing
Infected zones are tied to player activity and activation distance. A player standing outside the relevant activation range will not force that zone to populate. After a restart or a configuration change, move through several areas and allow the economy time to process its normal spawn and cleanup cycle before judging the result.
Choosing a sensible test value
The documented vanilla value of 1,000 is a baseline, not a universal target. A server’s practical capacity depends on its hardware, map, concurrent player count, installed mods, view and activation distances, and the CPU time consumed by other Central Economy activity. No reliable universal “safe” infected number applies to every DayZ server.

Use incremental changes
Change one variable at a time. If the current cap is 1,000, test a moderate increase rather than jumping directly to an extreme value. Keep a short log containing the cap, player count, map, mod set, server FPS, and observed desync during each test window. If performance falls, return to the last stable value before testing another change.
Watch the right signals
- Server FPS: sustained drops indicate that the server is spending more time processing simulation and economy work.
- Player desync: rubber-banding, delayed hit registration, or inventory updates can accompany an overloaded server, although network conditions can also contribute.
- Infected behavior: watch for delayed spawns, unusual clustering, slow cleanup, or AI that appears unresponsive.
- Logs: check startup and runtime logs for XML parsing failures, economy errors, or repeated spawn-related warnings.
- Player load: repeat the test with a realistic population; an empty server can hide the cost of many active zones.
Do not use the cap to solve every density problem
If the goal is denser towns rather than a larger map-wide pool, identify the limiting layer first. Adjusting zombie_territories.xml addresses local static and dynamic ranges; adjusting events.xml addresses event and type behavior. Raising ZombieMaxCount alone can simply allow more infected elsewhere on the map while leaving a particular town unchanged.

These approaches have different scopes and risks. Decide what you are trying to change before touching a file.

Common failure cases and recovery
The server fails to start after the edit
Stop trying new values and restore the backed-up globals.xml. If the server starts with the backup, compare the changed line character by character. Typical causes are a missing quote, malformed tag, invalid number format, or an upload that truncated the file. Validate the corrected XML, upload it to the active mission, and restart again.
The server starts, but the old behavior remains
Confirm that the restart was a real process restart rather than a panel refresh. Then verify the active mission path and reopen the file from that path. Check that the line contains the intended integer and that no second ZombieMaxCount entry elsewhere is being mistaken for the active one.
More infected appear, but performance is poor
Lower the cap to the last stable value and restart. If you still need more pressure, test smaller changes while monitoring a realistic player population. Review zone activation distance, territory ranges, event behavior, and other economy-heavy settings instead of continually raising the global ceiling. More active infected mean more AI work, so performance costs can rise even when the displayed count does not immediately reach the cap.

Only one town is sparse
Do not assume the global cap is the problem. Check whether the town’s zone is active at the current player position and whether its territory ranges or event definitions allow the density you expect. Compare several towns to determine whether the issue is local or map-wide before changing another file.

Changes disappear after an update or reinstall
Keep a dated backup and a record of every changed line. Server updates, mission replacements, and host migrations can restore default files. After maintenance, confirm the selected mission and reapply only the settings you have verified, then perform the same restart and observation process.
Hosting and operational requirements
A hosted DayZ server is suitable for this configuration only if you can access the active mission files, edit db/globals.xml and related economy files, and perform a full restart. Before choosing or changing providers, verify those three capabilities in the control panel or support documentation. A panel that exposes only basic server toggles but not mission-file access cannot reliably support this procedure.
