How to Change the PHP Version on Your WordPress Site

A practical 2026 guide to changing PHP for WordPress on cPanel, choosing between PHP Selector and MultiPHP Manager, checking compatibility, and recovering from failures.

On most cPanel accounts, change PHP for a WordPress site in the hosting panel, not in WordPress itself: open Software > Select PHP Version (also called PHP Selector), choose the version, and click Apply or Set as current. Back up the site and check plugin and theme compatibility first. Then confirm the result in Tools > Site Health > Info > Server.

For a single account containing several domains, know which setting you are changing. PHP Selector normally changes every site under that cPanel account; MultiPHP Manager (sometimes labelled Per Domain Settings) is the per-domain alternative.

Which PHP version should WordPress use in 2026?

The official WordPress position as of October 14, 2026 is straightforward: PHP 7.4 is the minimum supported version, while PHP 8.3 or newer is the recommended baseline. Choose the newest version your host offers that your active plugins and theme support, rather than staying on an old release simply because the site currently works.

PHP version WordPress status in 2026 Practical decision
7.2 or 7.3 Unsupported by WordPress 7.x. WordPress 7.0 dropped both versions. Do not plan a new deployment on either version. Sites that remain on PHP 7.2 or 7.3 cannot move to WordPress 7.x and remain on the 6.9 branch.
7.4 Official minimum supported PHP. Use only as a compatibility fallback when a plugin, theme, or host prevents a move to a newer release. It is an aging runtime, not the recommended target.
8.3 Official recommended minimum. WordPress.org asks hosts to support PHP 8.3 or greater and notes that older PHP releases have reached end of life. Use as the normal target when your extensions and site code pass compatibility checks.
8.5 WordPress 6.9 and 7.0 are documented as fully supporting PHP 8.5; the previous beta label was removed in May 2026. Use when your host provides it and your plugins and theme are compatible. Confirm support for any commercial or custom code separately.

WordPress has not scheduled another minimum-PHP increase. The project uses a 5% usage baseline when deciding whether to retire a PHP version. A September 2026 WordCamp US discussion summary put PHP 7.4 usage at roughly 18% of websites; that figure is context, not a decision to keep 7.4 supported indefinitely.

Some older hosting guides still describe PHP 8.2 as the recommended minimum. For a current WordPress decision, follow the WordPress Core team and WordPress.org guidance of 8.3 or newer.

What the PHP version controls

PHP is the server-side runtime that executes WordPress core, plugins, themes, scheduled jobs, and custom PHP files. WordPress itself can display the active runtime, but the dashboard does not replace it. The host’s control panel or hosting support team makes that change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A version change can therefore affect more than the page you are viewing. A plugin may fail only when a particular form is submitted, a theme may break only on a template that is rarely visited, or a scheduled task may stop while the front page still appears normal. Treat the switch as an infrastructure change and test the functions that matter to visitors and administrators.

What to do before changing PHP

A PHP switch changes the runtime that executes WordPress core, plugins, themes, scheduled jobs, and any custom code. Prepare a recovery path before touching the setting.

  • Back up the complete site. Save both the WordPress files and the database. A database-only export cannot restore missing uploads, themes, plugins, or custom files.
  • Run a PHP compatibility check. Use a reputable compatibility-checker plugin to identify plugins and themes that may fail on the target version. Update those components only after confirming that the updates are compatible with the site and its WordPress version.
  • List every site in the cPanel account. PHP Selector commonly applies account-wide, including add-on domains, aliases, and subdomains. Record which sites share the account and plan to test all of them.
  • Record the current version. In WordPress, open Tools > Site Health > Info and expand Server. Keeping the old value makes it easier to revert accurately if a problem appears.
  • Choose a maintenance window. Make the change when you can check the front end, administrator area, forms, commerce flows, and other revenue-critical functions immediately afterward.
  • Record the intended target. Write down the version you plan to select and whether the setting is account-wide or limited to one domain. This avoids confusing a successful panel change with a successful site test.
  • Confirm access before starting. Keep both cPanel credentials and WordPress administrator credentials available. A WordPress login alone cannot change a host-level PHP setting.

Interpreting a compatibility check

A checker is a warning system, not a guarantee that every request will work. Review the results against the plugins, theme, and custom code that are actually active. A reported issue in an inactive component may not block the move, while a small custom snippet can matter even if it is not packaged as a plugin. Resolve or document high-risk findings before changing the runtime, and keep the previous version recorded so you can make a precise rollback.

How to change PHP version WordPress on cPanel

The names and placement of controls vary between cPanel hosts, but the common self-service path is the following.

  1. Sign in to cPanel. Use the hosting account that owns the WordPress installation. The PHP version is controlled by the host, so a WordPress administrator account alone is not enough.
  2. Open the Software section. Find Select PHP Version. Your host may call the same feature PHP Selector. If both names appear, they normally lead to the same version-management screen.
  3. Open the version selector. The current PHP release is usually shown near a drop-down or a control labelled Current PHP version. Review the available choices; the list reflects what that host has installed and enabled.
  4. Choose the target release. Select PHP 8.3 or a newer available release when your compatibility check is clear. If a verified incompatibility blocks the upgrade, PHP 7.4 is the official floor, but treat it as a temporary compatibility position rather than a long-term target.
  5. Apply the change. Click Apply, Set as current, or the equivalent button in your host’s interface. Do not assume the change affected only one domain; PHP Selector is commonly account-wide.
  6. Test every site on the account. Open the home page and several representative pages for each domain, sign in to each WordPress dashboard, and exercise important forms, searches, media uploads, scheduled tasks, and transaction paths. A compatibility issue can be limited to one plugin or one subdomain.
  7. Verify from WordPress. In the relevant dashboard, go to Tools > Site Health > Info, expand Server, and read the reported PHP version. Check the value on each WordPress site rather than assuming that the panel selection propagated everywhere.

Why the setting is not changed inside WordPress

WordPress runs on the PHP interpreter supplied by the web host. The WordPress dashboard can report that interpreter’s version, but it does not replace it. That is why the change occurs in cPanel or another hosting control panel and is then confirmed under Site Health.

What if the version is not in the dropdown?

The dropdown shows only versions installed and enabled by the host. Do not substitute an unrelated version or copy a configuration directive from another server. Ask support whether the desired release is available for the account and whether an account-wide or per-domain setting is required.

PHP Selector or MultiPHP Manager: which should you use?

The important difference is scope, not the WordPress version itself.

cPanel tool Scope When it fits Risk to check
Select PHP Version / PHP Selector Normally the whole cPanel account, including add-on domains, aliases, and subdomains. Use when all sites on the account can run the same PHP release or when the account contains only one site. One incompatible site can fail when you change the shared setting. Test every site before and after applying it.
MultiPHP Manager (also called Per Domain Settings) Individual domains selected in the manager. Use when different domains need different PHP releases during a staged migration or because their code has different compatibility requirements. Confirm that you selected the correct domain and that aliases or subdomains are covered by the host’s domain mapping.

Using MultiPHP Manager for a per-domain change

When your cPanel account provides the feature, open Software > MultiPHP Manager (or Per Domain Settings), select the domain, choose the desired PHP version, and apply the setting. Labels and selection controls differ by host, so use the wording displayed in your account. Verify the version from that domain’s WordPress dashboard under Tools > Site Health > Info > Server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use PHP Selector for a one-domain experiment when other sites on the account must remain unchanged. Its account-wide behavior is the reason MultiPHP Manager exists.

How to verify the switch and find problems

Confirm the runtime WordPress is actually using

  1. Log in to the WordPress dashboard for the site you changed.
  2. Open Tools > Site Health.
  3. Select the Info tab.
  4. Expand the Server section and read the PHP version.

This check confirms the runtime seen by WordPress, rather than relying only on what the hosting panel displayed. Repeat it for every affected domain.

Run a practical smoke test

After the version number is confirmed, test both anonymous and administrator-facing behavior. Load the home page, an ordinary content page, a page with a form, and a page that uses the active theme’s special template. Sign in and open the dashboard, edit a draft, upload a media file, run a search, and check any scheduled or commerce workflow that the site depends on. These checks are especially important on accounts where one PHP Selector change affects several independent sites.

If the site shows an error after the change

Do not keep testing a broken production site while the new version is active. Use the same cPanel control that made the change to return to the previously recorded PHP version, then restore the backup if files or the database were altered. Re-run the compatibility checker, update or replace the component identified as incompatible, and schedule another attempt. If the panel will not let you revert, ask the host to restore the previous version and provide the exact error and the time of the switch.

If only one plugin or theme fails

The PHP change can expose code that was already incompatible with the target release. Keep the site on the last working PHP version while you isolate that plugin or theme, contact its maintainer, or move the site to a compatible release. Do not lower every domain on an account unnecessarily; MultiPHP Manager can isolate domains when the host provides it.

If a different domain breaks

This usually indicates that an account-wide PHP Selector setting affected another site. Check each domain’s Site Health report, revert if necessary, and use MultiPHP Manager for separate versions when available. The account-wide scope is a planning issue, not evidence that WordPress selected the wrong version.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Changing PHP without a full backup: a database export alone cannot restore files.
  • Testing only the homepage: failures can be limited to a plugin screen, form, scheduled task, or subdomain.
  • Assuming a dropdown is per-site: PHP Selector commonly affects the whole account.
  • Choosing an old release because it is familiar: 7.4 is supported but below the recommended 8.3 baseline.
  • Using an unverified .htaccess recipe: folder-level overrides are not established as a dependable cross-host procedure and a wrong directive can take the site offline.
  • Leaving the old version unrecorded: without that value, a rollback becomes slower and more error-prone.

What if cPanel does not show Select PHP Version?

Not every host offers a self-service PHP switch, and some hosts do not permit customers to change PHP versions at all. If Select PHP Version or PHP Selector is missing from the Software section, contact the host’s support team. Ask which PHP versions are available for the account, whether the setting is account-wide or per-domain, and whether support must perform the change.

Do not install an unverified .htaccess snippet merely because a third-party guide suggests it. Folder-level overrides were not established as a dependable procedure across hosts, and an incorrect directive can take the site offline.

Hosts that do not use this cPanel path

The steps above apply to the common cPanel workflow. Plesk panels, managed WordPress services, VPS installations, and nginx-based setups use different controls, and a universal procedure should not be assumed for them. Use that provider’s documented PHP-setting workflow or ask support for the exact path. The underlying order remains the same: back up, check compatibility, change the host runtime, and verify it from WordPress.

Planning a safe upgrade for several WordPress sites

For a portfolio of sites, treat the PHP move as a staged change rather than a single click.

  1. Group sites by compatibility. Separate sites whose plugins and themes are confirmed on the target release from those that need remediation.
  2. Choose the scope. If every site in the cPanel account is ready, PHP Selector is simpler. If readiness differs, use MultiPHP Manager or ask the host whether per-domain settings are available.
  3. Upgrade a low-risk site first. Apply the target version to one suitable domain, then complete the Site Health check and functional smoke test.
  4. Proceed domain by domain. Record the selected release and the verification result for each site. Keep the backup and the previous PHP value with that record.
  5. Finish the holdouts. Sites that cannot yet run PHP 8.3 or newer should remain on the highest compatible supported release while their plugins, themes, or hosting constraints are resolved. PHP 7.4 is the official minimum; PHP 7.2 and 7.3 cannot be used as a path to WordPress 7.x.

WordPress PHP version requirement 2026: the practical takeaway

WordPress currently supports PHP 7.4 and later, recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, and documents full PHP 8.5 support for WordPress 6.9 and 7.0. The safest change is therefore not simply “pick the highest number”: back up first, check the code that runs on the site, account for cPanel’s account-wide behavior, use MultiPHP Manager when domains need separate releases, and verify the result in Site Health.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change PHP version WordPress uses?

Change it in your host’s control panel, not in the WordPress dashboard. In cPanel, open Software > Select PHP Version or PHP Selector, choose the target release, and click Apply or Set as current. Then verify it under Tools > Site Health > Info > Server.

How do I change PHP version in cPanel for WordPress?

Back up the files and database, run a compatibility check, open cPanel’s Software section, select PHP Selector, choose PHP 8.3 or a newer compatible release, and apply it. Test every site in the account because PHP Selector is commonly account-wide.

What is the PHP Selector for a WordPress site?

PHP Selector is the cPanel interface that changes the PHP runtime supplied to the account’s sites. It normally affects add-on domains, aliases, and subdomains together. MultiPHP Manager is the alternative when versions must be assigned per domain.

Which PHP version should WordPress use in 2026?

WordPress lists PHP 7.4 as the minimum supported version and recommends PHP 8.3 or newer. Use the newest release your host offers that your active plugins, theme, and custom code support. WordPress 6.9 and 7.0 are documented as fully supporting PHP 8.5.

Can I keep PHP 7.2 or 7.3 and upgrade WordPress?

No. WordPress 7.0 dropped PHP 7.2 and 7.3. Sites that remain on either version cannot move to WordPress 7.x and remain on the 6.9 branch until their PHP runtime is upgraded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will changing PHP affect all my domains?

If you use PHP Selector, usually yes: the setting commonly applies to the complete cPanel account, including add-on domains, aliases, and subdomains. Use MultiPHP Manager or Per Domain Settings for separate versions when your host provides that feature.

What should I do if the site breaks after changing PHP?

Return to the previously recorded PHP version using the same cPanel control, and restore the backup if necessary. Then isolate the incompatible plugin, theme, or custom code, update or replace it, and schedule another tested attempt. If you cannot revert, contact the host with the error and switch time.

What if Select PHP Version is missing from cPanel?

Your host may not offer self-service switching or may not permit customer changes. Contact support and ask which PHP releases are available, whether the setting is account-wide or per-domain, and whether the host must perform the change. Avoid unverified .htaccess overrides.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Back up the complete site, check compatibility, and change PHP in the hosting panel. Target PHP 8.3 or newer when your code supports it; treat PHP 7.4 as the official fallback floor. Use PHP Selector only when every site in the account is ready, use MultiPHP Manager for per-domain control, and confirm each runtime in Tools > Site Health > Info > Server.
