Only set $cfg['PmaAbsoluteUri'] when phpMyAdmin cannot discover the address users see, such as after port forwarding or a multi-layer reverse proxy. Its value must be the complete HTTPS URL and path, including a trailing slash.

Decide where the URL is actually controlled
The browser address is not normally changed in a phpMyAdmin menu. It is produced by the layer that exposes the phpMyAdmin document root or upstream service. Before editing anything, identify the layer receiving the request first; changing an inactive file has no effect.
- Distribution package: The package may add an Alias, location, or include file to the web server’s active configuration.
- Direct Apache deployment: The path is usually in an Alias directive or a virtual-host block.
- Nginx with PHP-FPM: The public location and the FastCGI script mapping must agree with the installation directory.
- Reverse proxy: The proxy publishes one prefix and forwards or rewrites it to the upstream phpMyAdmin path.
- Docker: Port publishing controls the host and container ports, while a proxy controls any subdirectory such as
/db-console/.
Look at the active virtual host or proxy configuration, not only a sample file. Package layouts differ by operating system, distribution, and installation method, so there is no single universal path to edit.

Choose a public path that will not create new routing problems
Use a path with a leading slash and decide whether it is a directory-style route. A value such as /db-console/ is easier to reason about than a path that depends on implicit slash redirects. Keep spelling and capitalization identical at every layer: URL paths are commonly case sensitive.
Do not confuse a URL path with a port. https://admin.example.test/db-console/ changes the path, while https://admin.example.test:8443/ changes the port. A deployment can use both, but each is configured in a different place.

Find the active rule
In Apache, locate the Alias or equivalent rule that maps the current public path to the phpMyAdmin directory. A package may place that rule in a separate include file, while a manual installation may keep it inside the site’s virtual host. Confirm which virtual host serves the hostname users enter.
Change the external prefix
Replace the old path with the new one and preserve the directory-style trailing slash. The following is an illustrative shape; substitute the actual installation directory and retain the access directives already required by your server:
Alias /db-console/ /var/www/phpmyadmin/
<Directory /var/www/phpmyadmin/>
Require all granted
</Directory>The first path is public; the second is the filesystem directory. They are independent values. Do not move files merely to rename the URL unless you have a separate reason to change the installation.
Check slash and case behavior
Test both /db-console and /db-console/. Apache should normalize the first to the second or otherwise produce one canonical result. Make sure no second Alias, rewrite rule, or virtual host still claims the old prefix, because overlapping rules can send requests to different directories.

Validate and reload
Run the configuration test appropriate to your Apache installation, then reload the service rather than rebooting the server. A common Linux command is:
sudo systemctl reload apache2Some distributions use a different service name or require a graceful reload command. If validation reports an error, restore the previous file, correct the syntax, and test again before reloading.
Nginx with PHP-FPM: keep location and script paths consistent
Update the public location
Nginx needs a location block for the new prefix. That block must serve static assets and send PHP scripts to the PHP-FPM socket or upstream already used by your installation. Do not copy a generic block over a package-provided one without comparing its existing security and FastCGI settings.
An illustrative arrangement looks like this:

}The exact try_files, SCRIPT_FILENAME, socket name, and access rules depend on the package and PHP version. The important requirement is that the browser prefix, the regular-expression location, and the filesystem path describe the same application.

Prevent duplicated or missing prefixes
A common failure occurs when Nginx adds /db-console to a filesystem path that already contains it, or when the location strips the prefix before PHP-FPM while generated links still include it. Compare the request URI, the script filename, and the installation directory. Keep one deliberate mapping instead of compensating with several rewrites.
Test and reload
Validate the complete Nginx configuration and reload the service. A typical command is:

sudo systemctl reload nginxIf the new page loads but CSS, JavaScript, or login redirects point to the old route, the location or prefix handling is incomplete; fix that before removing the old mapping.
Reverse proxy: publish one prefix and forward it predictably
When a proxy sits in front of Apache, Nginx, or a container, users see the proxy’s URL, not necessarily the upstream URL. For a public address such as https://admin.example.test/db-console/, the proxy must either pass that prefix unchanged to an upstream configured for it or remove and replace the prefix in a controlled way.
Rewrite only once
Decide whether the upstream phpMyAdmin instance expects /db-console/, /phpmyadmin/, or the site root. Then implement one corresponding rewrite. In HAProxy, for example, a path-replacement rule can conceptually turn the public prefix into the upstream prefix:
http-request set-path %[path,regsub(^/db-console,/phpmyadmin)]This line is an example of the operation, not a drop-in replacement for every HAProxy configuration. Preserve the remainder of the path, query string, host handling, and any existing HTTPS headers used by your deployment.
Watch cookies and redirects
Authentication can appear to succeed and then immediately fail when a proxy changes the cookie path or strips a prefix inconsistently. Redirects can likewise send users to the old route, while generated links can duplicate the prefix, producing addresses such as /db-console/db-console/. Inspect the browser’s network requests and response headers to see which layer introduced the wrong path.
Use an absolute-URL override only when detection fails
phpMyAdmin normally derives its public address from the request. A proxy that terminates TLS, forwards a nonstandard port, or hides the external prefix can prevent that detection. In that case, set PmaAbsoluteUri as described in the next section; do not use it to compensate for a mapping that is simply wrong.

Docker: separate port publishing from path rewriting
Understand the two mappings
Docker port publishing determines which host port reaches the container. It does not, by itself, create a subdirectory URL. If users should visit https://admin.example.test/db-console/, the reverse proxy still has to route that prefix to the container’s application path.
For a direct port-based address, verify the host-to-container port mapping used by your Compose file or container command. For a subdirectory address, configure the proxy in front of the container and decide whether the container receives the prefix unchanged or receives a rewritten path.
Keep the container’s expected path intact
Many container images are built to serve phpMyAdmin at their own application root. If the proxy removes /db-console, make sure it also sends the resulting path the container expects. If it leaves the prefix, configure the application and web server inside the container to recognize that prefix. A mismatch produces the same symptoms as a conventional reverse-proxy error: missing assets, failed redirects, or a login loop.
Apply changes safely
Update the proxy configuration and container environment together, then recreate or restart only the affected service. Keep the previous port and route available until the new URL has passed the write test described below. Do not assume that changing a published port changes phpMyAdmin’s generated links; ports and path prefixes are separate concerns.

In config.inc.php, the setting takes the complete externally visible URL, including scheme, hostname, port when relevant, full path, and a final slash:
$cfg['PmaAbsoluteUri'] = 'https://admin.example.test/db-console/';The phpMyAdmin configuration reference describes this as the complete URL, with the full path, to the installation directory. The trailing slash is significant. Use the HTTPS address that users actually enter, not an internal container name, private upstream address, or filesystem path.

Do not set a guessed value merely because the route was renamed. If phpMyAdmin already detects the correct address, an unnecessary override can make a later hostname or proxy change harder to diagnose. After changing the setting, reload the layer that reads config.inc.php and clear any browser cookies for the old route before testing.
Reload the correct front end
Reload the service that owns the edited rule. Examples on systemd-based Linux systems include:
sudo systemctl reload apache2for an Apache deployment.sudo systemctl reload nginxfor Nginx.sudo systemctl reload haproxyfor HAProxy, after validating its configuration.
Service names, reload support, and configuration-test commands vary by operating system and package. A Docker deployment may require a proxy reload, a container restart, or a Compose recreate, depending on where the changed file is mounted. Check the service status immediately after reloading so a failed configuration does not leave the front end stopped.
Verify the new URL with a real database operation
A page that merely renders is not enough. Use this sequence after every path change:
- Open the exact HTTPS URL with the chosen prefix and trailing slash.
- Confirm that the page, stylesheets, images, and JavaScript load from the same prefix rather than the old route.
- Sign in and verify that the session remains active after navigating to another database and table.
- Browse a table and open a row for editing.
- Make a harmless, reversible change and save it, then confirm the result appears when the row is viewed again.
- Inspect redirects, cookies, and links for duplicated prefixes, missing slashes, wrong schemes, or internal hostnames.
- Check the web server, proxy, PHP-FPM, and container logs for 404, 403, 502, authentication, or path-related errors.
- Only after these checks pass, remove or disable the old route, unless you intentionally want a redirect.
The edit-and-save check is especially useful because it exercises generated forms, redirects, cookies, and the request path rather than only the initial HTML response.
Troubleshoot by symptom

Security controls still matter after a rename
A less obvious path is not an access-control boundary. Anyone who discovers the route can still reach the application unless another control blocks them. Apply the security measures recommended for phpMyAdmin deployments:
- Serve the application over HTTPS and prefer HSTS where the rest of the site can support it.
- Disable production error display so PHP or database details are not disclosed to visitors.
- Remove unused
testandsetupdirectories from the production installation. - Choose an authentication mode appropriate for the server and database environment.
- Restrict access by source network, firewall, VPN, or an authentication proxy where feasible.
- Enable two-factor authentication when the selected phpMyAdmin authentication setup supports it.
- Monitor authentication failures and web-server logs for scanning, repeated login attempts, and requests to both the new and retired paths.
- Install security updates when phpMyAdmin publishes them and keep the PHP runtime and web server supported.
If you deliberately keep the old path, use a controlled redirect only when it will not expose a second unauthenticated route. Otherwise, remove the old Alias, location, or proxy rule so there is one known entry point.
Compare deployment approaches before editing

When to keep or retire the old URL
Retire the old route after the new address passes navigation, authentication, and a table edit/save test. Removing it reduces ambiguity and prevents an overlooked rule from becoming an alternate entry point. A deliberate redirect can be useful during a planned migration, but document its destination and ensure it does not preserve a broken prefix or bypass the access restrictions applied to the new route.
After retirement, test the old URL from a fresh browser session and from any monitoring or administrative tools that may still use it. Update bookmarks, health checks, firewall allow-lists, and internal runbooks so operators do not reintroduce the previous mapping during the next server change.
