To change the resolution of future PS5 video clips, open Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Captures > Video Clip Format and choose an available resolution. For 4K, use a compatible 4K display and start a manual recording from the Create menu; setting the PS5’s TV output to 4K by itself does not ensure that every clip is recorded in 4K.
Change the resolution for future PS5 clips
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Captures and Broadcasts > Captures.
- Open Video Clip Format.
- Choose the available resolution and file format. Sony lists 1920×1080 (1080p) and 3840×2160 (4K) as the standard choices; 1080p is the default. The menu controls the file type and resolution, not a universal codec setting. Sony’s capture guide describes this menu.
This setting affects clips recorded after you change it. It does not alter existing files.
Record a deliberate 4K clip
Sony’s PS5 FAQ identifies manual recording through the Create button as the 4K video-recording path. For a reliable test:
- Connect the PS5 to a compatible 4K display and make sure the 4K option is available in the capture settings.
- Press the controller’s Create button and open Capture Options.
- Choose the manual recording resolution—3840×2160 for 4K or 1920×1080 for 1080p, if both are offered.
- Select Start New Recording. Press Create and stop the recording when finished.
Menu wording and the location of quick-access controls can change with system software. The capture settings remain available under Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Captures. Sony’s current capture guide says a new recording can run for up to one hour. Saving recent gameplay lets you save between 15 seconds and one hour, but do not assume that this produces a 4K clip: Sony distinguishes default recording from manual 4K recording.

Recording resolution and TV output are different settings
| Setting | What it controls | Menu path |
|---|---|---|
| Capture resolution | The dimensions of a saved video clip | Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Captures > Video Clip Format |
| Video output resolution | The signal sent from the PS5 to the TV or monitor | Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Resolution |
Under video output, Automatic selects the highest resolution the connected TV supports; 2160p selects 4K when the setup supports it. See Sony’s PS5 4K resolution guide. Outputting at 4K does not, on its own, set every recording to 4K.
If the 4K recording option is missing
Sony ties the 4K capture option to a compatible 4K display. If it is not offered, check whether the PS5 detects the display correctly before troubleshooting the capture menu.

- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and check Information for the Connected HDMI Device for 4K capability.
- Set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p if supported, then revisit Video Clip Format and the Create menu’s Capture Options.
- If 4K is still not detected, connect the PS5 directly to the TV, try the included PS5 HDMI cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable, and use the TV’s appropriate HDMI 2.1 port where applicable. Check the TV’s firmware and restart the PS5.
Sony’s resolution guide also recommends checking the HDMI setup and video-output settings when troubleshooting 4K output. A display showing a 4K picture is not proof that a particular saved clip is 4K.
Why a clip can look lower resolution than expected
- You saved recent gameplay. For deliberate 4K capture, select the manual recording resolution and use Start New Recording.
- The upload or message was compressed. Sony warns that external services may reduce shared video resolution. Compare the original with the shared copy before changing console settings.
- You checked a preview rather than the original. A mobile-app preview or platform playback may not show the file’s original dimensions.
- The game did not render natively at 4K. A clip can be 3840×2160 in file dimensions even if the game rendered at a lower or dynamic resolution. File dimensions and native game-rendering detail are not the same thing.
Resolution is only one part of video quality. Frame rate, HDR, file format and any re-encoding by an upload service are separate factors; choosing a different file format alone does not add image detail. Sony documents an HDR-related capture setting, but 4K selection should not be taken as a guarantee that a clip preserves HDR.

Check the actual clip file
- Open Media Gallery from the PS5 home screen and locate the original clip.
- For a dependable check, copy the capture to a USB drive and inspect the file’s dimensions on a computer or compatible device. Sony explains how to view and copy captures in its Media Gallery guide.
- Compare the file dimensions with the capture setting you selected. A 3840×2160 file is 4K in dimensions; a 1920×1080 file is 1080p.
What about existing clips and PS5 Pro?
Changing the capture setting cannot turn an already saved 1920×1080 clip into genuine 3840×2160 detail. Editing software can upscale it, but that enlarges the image rather than restoring detail that was not captured.
PS5 Pro owners may see Sony’s 8K screenshot option. Sony documents that feature for screenshots—not as a general 8K gameplay-video recording mode. Its 8K output guide also notes that starting certain features, including Share Screen, Share Play, broadcasting or Remote Play, can stop gameplay recording while 8K output is active. See Sony’s capture guide and resolution guide.

Choose 1080p or 4K
| Your goal | Practical choice |
|---|---|
| Quick messages or social sharing | 1080p is often the simpler choice; services may compress or downscale either resolution. |
| Local archiving, editing or a service that preserves 4K | Use 4K manual recording if available, allowing for larger files and longer copying, uploading and editing. |
| Limited storage or a 1080p-only display | Use 1080p. |
| A clip already recorded at 1080p | Keep the original or upscale for convenience; it cannot be converted into genuine 4K detail. |
Sony does not give a universal file-size figure for these choices; size depends on the recording and settings. A capture card is not required to change the PS5’s built-in recording resolution.
