Error 0x82D40004 usually means your Xbox One cannot verify the license needed to launch a game or confirm that its required disc is present. Start by identifying whether the game is digital or disc-based: sign in with the account that owns a digital copy, or insert the original disc for a disc copy. Then check Home Xbox sharing and Xbox network status before reinstalling or resetting anything.
Start with the game’s purchase type
The game can be installed on the console and still fail to launch if Xbox cannot confirm access to it. Being signed in to an Xbox account is not enough if that account did not buy the digital game or receive access through a valid sharing or subscription arrangement. For a disc game, the installation does not replace the disc as proof of access. Xbox’s error-code guidance describes the issue; the exact cause depends on how you access the game.
- Digital game: Sign in with the purchasing account, or check whether another profile’s access is being shared through Home Xbox.
- Disc game: Insert the original disc and leave it in the drive while launching.
- Subscription game: Confirm that the subscription and the title’s current entitlement are still available.
Fix a digital game license
Sign in with the account that owns the game
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system, then select Add or switch.
- Choose the Microsoft account that purchased the game and try launching it again.
If you are unsure which account bought it, sign in to plausible family accounts and check My games & apps → Ready to install. You can also review each account’s Microsoft order history. An installation from another person’s account is not, by itself, proof that your profile has a permanent license. If the purchasing account is unavailable, recover access to it or confirm that a legitimate sharing arrangement applies; reinstalling cannot restore a missing entitlement.
Check the Home Xbox setting for shared access
One Xbox console can be designated as an account’s Home Xbox. That setting allows other profiles on that console to access eligible digital games and certain subscription benefits. If the purchaser changed the setting to a different console, other profiles may lose access here.

- Sign in with the account that owns the game.
- Open Settings → General → Personalization → My home Xbox.
- Check whether this is the console set as Home Xbox. Select Make this my home Xbox only if this is the console that should receive the account’s shared licenses.
Home Xbox changes are limited, so do not toggle the setting repeatedly as a general fix. See Xbox’s Home Xbox guidance for details; dashboard labels can vary slightly after system updates.
Check subscription and purchase status
A game installed through Game Pass or another subscription is not necessarily a permanent purchase. Access can end if the subscription expires, the game is no longer included, or the subscription belongs to an account whose sharing setup no longer covers this console. Check the relevant account and current entitlement on the Xbox Game Pass page. A refund, payment issue, or account enforcement action may also affect access.

Fix a disc-based game
- Insert the original game disc and wait for the console to recognize it. Keep it in the drive while playing, even if the game is fully installed.
- Inspect the disc for cracks, deep scratches, warping, or label damage. Clean it with a soft, lint-free cloth, wiping from the center outward.
- Confirm that the disc is compatible with your Xbox One model and title. Backward-compatible Xbox 360 or original Xbox games can have different compatibility behavior.
- Try another known-good game disc in the console. If available, test the affected disc in another compatible Xbox.
If only the affected disc fails, suspect damage to that disc or a title-specific installation problem. If multiple game discs fail, the console’s optical drive may need diagnosis. If the console recognizes the disc but still shows 0x82D40004, check account or network verification as well as media condition. Do not force the disc mechanism or insert unofficial cleaning objects.
If the account or disc checks out, restore verification
Check Xbox service and network status
A working home internet connection does not guarantee that Xbox account services are available. Check the live Xbox Status page for account, profile, or gaming service incidents. If there is an outage, wait for service to recover rather than repeatedly resetting the console.

When services are available, check the console connection at Settings → General → Network settings. Captive portals, restrictive networks, router problems, or temporary sign-in failures can interfere with license checks. Use the console’s built-in connection test before changing network settings.
Refresh the sign-in and console state
- Highlight the game on the Home screen, press the Menu button, and select Quit.
- Press the Xbox button, open Profile & system → Sign out, then restart the console and sign in again.
- If the error remains, hold the console’s power button for about 10 seconds, unplug its power cable briefly, reconnect it, and restart. Try launching while connected to Xbox network services.
A full power cycle clears temporary console state; it does not repair a missing game license. For further official troubleshooting, use the Xbox error-code search guide or Xbox Support.

Reinstall only after confirming access
Reinstalling may help if the entitlement is confirmed and only one title has a damaged local installation. It will not fix a wrong account, expired subscription, missing shared access, or unreadable disc. Before uninstalling, confirm saved games have synchronized; a large download may be inconvenient on a slow or metered connection.
- Open My games & apps, highlight the affected game, and press Menu.
- Select Manage game and add-ons, then uninstall the game. Use Uninstall all only after checking that saved data is synchronized.
- Reinstall from the account’s owned or currently available library. For a disc game, use the disc and keep it available for launch.

When to contact support or reset the console
Contact Xbox Support if the purchasing account and entitlement are confirmed but the console still rejects access, or if multiple discs fail. Multiple failed discs point more toward a drive problem than one damaged game disc; seek hardware service rather than buying another console before diagnosis.

A factory reset is a last software step, not a first-line license fix. Before considering one, verify the account and entitlement, Home Xbox setup, service status, disc behavior, and (where appropriate) the installation. Confirm that saves are synchronized or backed up first:
- Reset and keep my games & apps preserves installed games and apps but removes accounts and resets system settings.
- Reset and remove everything removes local content. Unsynchronized saves and captures may be lost.
Use Xbox’s console reset instructions if you decide a reset is necessary.
