Benches unlock after story progression; if the option is missing, continue the main story. Game guides also report that you can use the bed in your Hotel Z room.
Change the time at a bench
-
Find and approach a bench in Lumiose City.
-
Interact with the bench and select “pass time.”
-
The game advances to the next broad time period. Repeat the interaction if you need to move forward again.
Nintendo’s official gameplay tips say, “Once you’re far enough into the game, you can rest at benches to move time forward.” Nintendo does not specify the exact unlock mission on that page. Gamer Guides identifies the third Z-A Royale promotion battle as the unlock point, but that milestone is guide-reported rather than officially confirmed: Gamer Guides’ time-changing guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Venture into Hyperspace Lumiose in this additional story content that can be accessed after completing the main game
- Work with the mysterious baker, Ansha, to make donuts that awaken the Mythical Pokémon Hoopa’s power and grant you and your Pokémon a variety of useful effects
- Join Team MZ and the Mega Evolution Successor, Korrina, to investigate Hyperspace Lumiose, the otherworldly home to rare and hyper-strong Pokémon
- Discover new Mega Evolutions such as Mega Raichu X, Mega Raichu Y, Mega Chimecho and Mega Baxcalibur
- Claim Holo-X and Holo-Y in-game apparel items, which you can wear as soon as you are able to customize your character’s look and outfit in the main game
Use the Hotel Z bed as an alternative
Game guides also report that resting in the bed in your bedroom at Hotel Z changes the time period. If you are already at the hotel, try interacting with the bed; the bench remains Nintendo’s officially documented method.
Why change the time?
Nintendo describes bench-resting as “a quick way to access the Z-A Royale at night or get some training in during the day” on its official tips page. The Pokémon Company’s gameplay overview likewise describes catching and training during the day before battle zones appear at night. GameWith reports that some wild Pokémon appearances vary by time, though the available information here does not establish a dependable species-by-species list: GameWith’s time-change guide.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
How the natural day-night cycle works
You can also wait for time to change naturally. GameWith reports a 24-minute cycle with four periods: morning lasts 4 minutes, day 8 minutes, evening 4 minutes, and night 8 minutes. Game8 gives a simpler split of 16 minutes of day and 8 minutes of night. These are guide-reported timings, not measurements confirmed by Nintendo. Watch the time indicator around the map to follow the cycle.

No “pass time” option: The feature is progression-gated. Continue the story; Gamer Guides reports that the third promotion battle unlocks bench resting.

The period seems stuck: A story event or another sequence may temporarily pause time changes. Gamer Guides notes that story progression can prevent the cycle from advancing, so this is not necessarily a bug.
Nintendo Support documented a specific timing issue in which the day/night change coincided with a move hitting its target during certain side missions. It could block mission progress or, in a mission that awarded a Pokémon, result in the mission ending without the Pokémon. Nintendo lists the issue as fixed in its Pokémon Legends: Z-A update information; it should not be treated as a current general risk.
