Check Customize or the stream details for the thumbnail control, save, and verify the public watch page. The available controls can differ for a stream that is already live or completed, so first identify which broadcast state you are editing.
First identify what you are editing
A “24/7 recorded lecture stream” could mean a scheduled broadcast, an active encoder stream, or a completed archive. YouTube’s controls depend on that state. A stream key is an ingest credential used by the encoder; it is not the place to change viewer-facing metadata. You do not need to reset the key just to change a title or thumbnail.

Change a scheduled stream’s title and thumbnail

In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go live.

In Live Control Room, open Manage and select the correct scheduled stream. Confirm the date and lecture before editing, especially if you have multiple sessions scheduled.

Choose Edit and update the title in the stream settings. Other metadata fields may also be available there.

Look under Customize or the available stream details for a thumbnail control. YouTube’s production guide documents adding a custom 16:9 thumbnail during Live Control Room setup, but the current help guidance does not promise the same control is present for every stream state.

Save the changes, then open the public watch page and verify the title and thumbnail. YouTube does not specify a universal refresh time for every surface, so check the result instead of relying on a fixed delay.

If the stream is already live or has ended
Active broadcast
Open the specific active broadcast in Live Control Room or its video details in Studio. Inspect the controls actually shown for that broadcast. YouTube says encoder or mobile metadata can be set at creation or changed from stream settings using Edit, but it does not explicitly guarantee that title and thumbnail fields remain editable for every already-live encoder configuration. If the field you need is absent, the available official guidance does not establish another guaranteed method for changing it on that active broadcast.
Completed archive
Find the past stream in YouTube Studio’s Live/content listing and open its video details where available. Treat this as editing the archive, not changing the settings of a scheduled broadcast. A continuous broadcast does not necessarily produce one complete archive: Google/YouTube’s production guide advises teams that need an archive to record streams longer than 12 hours separately for manual upload. That is guidance from the production document, not a guarantee of current automatic archive behavior for every account or configuration.

Make the lecture easy to recognize
Write an accurate, scannable title
Google/YouTube’s live streaming guide recommends leading with the key topic and context, making titles accessible to multilingual audiences, and placing the most important information in the first 60 characters because some YouTube surfaces may truncate titles there. For a lecture, put the course or subject and session context first; add the lecturer or date only when it helps viewers distinguish this recording. Do not imply that a recording is a live lecture if it is not.
Choose a representative thumbnail
Google/YouTube recommends a clear, high-contrast thumbnail that accurately portrays the content. For a lecture, use an image tied to the actual session, with text that remains legible at small sizes. Avoid artwork that suggests unrelated content. The recommendation is about clarity and accuracy, not a promise of more views.

Common problems and fixes

You cannot find the broadcast: Use Manage for scheduled streams, and confirm you selected the correct date or session. For an ended stream, look in Studio’s Live/content listing rather than the scheduled-stream list.

The title or thumbnail control is missing: Confirm you opened the broadcast itself, not just its stream key or encoder settings. For an active stream, YouTube does not guarantee every metadata field remains editable; use only the controls shown for that broadcast.

The thumbnail or title has not changed on the watch page: Save the edit and check the public page directly. The official guidance does not give a fixed propagation time across all YouTube surfaces.

You are considering resetting the stream key: Do not reset it for a metadata edit. The key tells the encoder where to send the feed; title and thumbnail are viewer-facing stream details.

You expect a complete archive of a very long broadcast: Plan a separate recording and manual upload if you need the full archive of a stream longer than 12 hours, following Google/YouTube’s production-guide caution.
