Requirements before using the takeover command
You must control the dedicated server
The administrator password is configured as a launch parameter. Set it in your host’s startup settings or in the server launch line. If you have just added or changed the password, restart the server so the new parameter is loaded.
Do not confuse this administrator password with the password players use to join the server. The GM authentication step uses the administrator credential, not the ordinary server join password.
Confirm the installed build
A current administrator guide updated September 28, 2026 lists gm take_over_target_tribe and attributes its command coverage to developer private-server documentation and Steam patch notes. That guide also notes that its underlying command table was last revised in August 2024, so later additions or behavior changes may not be represented.
Before changing a live tribe, confirm that the command is accepted by the build running on your server. A technical command reference distinguishes command names recovered from a Linux dedicated-server binary from details documented by the community; command availability can therefore vary with the server build.
Confirm the intended target
The command acts on the tribe of the player you target. Identify the correct tribe member before opening the console, and make sure the crosshair is actually over that player when you issue the command. Because the documentation does not promise a reversible workflow, treat the action as a consequential administrative change.
Step-by-step: take over a tribe as the server administrator
1. Set or verify the administrator password
- Open the dedicated server host’s startup configuration or launch command.
- Set the administrator password launch parameter to the credential you intend to use.
- Restart the server after adding or changing the parameter.
- Keep the administrator password separate from the server’s player join password.
If you do not control the startup settings, you cannot complete the documented GM authentication flow yourself. Ask the server operator to perform the takeover or provide the appropriate administrative access.
2. Join the server and open the console
Connect to the server normally, then press the tilde key, ~, to open the in-game console. One current command reference also notes numpad minus for some keyboard layouts. If tilde does nothing, try the alternate key and check whether your keyboard layout maps the key differently.
3. Authenticate through the GM system
- Enter
gm key [administrator password], replacing the bracketed text with the actual administrator password. - When the GM panel opens, enter the administrator password again as requested.
- Confirm that the panel identifies you as an administrator before attempting the tribe command.
Use the literal password value in place of the bracketed notation; the brackets are explanatory syntax, not characters to type. If authentication fails, recheck the launch parameter, restart status, and the distinction between the administrator and join passwords.

4. Aim at a member of the tribe
Close or leave the GM panel as needed, place the crosshair on a player in the tribe whose chief permissions you need to assume, and verify the target’s identity. The command guide describes targeting a player in the tribe, rather than selecting a tribe from a separate list.
5. Run the takeover command
With the intended player targeted, run:
gm take_over_target_tribe
The documented result is that the administrator takes chief permissions of the targeted player’s tribe. The available guide does not specify a required online status for the original leader, a notification message, or the exact permissions retained by the former leader. Do not promise any of those outcomes to players in advance.

After the command completes, inspect the tribe and chief controls available to your administrator account in the current build. If the game gives no clear confirmation, avoid repeating the command blindly; first verify the target, console response, and server logs or operator procedures available to you. The command documentation does not guarantee that the action can be undone.
Pre-flight checklist for a live server
Use a short checklist so the takeover is deliberate rather than an accidental console action:
- Record the server name and the game build currently running.
- Confirm that you, or the person performing the action, control the dedicated-server startup settings.
- Verify the administrator password separately from the player join password.
- Tell affected players when the administrative change will occur.
- Identify the target player by name and confirm that the player belongs to the intended tribe.
- Have the exact command copied with its underscores intact:
gm take_over_target_tribe. - Decide how you will verify the result in your build before issuing the command.

Do not invent a replacement command or assume that removing a player, inviting a new member, or transferring an NPC will change the tribe chief. Those actions are different from changing chief permissions. Ask the server owner to perform the administrative takeover, or inspect the leadership controls in the exact game build and mode you are running.
If the owner is considering the takeover, provide the exact player name and tribe that should be targeted and agree on the timing first. The command affects a live tribe, and the available documentation does not describe a guaranteed rollback.
Do not confuse leadership with transferring an NPC tribesman
A Steam community answer dated July 11, 2024 describes a separate operation for transferring an NPC tribesman to another clan member. It says both players need to be online, the receiving player must have available tribe capacity, and the current holder uses the hold-E interaction and chooses Transfer.
- Have the current NPC holder and the receiving clan member online.
- Confirm that the receiving player has room in the tribe’s capacity.
- Stand at the NPC and hold the interaction key, typically
E. - Choose Transfer and select the eligible clan member.
Those steps change control of an NPC tribesman. They do not transfer the tribe’s chief permissions and should not be used as a workaround for a leadership dispute.
What to verify after a takeover
Because the command guide does not define a universal confirmation message or a complete permission matrix, verify the outcome using controls that are visible in your own build. Check whether the chief-level controls now appear for the administrator account and whether the tribe shown on screen is the intended one. Ask an affected player to report what they see, but do not treat a player’s lack of an immediate notification as proof that the command failed.
Write down the time of the command, the targeted player, and the console response. That record helps the server operator distinguish a targeting mistake from a version mismatch. If controls do not change, stop and review the authentication state, target, spelling, and build rather than issuing the command repeatedly.

Anyone who can authenticate with the administrator password may have broad GM capabilities beyond tribe management. Share that credential only through the server’s normal operator process, and avoid posting it in public chat or screenshots. A player’s ability to join the server does not imply permission to use GM commands.
Use a planned maintenance window when possible. The available documentation does not state whether the former chief must be online, whether every member receives a notice, or whether the operation is reversible. The console will not open
- Try
~and, on layouts where it is supported, numpad minus. - Check the keyboard layout and make sure the game window has focus.
- Confirm that you are connected to the dedicated server rather than a mode that does not expose the same console.
gm key is rejected
- Use the administrator password configured in the server launch parameter.
- Do not substitute the player join password.
- If the password was changed recently, restart the server before trying again.
- Complete the second password confirmation in the GM panel.
The command is reported as unknown
Verify the spelling, including the underscores: gm take_over_target_tribe. Then check the server’s installed build. The current guide’s command table has an August 2024 revision date, and technical references may reflect a particular Linux dedicated-server binary rather than every later build. If the command is still unavailable, ask the server operator to confirm the command set for that build instead of repeatedly issuing it on live data.
The wrong tribe was targeted
