To change a vBulletin administrator password, sign in to the AdminCP, open Users > Search for Users, filter Primary Usergroup to Administrators, open the intended account, enter the new password, save it, then log out and sign back in to verify the change. This procedure requires AdminCP access and permission to manage administrator accounts.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
What you need before changing the password
The documented administrator-management procedure assumes that you can already sign in to vBulletin’s AdminCP and that your account is allowed to manage administrator users. It is not a public-site password-reset process. If you cannot reach the AdminCP or your account lacks the necessary permission, the steps below will not give you access by themselves.

- AdminCP credentials: You need a working administrative login for the control panel.
- User-management permission: Your account must be able to search for users and edit administrator accounts.
- The correct control-panel address: The usual URL pattern is
https://www.example.com/forums/admincp/, but the directory may have been renamed. - The intended account: Decide whether you are changing your own administrator account or another administrator’s account before editing anything.
The vBulletin Manual describes AdminCP as the control panel for site administration. The path shown above is a pattern, not a promise that every forum uses the same domain, forum directory, protocol, or control-panel directory.
Find the correct AdminCP login URL
When the installation uses the default directory
If the forum was installed with the standard directory name, append /admincp/ to the forum’s URL path. For example, a forum at https://www.example.com/forums/ commonly uses https://www.example.com/forums/admincp/. Replace the example domain and forum path with your site’s actual address.

When the AdminCP directory was renamed
Administrators can change the control-panel directory name in config.php. When that has happened, the login address uses the configured directory instead of /admincp/. A 404 page at the standard address does not prove that the panel is gone; it may indicate that the directory was renamed. Use the path configured for your installation, and do not guess repeatedly if your host or another administrator has deliberately obscured it.
Change another administrator’s password in AdminCP
SiteGround’s knowledge-base procedure, updated Aug. 7, 2025, gives the following sequence for changing a vBulletin forum administrator password. Follow it from the AdminCP session that has user-management authority.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open the user search: In AdminCP, select Users > Search for Users.
- Choose the administrator group: In the Primary Usergroup drop-down menu, select Administrators.
- Run the search: Click Find to display accounts whose primary usergroup is Administrators.
- Open the intended account: Click the username you actually need to change. Check the account name carefully before editing the form.
- Enter the new password: Set the replacement value in the account’s Password field. Use the form’s save or update control to commit the user record.
- Verify the change: Log out of the administrative session and log back in with the new password for that account. SiteGround specifically advises logging out and then logging in with the new administrative password.
The search can return more than one account. The instruction to change the password applies to each account only when you intentionally mean to update each one. Do not edit every result automatically: another administrator may be a separate person, an emergency account, or an account whose credentials must remain unchanged.
How to handle multiple results safely
Confirm the account identity
Read the username and any identifying details shown in the user record before entering a password. Similar usernames, old staff accounts, and service accounts can appear in the same administrator-group result. If the account is not the one you were asked to update, return to the results rather than saving changes.

Change one account at a time
Open, edit, save, and verify each intended account separately. This creates a clear record of which account was changed and avoids accidentally applying the same password decision to unrelated administrators.
Coordinate the hand-off
If the account belongs to another person, tell that person through an approved private channel that the password changed and provide the new credential securely. Do not put an administrator password in a public post, ticket visible to a broad group, chat room, or email thread with unnecessary recipients.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteVerify that the new password works
Verification is part of the procedure, not an optional clean-up step. A successful save only proves that the form was accepted; it does not prove that the login you intend to use can authenticate.
- Save the edited user record and wait for the AdminCP response.
- Sign out of the administrative session.
- Return to the correct AdminCP URL, including the renamed directory if applicable.
- Enter the username for the account you changed and its new password.
- Confirm that the account reaches AdminCP normally.
If the new login fails, stop making additional account edits. Recheck the username, the exact AdminCP address, and whether the password was saved on the intended user record. Avoid changing other administrator accounts as a guess-based recovery tactic.

Changing your own password from the public site is different
vBulletin documents a separate self-service route for a logged-in user changing that user’s own password. From the public site, open your profile, choose Edit Settings, open the Account tab, enter the current password, enter the new password twice, and save.
This profile workflow targets the currently logged-in user’s account. It is not the AdminCP route for managing another administrator, and it does not replace the administrator search procedure when you need to update a different account.

Which password-change method fits your situation?
| Method | AdminCP access | Account it targets | Directory consideration | Documentation scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AdminCP user search | Required, with permission to manage administrator accounts | Another administrator or any selected account returned by the administrator filter | Use the configured AdminCP directory; it may not be /admincp/ |
Documented by SiteGround on Aug. 7, 2025 |
| Public profile > Edit Settings > Account | AdminCP is not required, but the user must be logged in and know the current password | The logged-in user’s own account | Uses the public forum site rather than the AdminCP URL | Described in the vBulletin Manual |
| Database edit or lockout recovery | AdminCP access is unavailable or insufficient | Depends on the exact recovery procedure and installation | Does not establish the correct AdminCP path | A current, version-independent procedure is not established in the cited documentation |
The table’s distinction matters: having access to the public forum does not automatically grant permission to change another administrator’s password, while being logged in as a user does not make the public profile form an administrator-management tool.
Troubleshoot common problems
The standard AdminCP URL does not open
Check whether the installation changed $admincpdir in config.php. The AdminCP URL must use that configured directory. Also check that you are using the forum’s real path, including any subdirectory and the correct HTTPS scheme.

You can open AdminCP but cannot edit the account
Your logged-in account may not have permission to manage administrator users. Ask an administrator with the required authority to perform the change or to grant the appropriate permission through the site’s established access process. Do not assume that every control-panel login has identical rights.
The search returns several administrators
That is expected when several accounts have Administrators as their primary usergroup. Select only the account you intend to change. If the requested account is missing, verify its primary usergroup and confirm that you searched the correct forum installation.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The new password is rejected after saving
First verify that you saved the intended user record and that you are trying the matching username. Then confirm that you returned to the correct AdminCP directory, especially if the site uses a renamed directory. If the problem persists, use the site’s documented support or recovery process for its exact vBulletin version; do not apply an unverified database-edit recipe as though it were universal.
You no longer have any working administrator login
The cited administrator-management instructions require AdminCP access, so they do not establish a universal solution for a complete lockout. The available material also does not establish a current, version-independent database recovery method. Identify the exact vBulletin version and follow an authoritative procedure for that version, or obtain qualified assistance from the person or service responsible for the server and forum installation.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Password-handling practices after the change
- Use a password that is not reused on the public forum, hosting account, email account, or another administrator login.
- Store the credential in an approved password manager rather than in a browser note, shared document, or unprotected text file.
- Give the password only to the account owner or authorized operators who need it.
- Record which account was changed and when, without recording the password itself.
- Remove or rotate temporary credentials after the intended user has confirmed access.
These practices do not change vBulletin’s menu path, but they reduce the chance that a successful password change creates a new exposure.
Quick checklist
- Confirm that you have AdminCP access and permission to manage users.
- Locate the correct AdminCP URL, including any renamed directory.
- Open Users > Search for Users.
- Set Primary Usergroup to Administrators and click Find.
- Select only the intended username.
- Enter the new value in the Password field and save the record.
- Log out and log back in to verify the changed credential.
- Use the public profile’s Edit Settings > Account path only when changing the currently logged-in user’s own password.
What the documented procedure does—and does not—cover
The AdminCP search-and-edit workflow is the normal documented way to change an administrator password when you can access the control panel. It also makes clear why account selection and URL accuracy matter: the filter can expose several administrators, and a renamed control-panel directory changes the address you must use.
It does not establish a universal method for recovering from a total lockout, editing a database safely, or bypassing a forgotten password across every vBulletin release. Those cases require version-specific, authoritative instructions rather than a generic recipe.
