YouTube receives that outgoing feed; its documented setup does not provide a universal YouTube Studio control for swapping the live video mid-event. Avoid stopping the encoder or ending the event if keeping the existing stream active is your goal.
Where to make the change
First identify what is producing and sending the live video: encoder software, a hardware encoder, or a cloud streaming service. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key entered in the encoder. The source change generally belongs in that sending system, not in the YouTube watch page. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe that relationship.
The exact source-switch procedure varies by product. YouTube’s reviewed instructions do not give one set of steps that applies to every encoder, nor do they document a universal Studio button for changing the incoming video during an active event.
Change the video while preserving the event
- Confirm the active event and sender. In YouTube Live Control Room, identify the event that is currently live. Then determine which encoder or service is connected to it and sending the picture.
- Prepare the replacement source. Make sure the video or playlist is available to the encoder or service and is compatible with its accepted input format. For a change that must happen at a particular moment, prepare the next item before switching rather than stopping the current feed.
- Use the sender’s source or playlist controls. Change the outgoing source in the encoder or service. Keep the existing YouTube event active; do not end the event or stop the encoder as a routine part of the switch. YouTube says stopping content from the encoder ends the stream, so a source change that involves stopping the feed risks losing the active event.
- Check the incoming stream. Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream health after the change. YouTube checks the incoming stream for errors; for an incorrect-format error, its guidance calls for H.264 video and AAC audio. See YouTube’s live streaming error guidance.
- Verify what viewers receive. Confirm the new video appears in the live preview and on the viewer-facing stream. Do not assume that a brief feed interruption will preserve the same event, watch page, archive, or chat: the available YouTube guidance does not guarantee those outcomes for interruptions.
If you use StreamNeo
StreamNeo documents an Update Playlist control for changing the playlist on its own running 24/7 stream. This is a StreamNeo service workflow, not a YouTube Studio feature. Check the current interface and behavior before relying on it for a time-sensitive broadcast; the published workflow does not establish that every playlist change is interruption-free. See StreamNeo’s playlist-update instructions.

What metadata and stream keys do—and do not do
YouTube’s live-stream settings let you edit metadata, reuse settings, and reset a compromised stream key. Those controls are separate from replacing the video feed. Changing a title or description does not change what the encoder is sending, and resetting a key is not a source-switch method. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
Archive limits for continuous streams
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a longer, continuous 24/7 session will be archived, so do not rely on it as an archive guarantee for a stream that runs beyond 12 hours. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe the under-12-hour threshold.

Troubleshooting a failed switch
- The old video is still playing: The change may not have been made in the system actually sending the live feed. Confirm which encoder or cloud service is connected to the event, then make the source change there.
- The preview shows a format error: Check the outgoing video and audio format. YouTube’s guidance for the documented incorrect-format case specifies H.264 video and AAC audio. Review the full error-message guidance.
- The event ended: YouTube says stopping content from the encoder ends the stream. If preserving the same event matters, avoid stopping the sender during a routine source change. The reviewed guidance does not promise that reconnecting will restore the original event, watch page, archive, or chat.
- The stream key needs attention: Use YouTube’s stream-key controls only when the key itself needs to be changed or reset; that does not replace the source-switch step. See Manage live stream settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a cloud-managed playlist rather than a computer or encoder running at home, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams what you upload at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one price per slot, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
