In Minecraft Java Edition, open the pause menu, select World Options, and change Personal Game Mode to Creative. You can also use /gamemode creative if you have command access, or hold F3 and tap F4 to choose a mode.
Change your mode in World Options
- Pause the game and open World Options.
- Set Personal Game Mode to Creative.
This player-specific control is available in Java Edition 26.3. It changes your active mode; Default Game Mode is a separate setting for the world’s default. Mojang describes Personal Game Mode as equivalent to using /gamemode or F3 + F4. Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 release notes

Use the /gamemode command
- Open chat.
- Enter
/gamemode creativeand submit it.
Commands must be enabled and you must have permission to use them. In a singleplayer world, enable Allow Commands in World Options if the command is unavailable. You can also turn on Allow Commands while creating a world. Mojang’s Minecraft commands guide
On a multiplayer server, command access depends on your permissions. If you cannot use the command, ask the server operator to grant access or change your mode.

Use the F3 + F4 game-mode switcher
- Hold F3 and tap F4 to open the switcher.
- Tap F4 to cycle through modes, or select one with the mouse.
- Release F3 to apply the selected mode.
