Use /worldconfig toolDurability X to change tool durability on an existing Vintage Story world. Replace X with a whole-number multiplier from 0 to 99; the default is 1, while 2 gives every tool double its normal durability. Run the command in the dedicated-server console or in administrator chat. For a world that has not been created yet, set toolDurability under WorldConfiguration in serverconfig.json.

Change durability on an existing world
The administrator command is the correct method for a world that already exists:

Run it from the dedicated-server console
- Open the console for the Vintage Story dedicated server.
- Enter
/worldconfig toolDurability X, using a number from 0 to 99. - Submit the command and watch the console for its response or any error message.
- Have a player join or continue playing and test a tool when convenient.
Run it from administrator chat
- Join the server with an account that has administrator permission.
- Open the in-game chat.
- Enter
/worldconfig toolDurability X. - Submit the command.
The command is case-sensitive. Type toolDurability exactly as shown. The square brackets sometimes displayed in wiki command syntax indicate a replaceable argument; they are not characters to type. Do not enter a literal [X].
Selecting the multiplier

The setting is a multiplier for all tools. The official description does not document a separate server multiplier for individual tool types, materials, or single player inventories. If you need different behavior for different tools, a world-level command alone does not provide that granularity.
Set durability before creating a new world
For a new world, you can place the value in the server configuration before world creation. The setting belongs inside the WorldConfiguration object in serverconfig.json:

Find and edit the file
- Locate
serverconfig.jsonin the dedicated server’s server data directory. - Stop the server before editing the file. This prevents the running process from overwriting your changes and avoids a partially written configuration.
- Make a backup copy of
serverconfig.json. - Open the file in a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting.
- Find the existing
WorldConfigurationobject. Add"toolDurability": "2"inside that object, using commas correctly if other properties are present. - Save the file and check that the JSON remains valid before starting the server.
- Start the server and create the new world.
A missing comma, an extra comma, or a misplaced brace can stop the server from reading the file. If the server fails to start after the edit, restore the backup and reapply the change carefully.
Why the file method is for new worlds
World settings in serverconfig.json are applied before a world is created. Once the world exists, use the administrator /worldconfig command to change this setting rather than relying on a pre-creation configuration entry.

What the setting changes—and what it does not
toolDurability changes the global durability multiplier used for tools in the world. It is not a command for editing one pickaxe, axe, or other item in a player’s inventory.
Vintage Story’s item data distinguishes between an item’s maximum durability and its current wear:
- The item definition’s
durabilityvalue is an integer maximum-use value. - When an item reaches zero uses, it disappears.
- The current remaining durability is stored separately as a
treeAttribute.
Because maximum durability and saved current wear are separate data, treat the command as a world-level gameplay setting, not as an operation that directly rewrites a particular tool’s remaining uses. The published documentation does not state whether changing the multiplier recalculates already-worn items, so do not assume that existing tools will be restored, reduced, or otherwise retroactively recalculated. Test on a backup or a disposable tool if that behavior matters to your server.

The built-in command and configuration file are the documented server mechanisms. A mod should be considered only after checking that its release supports the exact Vintage Story version running on your server and that its configuration syntax is still valid.

Verification is useful when several administrators manage the same server or when a configuration file has been edited manually.
- Confirm that the command used the exact capitalization
toolDurability. - Check that the number is within the documented 0–99 range.
- If you edited JSON, confirm that the entry is inside
WorldConfiguration, not in a different top-level section. - For a new-world setup, verify that the server was stopped while the file was edited and restarted afterward.
- Use a tool in normal gameplay and compare its lifespan with the chosen multiplier. A value of 2 is the clearest sanity check because the documented behavior is double durability.
Do not use one already-damaged tool as the only test of the setting. Its saved current wear is separate from the world multiplier, and the documentation does not establish how a live change treats that existing wear.

Troubleshooting common failures
The server rejects the command
- Check capitalization: the documented name is
toolDurability, with a capitalD. - Make sure you entered a number from 0 through 99 rather than brackets, words, or a decimal value.
- Run it from the dedicated-server console or with an account that has administrator permission in chat.
- Check the console output for a more specific syntax or permission error.
The JSON edit does not work
- Confirm that the key is spelled
toolDurabilityand is nested underWorldConfiguration. - Keep the value in the documented file format, such as
"2". - Check commas and braces, then restore the backup if the server will not start.
- Remember that this file route is intended for settings applied before world creation; use the command for an existing world.
Tools do not appear to change
- Confirm that the command completed successfully rather than merely appearing in chat.
- Test with a new or undamaged tool so its prior saved wear does not confuse the result.
- Check that you changed the intended server and world, particularly if multiple instances use separate data directories.
- If a mod also changes durability, disable conflicting configuration temporarily or verify which system has priority.
Changing the value back
To return an existing world to the documented default, run:
/worldconfig toolDurability 1For a world that has not yet been created, set the JSON value back to "1" under WorldConfiguration. As with any configuration edit, stop the server first, keep a backup, and validate the file before restarting.
