Change trader opening and closing times on the server that actually hosts your world. On servers with the current 3.x sandbox editor, choose a Trader Hours preset there. On versions without that control, stop the server and edit every relevant <trader_info> entry in Data/Config/traders.xml, then restart and test the result. The day-length and daylight settings do not control trader hours.

Choose the method that matches your server version
There are two normal configuration paths. A current 3.x server may expose trader schedules as a sandbox setting. Older configurations and servers that do not show that setting use the active Data/Config/traders.xml file. A server-side mod is a third option when you need behavior not exposed by either interface.

Check for the sandbox control first. If it is absent, use XML. Do not edit a local game installation and expect a dedicated or rented server to use that file.
Before changing anything
- Stop the dedicated server. Editing while the process is running can leave the live world using the old values or cause your changes to be overwritten.
- Back up the current configuration. Copy the server’s configuration folder, or at minimum make a dated copy of
traders.xmland the sandbox settings. Keep the original until you have tested the new schedule. - Identify the active installation. A rented host normally exposes the same server-side path through its file manager or SFTP. The important distinction is that the file must belong to the running server, not to your client computer.
- Use a plain-text editor. XML must remain plain text and keep its
.xmlextension. Avoid word processors that add formatting or change quotation marks.
Use the 3.x sandbox editor when Trader Hours is available
Current 3.x server-settings references place gameplay sliders in the sandbox-code system rather than treating them as ordinary serverconfig.xml properties. Open the server’s sandbox settings and look for Trader Hours. The editor exposes the following choices:

The editor describes Trader Hours as independent of both 24 Hour Cycle and Daylight Length. Set the preset, save the sandbox configuration, restart the server if your host requires a restart to apply settings, and join during a formerly closed period to verify it.
Why the editor’s Default may not match older guides
Older XML-oriented instructions commonly show traders opening at 04:05 and closing at 21:50. The 3.x sandbox editor lists its XML Default as 04:00-22:00. Those are different configuration models and should not be blended: use the values displayed by the settings interface for the version you are running, or inspect the active XML file when that interface is unavailable.

Direct XML editing is the practical route when you need a precise window, a per-trader schedule, or a version that has no Trader Hours sandbox control.

1. Locate the server copy
In the active dedicated-server installation, open Data/Config/traders.xml. On a rented server, use the host’s file manager or SFTP to reach that same path on the server. A client-side copy under your personal game folder does not change the dedicated world.
2. Find every trader_info entry
Search the file for <trader_info. Entries use attributes including open_time, close_time, and reset_interval. A documented example is:
<trader_info id="1" reset_interval="3" open_time="4:05" close_time="21:50">Leave the other attributes intact unless you have a separate reason to change them. The reset_interval value concerns inventory reset timing; it is not the daily opening period.
3. Replace the time attributes
Use 24-hour clock values in the same time format used by the file. For example, to open at 08:00 and close at 23:00, change the attributes to:

<trader_info id="1" reset_interval="3" open_time="8:00" close_time="23:00">Apply the change to every trader entry that should share the schedule. Editing only the first entry can produce apparently inconsistent hours because other traders may still carry their original values. If you want different schedules, edit each entry deliberately and record which ID receives which window.
4. Save without damaging the XML
Keep the filename as traders.xml, preserve the quotation marks and surrounding attributes, and make sure the document remains well formed. Do not add commentary inside a tag or leave an opening tag unfinished. If your editor offers syntax checking, run it before uploading the file.
5. Restart and test
Start the server only after the file is saved. Connect to the world, check the in-game clock, and visit a trader shortly before opening, during the open period, and shortly after closing. Testing both boundaries catches a mistyped hour and a schedule that crosses midnight.

Making traders open all day
Built-in Always Open preset
If the 3.x sandbox editor offers Always Open, select it instead of editing XML. This is the clearest option because the server applies the supported preset directly and no client-side installation is needed.
XML window from midnight to 23:59
On a version without that preset, set each relevant trader entry to open_time="0:00" and close_time="23:59". Keep the format consistent with the existing file and edit all entries that should be permanently available. This is an all-day window rather than a literal 24:00 closing value.
Server-side mod
A compatible mod can patch the trader entries automatically. TradersNeverSleep is documented as changing every trader’s times to 00:00-23:59 and instructs dedicated-server operators to install it on the server. Put a server-only mod in the server’s Mods folder, follow the mod’s version requirements, and check whether another mod also patches traders.xml. Two mods writing the same entries can make the result dependent on load order or overwrite one another after an update.

Keeping blood-moon behavior
The sandbox editor’s BM Closed choice is the supported way to keep traders closed during blood moons while using a preset schedule. An Always Open selection intentionally removes the normal daily closure, so choose the preset that matches your goal rather than assuming a custom all-day XML window will preserve blood-moon closures. For XML-only configurations, the cited schema documents opening, closing, and reset attributes but does not establish a separate blood-moon switch; verify the behavior in your exact game version before relying on it.
Does changing day length change trader hours?
No. The 3.x sandbox reference explicitly treats Trader Hours as independent of 24 Hour Cycle and Daylight Length. Altering the length of a game day changes the passage of the in-game clock, but it is not the control that defines the trader’s opening and closing values. Change Trader Hours or the XML attributes themselves when you want a different schedule.
Dedicated, rented, and locally hosted servers
Dedicated server
Make the change on the machine or service that launches the dedicated world. Stop that process, edit its Data/Config/traders.xml or sandbox setting, then restart it. A client can connect with an unmodified installation because the schedule is supplied by the server.
Rented server
The file location is still the server’s Data/Config/traders.xml. Hosting panels may hide the installation root, so use the panel’s file browser or SFTP credentials to locate the active Data directory. Restart through the host panel after saving; closing only your game client does not reload server configuration.
Local host or test server
When you run the server locally, there can be several copies of the game files. Confirm which executable and installation directory the launch script uses before editing. A successful save in an unused installation produces no in-game change and can be mistaken for a syntax problem.

Troubleshooting when the hours do not change
- No visible change after restart: Confirm that you edited the file used by the running server, not a client copy or an unused installation. Check the server log or launch path if multiple installations exist.
- The server fails to start: Restore the backup and compare the edited line for missing quotation marks, a damaged closing bracket, or accidental rich-text formatting. XML must remain well formed.
- One trader follows the new hours and another does not: Search for every
<trader_infoentry and update the entries you intended to change. A single untouched entry keeps its old schedule. - A mod restores the old hours: Inspect the server’s
Modsfolder for another package that patchestraders.xml. Disable conflicting patches one at a time and restart between tests. - The schedule appears shifted: Check the actual in-game time rather than your computer’s wall clock. Test just before and after both boundaries, especially for the Night preset or any window that crosses midnight.
- Changes disappear after an update: Keep a backup of your edited file and recheck the version’s configuration model. A newer 3.x build may expose Trader Hours in sandbox settings even when an older guide told you to edit XML.
Final verification checklist
