To change the video in an encoder-based YouTube loop stream without ending the broadcast, switch the active source or scene in the encoder that is sending the feed. Keep the encoder connected and transmitting, preview the new source, then verify the live picture and audio. YouTube Studio manages stream details and provides the stream URL and key; it is not a universal midstream video-switcher.
Where to change the video
YouTube receives the live feed from the encoder connected using your stream URL and stream key. The video selection therefore happens in that encoder’s production controls, not in a universal YouTube Studio control. If a third-party playback or playlist service is generating the stream, use that service’s own controls; YouTube’s general encoder guidance does not document them.
Switch the source while keeping the broadcast live
- Identify the encoder currently sending the feed. Confirm which computer, software or hardware encoder is connected to the live broadcast. Do not stop its output if you want to keep the same broadcast running.
- Prepare the replacement video or scene. Select or load it in the encoder using that product’s production controls. Button names and behavior vary by application or device, so consult its current instructions if the controls are unclear.
- Check the encoder preview. Make sure the intended video is visible and that any associated audio is correct before switching it to the live output. YouTube recommends testing the setup and checking the preview before going live. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips
- Switch the active output. Use the encoder’s scene or source controls to take the replacement video live. Avoid stopping or restarting the encoder connection when your goal is an uninterrupted broadcast.

- Keep the encoder sending content. The broadcast continues only while the encoder keeps sending its feed; YouTube’s setup guidance says to stop sending content from the encoder to end the stream. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Live Control Room is where you manage stream details and get the stream URL and key used by the encoder. The cited YouTube instructions do not describe a general Studio control for replacing the encoder’s video source during a live broadcast. Preview, delay and protocol considerations
Use the preview to catch a wrong source, black picture or missing audio before switching; after the change, check the actual live output as well. YouTube’s advice to test a setup, preview it and monitor the stream applies regardless of which encoder you use. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips
YouTube supports RTMP(S) and HLS workflows. HLS delivers video in segments and has higher latency than a continuous RTMP stream, which can affect how quickly viewers see a change. Choosing an encoder for a changing video lineup
Choose an encoder based on the sources and production complexity you need to manage, and whether you can test and monitor the result reliably. A software encoder can be enough for a straightforward setup; hardware may suit a production using external audio or video equipment. YouTube describes encoders as tools for advanced productions and external hardware, but also says expensive equipment is not required to get started. Troubleshooting a source change
- The broadcast ended: The encoder may have stopped sending content. Reconnect or restart the encoder as needed; if YouTube has ended that live broadcast, you may need to start a new one.
- The old video is still live: Check that you changed the active output, not only the preview, and confirm that the encoder you edited is the one connected to YouTube.
- The output is black or shows the wrong content: Recheck the selected source, its visibility or playback state, and the encoder preview before taking it live again.
- There is no sound or the wrong sound: Check the source’s audio routing and monitor the live output after switching, rather than assuming the picture change also selected the correct audio.
- Viewers see the change late: Some delivery delay is normal. HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP; that affects when viewers see the new picture, not where you select it.
