What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To stream at a higher resolution, first make sure your camera, game capture, or desktop source actually provides that detail. Then set your streaming output to the target resolution, choose a bitrate and frame rate your platform and upload connection can sustain, and confirm your encoder can keep up. Raising an output setting alone cannot restore detail missing from the source or override a platform’s ingest limits.
1. Check what resolution your source actually delivers
Before changing encoder settings, check the resolution coming from the camera, capture card, game, or desktop you intend to broadcast. A stream output set to 1440p or 4K can enlarge a lower-resolution input, but scaling does not create detail that was never captured.
For a game stream, confirm the game or console is outputting the intended resolution and that the capture device and capture software accept it. For a camera, check its output mode rather than relying only on the resolution selected in your streaming software. If the source itself is soft or low-resolution, address that first; buying a more powerful encoder will not recover missing source detail.
2. Set the output resolution in OBS
In OBS, open Settings > Video. Base (Canvas) Resolution describes the working canvas—normally your desktop or game resolution. Output (Scaled) Resolution is the size sent to the streaming service. To send a higher-resolution stream, set the output to the intended target, provided the source, encoder, connection, and platform can support it.

- If the output is lower than the canvas, OBS scales the picture down using a downscale filter.
- If you choose an output larger than the source, OBS scales it up; this changes dimensions, not captured detail.
- If you are scaling down, NVIDIA suggests Lanczos with 36 samples for its NVENC workflow. It can add a small encoder workload, so test it on your system. NVIDIA’s streaming guide
Do not select the highest number simply because it is available. Consider source detail, motion, frame rate, connection capacity, platform support, and encoder load together.
3. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together
A higher resolution and frame rate generally need more bitrate to preserve detail, especially in fast-moving gameplay. They also require more encoding capacity. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists the following H.264 and AV1/H.265 recommendations. These are YouTube settings, not universal requirements for every service; verify the destination’s current ingest guidance before going live. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
| Output at 60 fps | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
These are configuration figures published by YouTube, not a promise that every source or connection will look best at the highest setting. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple viewer formats, but the viewer’s available quality choices depend on the platform’s processing and delivery behavior.

How to decide between 1080p, 1440p, and 4K
- 1080p60: a practical target when the source is 1080p or lower, or when upload bandwidth and encoder capacity do not leave reliable headroom for higher settings.
- 1440p60: consider it when the source has useful 1440p detail and you can sustain the corresponding bitrate and encoding workload.
- 4K60: use it when the source genuinely provides 4K detail and your encoder, upload connection, and destination support it. YouTube’s guidance says 2160p does not offer its low-latency option.
These are choices with increasing bandwidth and encoding demands, not a universal quality ladder. A well-encoded 1080p stream can be preferable to a 4K stream with insufficient bitrate, unstable upload, or skipped frames. For fast gameplay, motion can make compression artifacts more visible; if a higher bitrate is not sustainable, lowering the resolution may produce a cleaner delivered picture.
Codec and OBS starting values
YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 encoding options in its live encoder guidance. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Confirm that your encoder and the destination support your chosen codec and settings.
OBS’s x264 guide gives scenario-dependent starting points at 30 fps for x264 using the veryfast preset and low-to-medium motion: 3–5 Mbps at 720p, 5–8 Mbps at 1080p, 8–12 Mbps at 1440p, and 12–20 Mbps at 2160p. They are not substitutes for the destination’s current requirements or YouTube’s 60 fps recommendations above. OBS notes, “There is no such thing as ‘best settings.’” OBS Project: Streaming with x264

4. Make sure your upload connection has headroom
Run an upload speed test as YouTube recommends, preferably under conditions similar to your intended stream. Compare sustained upload capacity—not just the advertised plan speed—with your target bitrate. Other devices, game traffic, voice chat, and background uploads also use bandwidth.
NVIDIA’s January 2025 guide suggests using around 75% of measured upload speed for streaming bitrate as a rule of thumb, leaving capacity for other network use. This is vendor guidance, not a universal platform rule. NVIDIA’s example table maps a 10 Mbps upload to an 8 Mbps bitrate, with illustrative maximums of 1080p for H.264, 1440p for HEVC, and 1440p for AV1. Actual results depend on the encoder, service, and connection stability. NVIDIA’s streaming guide
If your connection cannot sustain the bitrate for a target, reduce the bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again. A higher resolution setting cannot compensate for dropped network data.

5. Check encoder load before choosing higher settings
Higher resolution and frame rate increase the work required to encode a stream. In OBS, watch for the “Encoding overloaded!” warning and for skipped or distorted output. If you see these symptoms, lower the output resolution or frame rate first; if necessary, choose a less demanding encoder preset. OBS explains the relationship between encoder load and stream performance in its x264 guide.
A supported hardware video encoder can help if your computer cannot encode the target without overload, but compatibility and capability vary by graphics card and encoder. A GPU will not fix insufficient upload bandwidth, an unsupported destination setting, or a low-resolution source.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Confirm the platform accepts the target and test it
Platform support differs: do not assume every service accepts the same resolution, codec, bitrate, latency mode, or transcoding setup. YouTube can detect resolution and frame rate automatically, or a broadcaster can create a custom stream key and select a manual stream resolution. Its current encoder guidance covers these options and destination requirements. If the desired resolution is unavailable, verify the platform’s ingest support and whether manual selection is needed.

Twitch has 2K and Enhanced Broadcasting behavior, but its current limits can change; check Twitch’s official guidance before configuring a non-YouTube stream. Transcoding availability also varies by platform. NVIDIA notes that Twitch transcoding is guaranteed to Partners and may be available to other streamers depending on server load. Do not assume all viewers can select a lower quality.
Before a real broadcast, test a representative scene with the same audio and movement you expect to stream, then monitor stream health. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance
7. Troubleshoot common resolution problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| The higher resolution is unavailable | The destination does not accept the chosen mode, or automatic selection is in use. | Check current ingest support and resolution-selection options. On YouTube, a custom stream key allows manual resolution selection. |
| The stream becomes unstable | The bitrate is too high for sustained upload capacity, or competing traffic is using the connection. | Compare the target bitrate with a measured upload speed; reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again. |
| OBS reports “Encoding overloaded!” or frames skip | The encoder cannot keep up with the chosen resolution, frame rate, or preset. | Lower output resolution or FPS, then reduce encoder preset demands if needed. |
| Fast movement looks blocky | Motion is difficult to compress at the available bitrate. | If upload and platform limits allow, increase bitrate; otherwise lower resolution and compare a representative test. |
| Viewers cannot choose a lower quality | The destination’s transcoding options may not be available for this stream or account. | Check the platform’s current transcoding behavior; do not promise viewer quality choices that the destination does not provide. |
| The picture looks soft despite a high output setting | The source may be low-resolution, or the scaling path may be reducing detail. | Inspect the source resolution and OBS canvas/output settings before changing hardware. |
