To allow online multiplayer on Xbox, open the account’s Xbox privacy settings and set You can join multiplayer games to Allow. If the game connects you with players outside Xbox services, also set You can join cross-network play to Allow. These are separate privileges, and changing one does not automatically change the other.
What the two Xbox permissions control
Xbox treats ordinary online multiplayer and cross-network play as different account privileges. The distinction matters when a game reports that multiplayer is blocked even though another online feature works. Microsoft’s definitions are documented in Client-side use of Xbox services user privileges and XR-045: Xbox network and Account Privileges.

Allowing a privilege does not add cross-play to a game that does not support it. It only removes the Xbox account-level restriction for a supported activity.

Before changing the setting
- Identify the affected account. Privacy permissions belong to the Xbox profile that is trying to join the session. Sign in with that profile, or have the family organizer change the child profile’s permission.
- Check whether the game supports the activity. Cross-network permission is relevant only when the title supports sessions with users outside Xbox services. A game can offer Xbox multiplayer without offering cross-network play.
- Separate online and local multiplayer. The multiplayer privilege concerns online sessions with real-world users. A local match on the same console or device is a different activity.
- Expect separate chat controls. If the problem is missing voice, text, or invitations rather than an inability to join a match, inspect communication permissions as well.
Change Xbox privacy settings on an Xbox console
Use the following path on the console. The labels are the Xbox privacy controls identified in Microsoft’s privilege documentation.

- Sign in to the Xbox profile that cannot join the multiplayer session.
- Open Settings.
- Select General.
- Open Online safety & family.
- Select Privacy & online safety.
- Open Xbox privacy.
- Find You can join multiplayer games and change it to Allow.
- If the game requires play with people outside Xbox services, find You can join cross-network play and change it to Allow too.
- Back out of the menus so the change is saved, then return to the game and try the multiplayer action again. If the game was already running, closing and reopening it can make it re-check the account privilege.
The two toggles should be considered independently. A player who only needs Xbox-network multiplayer may need the first setting but not the second; a cross-network session can require both.
Change the setting from a PC or web browser
Microsoft provides the Xbox privacy settings page at aka.ms/XboxPrivSettings. Open that address in a browser and sign in with the Microsoft account connected to the affected Xbox profile.
- Go to aka.ms/XboxPrivSettings.
- Verify that the signed-in account is the profile the game uses. Switching to a different Microsoft account changes the wrong profile and will not fix the affected player.
- Locate You can join multiplayer games and set it to Allow.
- For a title that supports players outside Xbox services, set You can join cross-network play to Allow.
- Save or apply the change if the page presents a save control, then restart the game or sign out and back in so the title requests the updated privilege.
If the page displays family-managed controls instead of editable settings, the signed-in account is not authorized to change that profile. A parent or family organizer must make the change.

Child accounts and family-managed permissions
Child-account permissions can come from age-based defaults or choices made by the family organizer. Microsoft describes these controls in XR-045: Xbox network and Account Privileges. A child may therefore see multiplayer blocked even when the console’s menus are working normally.
- Have the parent or guardian sign in to the account that manages the child’s Xbox profile.
- Open the Xbox privacy settings page at aka.ms/XboxPrivSettings, or use the console path Settings > General > Online safety & family > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy while signed in as the organizer.
- Select the child profile rather than the organizer’s own profile.
- Allow You can join multiplayer games. If the title requires cross-network sessions, allow You can join cross-network play as well.
- Review communication permissions separately if the child can join a match but cannot use chat or receive invitations.
Some title-level approval flows can authorize a specific activity for a specific game without broadly changing every account privilege. Minecraft’s parental-controls guidance directs parents to Xbox account settings when editing a child’s multiplayer permission; its instructions are available at Parental Controls in Minecraft. A title-specific approval does not mean that every other game will receive the same permission.
Why multiplayer can work while cross-network play does not
Cross-network play is not simply a second name for multiplayer. The cross-network permission covers sessions in which some participants are not signed in to Xbox services. If a game keeps all players inside the Xbox service, its ordinary multiplayer check may be sufficient. If it connects to another network or service, the title may check both privileges.

- Xbox-only session: allow You can join multiplayer games.
- Session with players outside Xbox services: allow both You can join multiplayer games and You can join cross-network play, when the title requires both.
- No cross-play support in the title: changing the account permission cannot create a cross-network lobby.
Game-specific availability, platform combinations, matchmaking rules, and account requirements remain under the game’s control. Treat the Xbox setting as an account privilege, not as a guarantee that every platform can connect.

Xbox can permit a player to join multiplayer while limiting who can communicate with that player. Voice chat, text messages, invitations, and related contact permissions are separate from You can join multiplayer games.
This creates two common situations:
- The player cannot enter the match: check the multiplayer permission first, then investigate family, entitlement, platform, and game requirements.
- The player enters the match but cannot hear, speak, message, or receive invitations: inspect communication permissions rather than changing the multiplayer toggle again.
For a child profile, the family organizer may need to adjust both categories. Allowing multiplayer alone does not imply unrestricted communication.

If multiplayer is still unavailable
An allowed privacy toggle is only one input in Xbox privilege checks. Microsoft lists subscription entitlements, device and client-platform entitlements, parental controls, moderator restrictions, and additional title checks as possible factors. Do not assume that a subscription is always required or that changing privacy is a universal fix; the game and service determine their own requirements.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
Use this order to avoid changing unrelated controls:
- Reopen the Xbox privacy page and confirm you are viewing the same Microsoft account and Xbox profile used by the game.
- Confirm You can join multiplayer games is Allow.
- If anyone in the session is outside Xbox services, confirm You can join cross-network play is Allow.
- For a child profile, ask the family organizer to verify the setting and any age-based or title-specific restriction.
- Check communication permissions only if the failure involves chat, messages, or invitations rather than entering the match.
- Read the game’s own online-multiplayer requirements. Confirm its supported platforms, any required service entitlement, and whether the specific mode permits cross-network play.
- Close and relaunch the game after changing permissions. If the title still reports a restriction, compare the account’s other privilege requirements instead of repeatedly toggling the same setting.
Examples of which setting to change
Joining friends who use Xbox services
If the game’s online session stays within Xbox services, the relevant account control is You can join multiplayer games. Communication settings may still determine whether invitations or voice chat work.

Joining friends on another supported network
For a title that supports cross-network sessions, allow You can join multiplayer games and You can join cross-network play. The game must support the platform combination; the account setting cannot make an unsupported combination work.
A parent approving one child’s game
The family organizer can review the child profile’s Xbox privacy controls and, where the title offers it, use a title-level approval flow for that specific activity. An approval for one game should not be treated as a blanket change for every title.
Multiplayer works but chat is silent
Leave the multiplayer permission unchanged and inspect communication controls. The ability to join a session and the ability to communicate are intentionally separate.
Final verification checklist
- You changed the profile that the game actually uses.
- You can join multiplayer games is set to Allow for online multiplayer.
- You can join cross-network play is set to Allow when the session includes users outside Xbox services.
- The game supports the multiplayer or cross-network mode you are trying to use.
- A parent or family organizer has approved the child profile where required.
- Communication permissions match what you want for voice, text, and invitations.
- You have checked the game’s own entitlement, platform, account, and mode requirements if the error remains.
These checks separate an Xbox account privacy block from a game limitation or another privilege requirement, which is the key to fixing the right setting without changing controls that are unrelated to the problem.
